The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that work continues in the Sinkin Township.  He said that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 5610 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5618.  Simpson also said that grading would be done east of town on Dent County Roads 4150, 4155, 4210 and 6580.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that all of the District 2 road crew would be in the Stone Hill area working on Dent County Road 5240, where a lake has spilled over its banks due to the substantial amount of rain that has fallen in that area.  The road pipe below the lake has not been able to carry all the water, causing major damage and washouts.  Tune said that the old pipe would be removed and replaced with a much larger pipe and the road would be widened.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that Wednesday is the last day to register to vote for the August 5th Primary Election. At the previous meeting Salem City Alderman Jim McDaniels came by to ask the Commission about the possibility of the county donating money to help fund the 4th of July Fireworks and the Commission said they would take it into consideration at budget time. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The 2008 Fourth of July Parade, entitled “Freedom Begins At Home”, was an incredible success with more than 50 entries. This year’s non-commercial prizewinner is Bob Rich of Montauk with his hand made stagecoach pulled by two beautiful Palominos’. Mr. Rich was joined by his wife, daughter, son-in-law and grand kids in showing off this incredible replica of transportation from years past. The Prizewinner in the commercial category is Salem Residential Care. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those who participated and watched the parade. They would also like to thank the Salem Street Department for helping prepare the streets and the Salem Police Department for assisting in closing the necessary streets and leading the parade.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for the first week in July. On Wednesday, July 2^nd at 11:43 in the evening, the Fire District was paged for an ambulance assist in the 100 block of East Third for a patient complaining of chest pains. A total of three firefighters responded to the call. On Thursday, July 3^rd, at 4:41 in the afternoon, the Fire District was paged out for a structure fire in the 800 block of East Rolla Road. Upon arrival on the scene, discovered was a small shed on fire, which apparently caught on fire from a controlled burn that went out of control. The fire was deemed accidental. A total of eight firefighters responded to the call. At 7:00 that evening, the Fire District held a mandatory monthly training session. A total of 14 personnel responded. At 10:35 that same night, the Fire District was paged for a car wreck with injuries, patients trapped, at the intersection of Highway 72 and J in Salem. They arrived on the scene at 10:46 and assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital in extricating the patients from the vehicles and transporting them. A total of 10 firefighters responded to the call.

The 14^th Dent County All-School Reunion is set for Saturday, July 12^th at the Salem High School Cafeteria. Registration, set-up and visiting will begin at 10:00 am, and the Alumni Reunion Committee Board will provide lunch at noon. The event is free, but a $5 donation is asked to help defray the cost of the lunch and to make the reunion event a success. Proceeds from the event help fund scholarships for Salem High School graduates. The Teacher Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held immediately after lunch. Nominations for the Teacher Hall of Fame include Jewel Grogan and the late, Rose Ellis.

John Buck hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the 10th inning as Kansas City rallied for a 7-4 win over Tampa Bay, in the finale of a four-game set from Tropicana Field. After their slim lead slipped away in the home half of the ninth, a determined Royals club went back on top in the 10th. Facing Dan Wheeler (2-4), Billy Butler reached on Evan Longoria's throwing error, stopping at second. Mark Teahen's groundout moved him to third, then Ross Gload was intentionally walked. Buck, on his 23rd birthday, stepped in and unloaded a three-run homer to left which gave Kansas City a 6-3 edge, and Mike Aviles followed with a solo blast to put KC up by four. Joakim Soria (1-1) allowed a homer to Eric Hinske in the Rays' turn at the plate, but recovered to strike out Ben Zobrist and induce Akinori Iwamura into a game-ending groundout. David DeJesus collected three hits and drove in two runs for the Royals, who won for the second time in their last seven. Aviles finished with three hits, while Gload added an RBI and scored twice. Kansas City play tonight at 7:10 against the Chicago White Sox.

Cardinals were off yesterday but they will play the Philidelphia Phillies at Philidelphia tonight at 5:45. You can hear that game right here on KSMO Radio.
