An accident occurred at 4:15 Friday morning in Iron County on Route Y about 1.5 miles north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet driven by 55-year-old Martin L Barnes of Black, was traveling northbound on Route Y. At the same time, a 1991 Toyota Pickup driven by 48-year-old Jesse J Hedrick of Steelville was traveling southbound on Route Y. As the northbound Chevrolet traveled off the right side of the roadway, the driver lost control and returned to the roadway sliding across the centerline and striking the southbound Toyota head-on. Barnes suffered minor injuries, while Hedrick suffered moderate injuries. Both drivers were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital in Salem. Both Barnes and Hedrick were wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet and Toyota were totaled and were removed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker in Viburnum.  

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a theft, disturbances, active warrant, and forged prescription. On Monday, June 29th at approximately 5:21 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 100 block of North Pershing in reference to a theft.  Investigation of the report revealed person or persons unknown entered a gray 1984 Ford F-250 truck and took an Alpine stereo system valued $490.00. On Tuesday, June 30th at approximately 1:10 p.m. an officer was detailed to the Salem Treatment Center in reference to a disturbance. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29 year-old male of Joplin for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center on a 96-hour commitment order. Later that evening at approximately 4:00 p.m. an officer observed a 46 year-old male of Salem in the 400 block of West Fifth who had an active warrant from The City of Rolla, Missouri. He was taken into custody and incarcerated on the warrant pending extradition from Rolla P.D. On Thursday July 2nd at approximately 2:53 p.m. an officer was detailed to Vandivort Drug Store in reference to a forged prescription. Investigation of the report revealed a 25 year-old male of Salem had fraudulently obtained a controlled substance with a forged doctors prescription. On Friday, July 3rd at approximately 1:28 a.m. an officer was detailed to US Bank parking lot on Fourth and Jackson in reference to a disturbance. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 59 year-old male of Salem for drinking in public.  The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers. Prior to the regular meeting, the Planning and Zoning Commission will meet to consider a conditional use permit for a used car lot at 404 West Fourth Street on property owned by Wayne Woods. At the regular meeting under the hearing of persons, Scott Radford from the Salem Masonic Lodge will talk about putting on a MOCHIP program on May 8th, 2010 in the lower level of the city hall. He has talked with the police department about making this a joint effort. After the consent agenda, the board will hear from Sean Curley, Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission about their meeting before hearing from Alderman Jim McDaniels about the Independence Day activities. McDaniels also wants an update on the asphalting of the roads in the city. Aldermen Brand Nash, Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash will each discuss miscellaneous items before Mayor Gary Brown give his comments on city happenings and comments on the fiscal year 2009-2010 budget. In the Introduction and Reading of Bills, Bill #3171 will discuss the setting of new sewer rates for those people outside the city of Salem who have city sewer; Bill #3172 will establish a sanitation deposit for all new utility accounts and all reconnected utility accounts; and Bill #3173 will establish an ordinance that would allow the mayor to execute an agreement to contract with a collection agency to pursue collection of the City of Salem debts. In new and miscellaneous business, the board will discuss a pay scale for mechanics, discuss two proposed policy changes, and discuss changes in some facility rental policies. After the bills are approved, the board may go into closed session to discuss personnel. The meetings of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen and the Planning and Zoning Commission are both open to the public.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 9:30 on Highway 19 about three miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1986 Mazda B-2000 pickup driven northbound by 17-year old Sebastian McGiffen of Alton, Illinois, rounded a curve, ran off the left side of the road, struck a culvert, went airborne and struck a tree. Suffering minor injuries was a passenger, 22-year William McGiffen of Alton, Illinois. He will seek his own medical treatment. Sebastian McGiffen was wearing a seat restraint while William McGiffen was not. The Mazda sustained extensive damage and was left at the scene.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Chris Carpenter returned to form with seven strong innings, and Colby Rasmus homered for the second day in a row, as the Cardinals took the finale of this three-game set, 10-1, over the Reds. Carpenter (6-3) scattered five hits and a run with one walk and five strikeouts while also picking up an RBI single in the win. The former Cy Young Award winner was tagged for six runs on 11 hits in his last start versus San Francisco -- an outing that saw his earned run average climb more than 60 points. He had allowed three runs or less in each of his 10 previous starts this season. Yadier Molina had two hits and two RBI. The Cards will be off tonight.

Miguel Olivo hit a two-run homer, and Brian Bannister allowed just two runs in six innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox, 6-3, to earn a split of a four-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Olivo blasted his 13th home run of the season, while Bannister (6-6) won for the first time in four starts after allowing just five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. David DeJesus and Willie Bloomquist each had three hits and an RBI for KC, which has won two straight after losing four in a row. Joakim Soria earned his 12th save of the season. The Royals will be at Detroit tonight.

Albert Pujols will make his eighth All-Star appearance and sixth start after garnering 5,397,374 votes, the second-most in history behind Ken Griffey, Jr., who had 6,079,688 votes in 1994. Yadier Molina will start behind the plate while teammate closer Ryan Franklin also got the nod for St. Louis, which plays host to the Midsummer Classic on July 14.  Zach Greinke was the only player named from the Royals for the All-Star game.

Funeral services for Gilbert (Gibby) Wisdom of Salem, age 84, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Salem.

Funeral services for Velta L. Stroder of Salem, age 75, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.
