Three people died in traffic crashes during the 2007 July Fourth holiday’s 30-hour counting period. The counting period began at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2007 and ended at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, 2007. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported 64 injuries in 103 traffic crashes.  They made 50 driving while intoxicated arrests. During last year’s 102-hour counting period, 12 people died and 840 people were injured in 1,669 traffic crashes. Troopers made 165 driving while intoxicated arrests during the 2006 counting period.

The Dent County Fire Protection District has released a report involving a structure fire at 800 E. 10^th Street. A call was received at 9:09 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3^rd, to a home owned by Ken and Ellen Brasler of Salem. Firefighters arrived six minutes later, and at that time the garage was fully involved. The fire was under control by 11:17 a.m., with the help of the Lenox, Montauk and Jadwin Fire Departments, along with the Salem Hospital, Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. There was heavy damage to the structure. Two vehicles were parked in the garage: a 1999 Toyota Rav 4 and a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT. No injuries were reported.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that he and Commissioner Tune met with representatives from APAC to check out the roads to be chip and sealed this year. They found a few minor corrections that needed to be corrected on a few of the roads and those problems will be addressed this week. They said the equipment will be arriving in Salem on Monday and the chip and seal work will begin on Tuesday on the Dent County Road 651, also known as the Cedar Grove Road. Simpson said that about three miles of road will be chip and sealed and it should take APAC about a day and a half to complete that road. Commissioner Tune said that grading would be done in the Howes Mill area and brush was being cut in the Boss area. Tune said that work crews will re-address the roads to be chip and sealed on Monday and Tuesday, and also do any patching on roads that will be getting a single coat. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles said that he visited with Congresswoman Emerson at the Rotary meeting on Monday about increasing the PILT money. He also prepared a memo to be sent to the county officials to see if they would like to participate in a Community Outreach Night at the end of July at the City Hall Auditorium. The memo will be sent out by Dent County Clerk Angie Curley to the county officials after it is approved by the commissioners. Skiles said that SEMA’s Jim Paisley will be in town on Tuesday next week to meet with planning committee members and present a slide show of what went wrong in Washington County last year. Skiles reminded the commissioners that bids would be opened on Monday for a firm to do the rural addressing at 10:00, and that the Board of Equalization will be meeting at 11:00. Skiles also said that the Board of Equalization would meet on Thursday morning at 9:30. According to county clerk Angie Curley, 12 people have requested to be heard. At the last meeting, Bob and Elva Schafer asked the county to take over Dent County Road 4185. The Commissioners agreed to accept the road once the road base was increased by the Schafers. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the winners of the July 4^th parade. Commercial winner was Casey’s Convenience Store and Non–Commercial winner was the Pfeifer Family. There were about 70 entries in the parade. The Chamber wishes to thank everyone who participated, everyone who came out to watch, and all of those who helped organize the event.

Funeral services for Buna Mahan of Salem, age 85, will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery in Maples, Missouri.

Funeral services for Paul Ray Howard of Bunker, age 22, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Bunker high School Gym. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday at the McSpadden Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Judith Wood of Vichy, age 57, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James, with visitation Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Catholic Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Bonnie Jean Welker of Potosi, age 71, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery in Davisville.

Funeral services for James E. Malear of Salem, age 75, will be held Wednesday at 5:00 at the Bethany Freewill Baptist Church in Chucky. Tennessee. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Bethany Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Chucky, Tennessee.

Funeral services for David Flegel of St. James, age 48, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Irma Jean Ilges of St. James, age 51, will be held Saturday, July 21^st at 2:00 at the St. James Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be at a later date.
