From everyone here at KSMO Radio and Your World Today, we’d like to wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July. There will not be a new edition of Your World Today tomorrow due to the holiday. But don’t forget about the parade in downtown Salem on Friday. It’s entitled ‘United We Stand – Proudly We Serve’ and will begin at 6:00 in the evening. The parade will run from the old Fairgrounds (corner of South Grand and Franklin) to the Dent County Courthouse. Following that, the City of Salem will have their fireworks display at the Dent County Commons, with the fireworks to begin at dark.

The Fall Festival Pageants will be held during the Fall Festival July 31st through August 2nd on the main stage at the Dent County Commons. The Children’s Pageant will be held Saturday, August 2nd at 10:00 am and the Girls Pageant will be held Thursday, July 31st at 6:00 pm. Signups for the pageants deadline is Sunday, July 6th. A signup will be held on Sunday, July 6th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Commons building. Pageants will be held for boys from age 0 to 9 years of age and girls from 0 through married. There are 26 titles to be won including a crown, trophy and sash. There will be a MANDATORY Orientation meeting for all contestants and rehearsal practices are required to participate. The Pageants are open to those in Dent, Crawford, Iron, Reynolds, Shannon, Texas and Phelps counties. An accident occurred at 1:27 Wednesday afternoon in Shannon County on Highway 19 about half a mile north of Highway E. According to the highway patrol report, 21-year old Christopher Curtis of Salem was riding a motorcycle north when he lost control, traveled off the roadway, and struck a ditch, causing the motorcycle to catch on fire. Curtis suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The motorcycle was totaled and removed from the scene by Tyler’s Towing.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday night at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board reviewed the financial report and reviewed and approved bills. The financial report showed that as of June 30th, 35.7% of the budget has been spent with 94.3% of the budget being received. For the same time period last year 47.2% of the budget had been spent with 91.1% having been received. The calendar review showed the propane bids are due and July 27th the audit team will be at the district. In the monthly reimbursement report presented to the Board showed a total of 28 calls were logged for the month of May including: one structure fire, three brush fires, four car fires, one landing zone, eight first responder calls, four motor vehicle calls, two mutual aid calls, two haz-mat calls, one call for a meeting, one call for training and one other call. As of the end of May, total calls were 194. Last year for the same time period there were 158 calls for May and total year to date of 316. In old business the reimbursement policy was presented and discussed and will be reviewed by the Board for the next meeting. The building use policy was tabled pending further information and discussion. In new business the Board discussed floor renewal and carpet cleaning including maintenance and future upkeep. The Board then set their next meeting for August 5th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released more of their reports. On Wednesday, June 25th, the Sheriff's Office received a report of a dog bite. Deputies made contact with the victim, who sustained only a bruise and a few small scratches. Deputies contacted the owner of the animal, who agreed to quarantine the animal for ten days. That evening at 5:37, deputies responded to a report of an attempted burglary in the 3000 block of Highway 19. Deputies discovered a broken window, which a probable intruder had broken to gain access to the residence. Due to the residence's security system, an alarm sounded and nobody actually entered the home. The property owner valued the damage to the window at $20. At 8:59 in the evening, deputies responded to a burglary on County Road 3233. The owner reported her home had been burglarized and provided a list of stolen items. On Sunday, June 29th at 12:30 in the afternoon, deputies, along with Missouri State Highway Patrol, responded to the 5000 block of Highway 19 North in regards to a theft at Hayes Auto Sales. Upon arrival, units were advised that a grey Dodge Durango was seen taking 4 wheels and tires from the front of the business. The suspect was identified as a white male, approximately 30 years of age, and was observed putting the wheels and tires in the back of the vehicle. A report was taken and all units departed and searched for the Durango. At 2:30 that afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office received information that a Durango matching the description of the suspects was parked in the 800 block of North Jackson. Once the information was received, deputies along with Missouri State Highway Patrol responded and located the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that a white male, identified as 26-year old Jeremy Strelak of Salem, admitted to stealing 4 wheels and 4 tires from Hayes Auto Sales. Strelak was arrested and received a summons for misdemeanor stealing and was later released. All items that were taken were returned to the owner without incident. Adam Wainwright pitched scoreless ball into the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals downed the San Francisco Giants, 2-0, in the middle test of a three-game series. Wainwright (11-4) collected his NL-leading 11th victory by scattering four hits and two walks over 7 2/3 terrific frames, effectively lowering his ERA to a minuscule 1.89. St. Louis' offense gave Wainwright some early support as Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday both singled in a run in the third inning. The Cardinals and Giants play again today and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 2:10.

Jason Vargas pitched seven scoreless innings, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins in the rubber match of this three-game set from Target Field. Vargas (8-3) struck out five, allowing just four hits with two walks for the Royals. Raul Ibanez went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Mike Moustakas, Jarrod Dyson and Eric Hosmer drove in the other runs for Kansas City, winners in 12 of its last 16 away from home. The Royals are off today before traveling to Cleveland for three games starting on Friday.

Funeral services for Lillie J. Whitaker formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held at 1:00 today at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s.

Funeral services for Joseph Richard "Joe" Simpson of Bland, age 66, will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00.

Funeral services for Mary Lou Chipman of Steelville, age 85, will be held at 11:00 Tuesday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Debra Kay Harris of Edgar Springs, age 58, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from 9:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
