Konnink Ahold announced Tuesday that it has successfully completed the sale of U.S. Foodservice to a consortium of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Fund VII, L.P. and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co L.P.  This follows the agreement announced on May 2, 2007 on a purchase price of $7.1 billion. Closing of the transaction was subject to the fulfillment of customary conditions, including anti-trust clearance and approval by Ahold's shareholders which was obtained at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on June 19, 2007.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department received two separate reports of an attempted burglary at the Gano Store located off of Highway 19 north. One was reported on June 25th at 8:30 in the morning and the other was on June 27th at 10:15 in the evening. It was reported that two subjects were attempting to break into the store and fled on foot when confronted. Two Sheriff Deputies responded and were assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A search of the area was conducted and upon returning to the store to speak with the witnesses, one of the witnesses produced a male who was identified as a suspect. Another citizen had chased a person on foot from the scene and located the suspect in the woods. The suspect returned with him to the store. Further investigation led to a black bag being taken into evidence containing a pry bar, bolt cutter, adjustable pliers, a screw drive and a set of metal knuckles. A male juvenile was taken into custody and later released to his father. The investigation is continuing. On June 27th at 4:30 in the afternoon, the department received a 911 call reporting a domestic in progress at a residence located off of Dent County Road 418. The incident was reported to have occurred from a threat of physical violence toward a family member and this led to a physical altercation. As a result a 43-year old male was taken into custody pending charges of domestic assault. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

A crowd estimated at about 5,000 people watched the fireworks last night at The Commons sponsored by the City of Salem. Viewers were watching from locations at the Salem High School, Faith Mission and near the Country Club as well as the ground at The Commons. The fireworks display followed the annual 4th of July Parade from McArthur to the courthouse square that includes about 70 entries.

Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded five traffic fatalities during the month of May, 2007. This is three more than May, 2006. The total amount of fatalities for 2007 is 29, compared to 21 last year. During the month of May, Dent County reported 38 accidents, with 13 injuries and two fatalities; Crawford County reported 18 accidents with 12 injuries, and no fatalities; Phelps County reported 70 accidents with 34 injuries, and one fatality, and Pulaski County had 36 accidents, with 15 injuries and one fatality. The other fatality occurred in Laclede County. There were a total of 218 accidents with 102 injuries and five fatalities for May of 2007, compared to the 236 accidents with 130 injuries and two fatalities for May of last year.

Juan Encarnacion and Scott Rolen hit back- to-back RBI doubles in the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-4, in the third of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Chris Duncan and Brendan Ryan homered for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four. St. Louis starter Brad Thompson allowed four runs on seven hits over seven frames. Ryan Franklin (3-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless eighth. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks wrap up their series tonight starting at 5:55 with the Dugout Show on KSMO Radio.

Jarrod Washburn threw shutout ball into the ninth inning and the Mariners gave John McLaren his first win as Seattle's manager in a 4-0 victory over Kansas City to avoid a three-game sweep. Adrian Beltre doubled in two runs and Jose Guillen stroked a two-run single, all during Seattle's four-run first inning. Esteban German had two of the five hits for the Royals, who lost for the third time in 10 games. Brian Bannister (5-5) was saddled with the loss after surrendering seven hits and four runs over seven innings. Three of his five losses this year have come to Seattle. The shutout comes less than 24 hours after the Royals exploded for 17 runs on Tuesday. The Royals have the day off.

The Salem 10th, 11th and 12th grade football camp will be from 6:00 to 8:30 in the evening at the high school gym starting July 9th. The 7th, 8th and 9th grade football camp will also begin July 9th and will last from 9:00 to 11:00. The cost for each camp is $25 and for more information, call Coach Bill Schuchardt at 729-6644.

Funeral services for Anna Mae Richards of Potosi formerly of Steelville, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

A memorial service for Eva Darlene Carr of Salem, age 68, will be held tonight at 6:30 at the New Hope Community Outreach in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Byron Ulysses Gouldsmith of Salem, age 74, will be held Friday at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service for Rita Fay (Stagner) Lindsey of Salem, age 54, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Her body was donated to the National Body Donor Program.

Philip Edwin “Phil” Askey of Salem, age 103, passed away July 1st at the Salem Memorial District Hospital and donated his body to Washington University in St. Louis. A memorial service will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
