Chris Iannetta smacked a lead-off homer off major league newcomer Evan MacLane in the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies earned an 8-7 win over the Cardinals, picking up their second straight magical comeback win. Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa elected to go with MacLane for the start of the ninth. MacLane (0-1) was called up from Triple-A Memphis earlier in the day when Adam Ottavino went on the 15-day disabled list. Iannetta crushed a 3-2 offering over the wall in left field, giving the Rockies their 10th win in the last 11 meetings against the Cardinals. Matt Holliday went 4-for-5 with a pair of solo homers against his former team, but the Cardinals faltered in the late innings again. John Jay also homered for the Cardinals who will play Colorado today at 2:00 on KSMO Radio.
Alberto Callaspo and Mitch Maier hit home runs in the eighth inning, as the Kansas City Royals rallied past Seattle, 7-3, to complete their first road sweep of the Mariners in 15 years. Callaspo's three-run shot was the big blow for Kansas City, which scored six runs in the final three innings in capturing the three-game sweep. It is the Royals' first road sweep of the Mariners since June 12-14, 1995. Billy Butler also homered and finished with two RBI for the Royals, who have won six of seven. Starter Kyle Davies allowed three runs on four hits and four walks in six innings, and did not take a decision. Victor Marte (3-0), Kyle Farnsworth and Joakim Soria each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to seal the win. The Royals are off today.
The St. Louis Blues have re-signed forward Cam Janssen to a one-year contract extension. The 26-year-old Janssen was scoreless in 43 games last season while recording a career-high 190 penalty minutes. During portions of the last five seasons with New Jersey and the Blues, the St. Louis native has scored two goals and added four assists in 206 games while piling up 544 penalty minutes.
