The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Tuesday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Brown was not in attendance and Alderman Jerry Randell ran the meeting as President of the Board. The board heard from Marla Flentje with the Austin Peters Group, Inc. about the recruitment profile for the City Administrator position. The profile includes a number of sections including a community profile, the city government organization, six issues or project descriptions set by the aldermen, the responsibilities and authority of the City Administrator, the board’s preferences and qualifications for the position, the personal qualifications and compensation. Flentje said that the final salary minimum has not yet been set as she will talk with other communities and also get information from the Missouri Municipal League. She also recommended a timetable to get the process started including having ad copy ready by Friday and having an online brochure of the position by Friday or Monday. She said that she would recommend advertising with the MML and Kansas League of Municipalities, local media, governmentjobs.com and inform the ICMA. She would like to have all applications received by July 29^th, and the board agreed to call a special meeting the week of August 8^th. She then recommended interviews the week of August 22^nd that should take one or two days. After that, the board may extend a contract offer to an individual the week of August 29^th and then negotiate the final contract with that individual. She said if everything goes as planned, the city could have a new City Administrator by the end of September or the first of October. Also at the meeting, the board accepted the bid from Junior Light of Salem to tear down and remove the house and shed from 714 East Roosevelt on property that the city bought to extend the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Public Works Director Bill Huffman received an e-mail from BWR who is the consulting firm handling the MoDOT airport grant, and they recommended the approval of the bid from Strukel Electric, Inc. out of Pittsburgh, Kansas for the airport runway work for $150,428.00. The board approved creating a resolution to have the mayor sign the agreement with Strukel when ready. Public Works Director Bill Huffman reported hat the electrical company would be tree trimming on Haskins Avenue for some time, and that he received numerous compliments from the Commons Board about the work done by the city employees at The Commons in preparation for the fireworks as well as the clean-up. Alderman Phillip Giacomelli echoed those compliments about the fireworks and the work the city employees did. Alderman Kenneth Nash expressed his sentiments about the fine activities held locally from the Street Dance, to the Ice Cream Social, to the Parade and fireworks. He said that the community really pulled together to make these events successful. There was a report of some baby skunks under a home that may have bitten or scratched some children. It should be noted that parents should keep their children away from stray animals as they could be carrying rabies. Alderman Randell said that there were a couple of trucks broken into on the Babb Lane parking area. He said that some of the truck drivers wanted to take their rig home, but there is an ordinance that does not allow to park tractor-trailers on city streets in residential areas and there are no exceptions. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, property damage, theft and a traffic stop. On Sunday, June 26th at 4:46 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 20-year old Salem male had assaulted an 18-year old Salem female. On Monday, June 27th at 6:12 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of West Glendale in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed a seven-year old male juvenile had damaged a mailbox and a window of a residence. The value of the damage is about $225.00. Further investigation led to the detention of the juvenile who was later released to his parent. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. At 8:15 that evening, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Third Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Murray push mower valued at $200.00 from the carport of a residence. On Thursday, June 30th at 1:32 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, a 21-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Matt Holliday homered twice and knocked in four runs as the Cardinals hammered the Reds, 8-1, in the second portion of a three-game series.Jaime Garcia (8-3) allowed one run on two hits and three walks through six innings as St. Louis won for the sixth time in eight games. Ryan Theriot had a two run double for the Red Birds and Lance Berkman smashed his 23rd homer of the year in the first inning, the 350th of his career. The Cards and Reds play again tonight starting at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals activated first baseman Albert Pujols from the 15-day disabled Tuesday, prior to the second edition of a three-game series with division rival Cincinnati. Pujols, who was not in the starting lineup but was available as a pinch-hitter in Tuesday's 8-1 victory, was slated to miss 4-to-6 weeks after suffering a fracture to one of the bones in his left forearm during a June 19 contest against Kansas City. To make room on the roster, the Cards placed left-handed pitcher Brian Tallet on the 15-day DL with a right intercostal strain.

Matt Treanor hit a tie-breaking two-run single in the sixth inning to lift the Royals to 5-3 victory over the White Sox in the second of a three-game series. Felipe Paulino (1-2) allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out a season-high nine batters to earn his first win of the year. Alcides Escobar added two hits, including a two-run triple, as Kansas City was victorious for the second time in three games. Joakim Soria put the tying runs on base in the ninth, but got out of the jam to earn his 14th save. The Royals and Sox play again this afternoon in Chicago.

Football camp will start Monday, July 11^th at Salem High School. Camp for grades 7 – 9 will be held July 11^th through July 15^th from 9:00 am to 11:15 am and will meet in the high school weight room each morning. Camp for Grades 10 – 12 will be held July 11^th through July 22^nd from 5:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Cost for each is $25.
