The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5520 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 6410.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2030 and 2060 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 2330.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the burn ban that is currently in force in Dent County does address open campfires in a campground.  The ordinance states that fires should only be burned in a permanent stove, fireplace or bar-b-q grill.  Joe Bowles stopped by the meeting to discuss Dent County Road 3010 in Lake Spring with Commissioner Larson.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.  

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Thursday, June 28th at 5:45 in the evening, a total of seven firefighters were responding to Highway 32 east and were cancelled in route. On Friday, June 29th a call came in at 11:50 in the morning on South Odom Street. A total of seven firefighters responded to a multifamily dwelling for a medical assist to provide manpower. On Sunday, July 1st at 6:29 in the morning, five firefighters responded to County Road 4170 to provide manpower for a medical assist. Then at 1:21 that afternoon, five firefighters responded to Highway 19 North to provide a medical assist. At 2:19 that afternoon, a total of six firefighters responded to Highway 19 North for a brash or brush and grass mixture fire. The Jadwin Volunteer Fire Department provided Mutual Aid and all units were back in service at 4:03. A total of seven firefighters responded to Highway 32 East at 3:57 that afternoon for a brush or brush and grass mixture fire. The U.S. Forest Service provided Mutual Aid and all units were back in service at 5:25 pm. On Monday, July 2nd at call came in at 2:09 in the early morning on Highway 72. A total of seven fire fighters responded and were then cancelled en route. 

Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host the annual FREE Alley Spring Independence Day Celebration on Saturday night, July 7th from 6:00 to 9:00. This event commemorates the traditional picnic celebrations that were held at Alley Spring around the turn of the twentieth century when this area was the social gathering place for local families. Bring the whole family and neighbors to listen to The Baker Family, musicians from Birch Tree The Western Grand Squares will perform lively traditional square dancing. Remember to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the entertainment. A picnic just wouldn’t be a picnic without FREE watermelon and lemonade. Ice cream and funnel cakes will be available for purchase on the grounds from local vendors. Alley Spring is located five miles west of Eminence on State Route 106. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the fire station on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board reviewed the financial report, approved bills and signed file copies. There was a calendar review and in the monthly reimbursement report for June, it was reported that there were a total of 36 calls with a total of 427 actual on scene man-hours for the month. The Board then set their next monthly meeting for August 7th at the fire station.

The 7th & 8th grade FOOTBALL CAMP will start Monday, July 9th at 9:00 AM and will continue thru Friday, July 13th. Campers should meet at the Salem High School Weight Room on July 9th for registration and the start of camp. The 9th through 12th grade FOOTBALL CAMP will start on Monday, July 9th at 5:30 PM and will continue thru Friday, July 20th with a Team Camp Scrimmage. The cost of either camp is $25. Lance Lynn tossed six shutout innings and earned his 11th win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Colorado Rockies, 6-2, in the finale of a four-game set. Lynn (11-4) fanned seven, scattered four hits and walked two. Carlos Beltran tallied two hits, including a two-run double as part of a five-run fifth inning for the Cardinals, who have won nine of their last 13 contests. Jason Motte notched his 19th save of the year for St. Louis, who will start a three-game series with the Miami Marlins tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.

St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese has been named to his first All-Star game after winning the National League side of the online Final Vote.

Eric Hosmer went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 9-6, in the finale of a four-game series. Yuniesky Betancourt hit a solo homer for the Royals, who won two games in the series. Alcides Escobar, Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon had an RBI apiece. Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar (6-8) gave up two runs on four hits over five innings before leaving for precautionary reasons with a right medial ankle sprain. The Royals start a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers tonight.

The Kansas City Royals have recalled pitchers Nate Adcock and Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha. In addition, the Royals optioned pitcher Vin Mazzaro to Omaha and designated outfielder Mitch Maier for assignment. The Royals also requested unconditional release waivers on catcher Humberto Quintero, who was designated for assignment on June 27th.

The St. Louis Blues have re-signed forward Scott Nichol and signed defenseman Jeff Woywitka to one-year contracts. The Blues also resigned forward David Perron to a four-year contract.

Funeral services for Margaret D. Stambaugh of St. James, age 88, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Jewel '"Junior" Sweeney of Steelville, age 77, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be Fairview Cemetery in Butts, Missouri.

Funeral services for Clyde Virshel Kessee of Salem, age 67, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Berna Dean Stacy of Salem, age 76, will be held at noon Saturday at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association.

Funeral services for Matilda A. Nowicki of High Ridge and formerly of Rosati, age 92, will be held Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Rosati. Interment will be in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Rosati. A remembrance gathering will be held Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Chapel Hill Mortuary in Cedar Hill. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church or Cemetery in Rosati.

Funeral services for Kayla Ann Martin of Steelville, age 28, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00.
