State Representative Jason Smith has been selected by The American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) as a delegate to Algeria for a 7-day political exchange program beginning on July 9, 2010. He will join six other young political and policy leaders from across the United States to study Algeria’s political system, engage in dialogue on international issues, and forge professional relationships and friendships. Representative Jason Smith will join other delegates, each between the age of 25 and 40, in Washington, DC for briefings by the United States Department of State and other Algerian regional experts before flying to Algiers. The program will provide the delegates opportunities to travel within the country and to interact with key national and local leaders, business representatives, and civic and community groups.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing and meeting on Tuesday, July 6^th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:15 pm. The hearing will be held for the annexation of 1603 and 1605 South Franklin and 600 Phillips Avenue owned by AD-PAR Construction, Inc. The meeting will follow at 6:30 and after the Oath of Office, there will be the election of officers followed by the results of the hearing concerning the annexation of 1603 & 1605 South Franklin and 600 Phillips Avenue. The hearing and meeting of the City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission is open to the public.

Roadwork continues this week in the KSMO listening area. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will be chip sealing routes in Dent, Reynolds, and Shannon Counties. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway at these areas between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. In Reynolds County, chip sealing will be done on Highway 21 from Route HH to two miles north of Highway 72; and chip sealing will be done on Highway 19 from Route EE in Shannon County to Route K in Dent County. MoDOT performs chip-seal resurfacing on roads that are in generally fair to better condition. The benefits include crack sealing, increased skid resistance and correction of minor rutting, which extends the life of the pavement in a cost effective way. When motorists travel a newly chip-sealed road marked by "Fresh Oil" and "Loose Gravel" signs, they should keep their speed down and allow plenty of distance between vehicles to prevent small rocks from coming loose and hitting oncoming traffic. The United States Attorney’s Office announced that 40-year old Larry T. Nason of Rolla, was indicted on federal firearms charges. Nason was indicted by a federal grand jury on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Due to his previous criminal history, he is forbidden by law to own or possess a firearm. He appeared Monday, June 28^th in federal court in St. Louis. If convicted, this charge carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. The South Central Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Jeannette Graviss is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

An ice cream social will be held tonight at Salem City Park to help celebrate Salem’s 150^th birthday. The evening event kicks off with free swimming at the City Pool from 6:00- 9:00 p.m. Ice cream cones will be served beginning at 7:00 p.m. with the cost per cone of $1.00. The gospel bluegrass band New Highway will perform at the park from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., followed by music from Iron Mountain Bluegrass from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy visiting with friends and neighbors. Adam Wainwright notched his fourth complete game of the season and added a bases-clearing double as St. Louis pounded Milwaukee, 7-1, in the finale of a four-game set from Busch Stadium. Jon Jay homered and knocked in two runs for the Cardinals, who earned a split in the series. Wainwright (12-5) scattered five hits and a run while fanning nine and walking none to win for the fourth time in five starts. Wainwright turned in his seventh career complete game. The Cards head to Denver on Tuesday to face the Colorado Rockies starting at 7:20 on KSMO.

Torii Hunter celebrated being named to his fourth All-Star Game on Sunday by going 3-for-4 with two homers and a career- high tying seven RBI in an 11-0 drubbing of the Royals in the finale of a three-game series. Joel Pineiro (9-6) won for the sixth straight time after scattering six hits and four walks while fanning three in seven scoreless innings. Anthony Lerew (1-2) surrendered six runs on as many hits and two walks over five-plus innings for Kansas City, which had won five of six coming in. KC stranded 11 runners in the game. The Royals start a three game series in Seattle tonight.

A year after painting their own town red, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina are taking their act west. For the second consecutive season, the Cardinals' first baseman and catcher will start for the National League in the All-Star Game, this year in Anaheim on July 13^th. They head a group of five St. Louis players on the NL roster. Joining the two starters, who were voted in by fans, are pitchers Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter and outfielder Matt Holliday. Closer Joakim Soria of the Kansas City Royals was named to his second All-Star game.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Funeral services for Gary Lee Norris of Valley Park, Missouri, formerly of St. James, age 52, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday. Interment will be held in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Betty Gott of Salem, formerly of Ava, age 78, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday at the Church from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Salem of the SBU Salem Campus. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Alvina Penning of Cuba, age 84, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 2:00 with a V.F.W. Service at 1:30. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Gail E. Biggs of Cuba, formerly of Sligo, age 83, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

Graveside services for Frieda Emily Hamilton of Rolla, age 92, will be held Saturday July the 10^th at 11:00 A.M. at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Shannon County, Missouri. Memorials may be made to Timber Volunteer Fire Department. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

A memorial service for Loeta Arlene Crews of Boss, age 74, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Betty Jean Gamblin of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Salem, are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
