The City of Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, an open alcohol container, a city warrant, a traffic stop and shoplifting. On Friday, July 3^rd at 9:20 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 500 block of South Jackson in reference to a domestic disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 47-year old Salem man for assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated. At 2:30 that afternoon, an officer was sent to the Wal-Mart parking lot in reference to an intoxicated individual passed out on the parking lot. The report led to the arrest of a 41-year old Bunker man for an open alcohol container. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated. At 10:00 that night, a 26-year old Salem man was contacted in the city reference to a warrant for his arrest from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated on the warrant pending posting bond. On Saturday, July 4^th at 1:40 a.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a passenger of the vehicle, a 24-year-old Salem man for a felony and misdemeanor warrant from Texas County Sheriff Department. He was incarcerated pending extradition or posting bond. At 12:00 that afternoon, an officer and female dispatcher served a mental commitment order on a 37-year old Salem woman. She was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center on a 96-hour evaluation. Then at 12:45 that same afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting incident. The report led to the arrest of a 59-year old Salem man for stealing a bottle of alcohol valued at $29.54. He was issued a summons on the theft to appear in court and released.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular Monday morning meeting yesterday.  First District Commissioner Dennis Purcell gave his road report. Crews are working in the Bunker area with clean up from the May 8^th storm. The clean up will allow crews to get in and do grading on the roads. Crews will also be grading county roads 6630, 6633 and 6660 in the Montauk area.  Crews will also be hauling rock on county roads 6630 and 5190.  A culvert will be installed and ditches will be pulled on county road 5190. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading will be done this week on county roads 5280, 5290, 2090, 2220, 2390, 2315, 2313, 2403, 2405, 6120 and 6123.  Crews will be hauling rock on roads 5280, 2403 and 2405. They will also be patching some chip and seal roads. Bids for repairs on the flooring on the second floor of the Judicial Building will be opened on Thursday morning in the Commissions regular meeting. In other business, persons and businesses interested in the damage assistance offered for damages from the May 8^th storm are reminded that the assistance is only for damages not covered by insurance. Those interested need to either call 1-800-621-3362 or go online to www.disasterassistance.gov to begin the process of applying for assistance. If you file a claim and receive a denial, persons should call the 800number to find out why the claim is denied. It may be a minor error causing the denial. In other business, Wednesday, July 8^th is the deadline to register to vote in the August election. The election is for R-80 district residents only. Voters in Boss that are in the R-80 District will be voting at the Macedonia United Baptist Church, across from the Tudor Hall, in the August election. The next regular meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 A.M. in the Commission office at the Dent County Courthouse.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Friday, June 26^th at 5:56 pm, seven firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 32 west and assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with a patient. The scene was under control at 6:33 pm. At 10:31 that same evening, seven firefighters assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with a patient on Walker Street in Salem. On Saturday, June 27^th 6:05 in the evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to DD Highway to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital with a patient. The scene was under control at 6:29 pm and nine firefighters responded to the call. Then at 9:18 that same night, 13 firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway HH. Upon arrival there was one vehicle turned on it’s side fully involved. The fire was extinguished and the scene was under control at 2:37 pm. On Sunday, June 28^th at 5:15 in the early evening, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to a dumpster fire on Odom Street. Upon arrival five firefighters found a dumpster fully involved. The fire was extinguished and the scene was under control at 5:37 pm. The cause of the fire is unknown. On Tuesday, June 30^th at 3:15 in the afternoon, the Dent County Fire Protection District responded to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 32 east. Upon arrival firefighters found one vehicle overturned in the ditch. A total of seven firefighters assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital and returned to the station at 3:44 pm. 

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Eunice Gilbert of St. James, age 82, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday morning from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Matlock Cemetery.

Funeral services for Velta L. Stroder of Salem, age 75, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.
