A 32-year old Winona man awaiting trial for his wife's death escaped from custody while watching a fireworks display. Jason McClurg was with nine other inmates outside the Shannon County jail Friday night when he broke free. McClurg was tracked to a camper trailer where he was hiding in the city of Winona Sunday evening. He surrendered peacefully and no one was hurt. McClurg was charged in May with first-degree murder for the death of his wife, Stephanie McClurg. Police say McClurg killed his wife by mixing a prescription medicine with Kool-Aid. McClurg is scheduled to appear in court August 7
th for a preliminary hearing.
An accident occurred at 8:00 Thursday morning in Miller County that took the life of an Edgar Springs woman. According to the highway patrol report, 58-year old Debra Harris of Edgar Springs was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado south on Route U just north of Route EE when she traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, returned to the roadway, crossed the centerline twice, traveled off the right side of the roadway again, struck a fence, and overturned several times. Harris was ejected from the vehicle and flown to the University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:22 that morning by Dr. Stephen Barnes.
An accident occurred at 5:50 Thursday evening in Dent County on Highway CC about fifteen miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 47-year old Jeffrey Null of Salem was driving a 2007 Honda VTX east when he ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Null suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.
On Saturday July 5th at 4:30 in Maries County, Wayne Feeler of Rolla entered the water of a lake on private property adjacent to Maries County Road 518 in an attempt to retrieve a small boat that had drifted out of reach. Feeler disappeared beneath the surface and could not be immediately located. His body was later found and he was pronounced dead by the Maries County Coroner Leo Kloeppel at 7:15 that evening. His body was taken to the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home in Vienna.
An accident happened Friday evening at 8:30 in Crawford County on Route AA about eight miles south of Steelvillle. According to the highway patrol, 48-year old Monique Ross of Steelville failed to negotiate a curve while driving her 2008 Chevy Malibu. She traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and went off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Ross suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Steelville Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, Travis Koestner, MoDOT Assistant District Engineer would like to speak to the Board on Constitutional Amendment 7. John Hambacker would like to discuss with the Board about transparency in government and citizen involvement. The City requested bids for 4,500 gallons of LL100 aviation fuel whereby the price would include taxes, delivery, inspection and certification cost and those bids were due June 27th at 3:00 pm and they will be presented to the Board. In unfinished business, City Attorney William Camm Seay reported that the Salem R-80 school had not given him any agreement for the use of the shooting range by the FFA and he will give a report on the standing of the agreement. At the Special Meeting of the Board on June 30th, the Board denied the issuance of a business license at 701 East Center Street. Nuisance Officer Brown will report on the progress that has occurred in the five-day period given to comply with ordinances and policies. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on issues concerning the city with current and future projects. Mayor J.J. Tune will then give his report including the public comment at Board of Alderman meetings on non-agenda items. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Resolution #7-2014, a resolution to execute a policy to amend the “Rules of Order” to reflect agenda items returned to the agenda after first being voted down and at the second consecutive meeting for lack of a second to the returned motion, must receive a two thirds votes by the Board of Alderman to be placed on any future agenda. City Attorney Seay will present this resolution for approval. Then is new or miscellaneous business, Glenda Wofford had presented a letter of resignation to the Planning & Zoning Commission since she is moving out of the city limits. After approval of the resignation by the Board, Mayor Tune will appoint someone to replace Ms. Wofford on the board. Also the term of Ms. Madonna Mosley, a resident board member of the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners expires on July 24, 2014. The Housing Authority Board is recommending that Ms. Mosley be re-appointed for a term of four years effective July 25, 2014. Ms. Mosley has stated that she will gladly accept the re-appointment. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a three-run homer and as the Marlins took an 8-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the rubber match of a three-game set. Kolten Wong homered and scored twice while Matt Adams supplied a career-high four hits. Marco Gonzales (0-2) was tagged with the loss in his third career start after giving up just one run on seven hits and five walks across 4 2/3 frames. The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Busch Stadium. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.
The St. Louis Cardinals activated infielder Kolten Wong prior to Sunday’s game and optioned outfielder Shane Robinson to Memphis (AAA) following Saturday’s game.
Corey Kluber tossed 8 1/3 innings of one- run ball and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Danny Duffy (5-8) fanned six, but allowed four runs on 10 hits over six innings for Kansas City. The Royals start a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight.

Funeral services for Joseph Richard "Joe" Simpson of Bland, age 66, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Mary Lou Chipman of Steelville, age 85, will be held at 11:00 Tuesday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Debra Kay Harris of Edgar Springs, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from 9:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Graveside services for Leonard James Sanders of St. Louis, age 59, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Leonard Sanders for funeral expenses. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Guylia Fae Phelps of Salem, age 67, will be held Sunday, July 13th at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mill Creek Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
