US Representative Jason Smith reports the White River National Blueway Designation for the White River watershed that includes the Current River has been rescinded by the Department of Interior. Smith said "The National Blueways System is gone from Missouri and I will fight to ensure it does not return. This is an incredible victory for those who were rightly concerned the designationwould lead to new regulations and land grabs in the future."
Don't forget the Salem Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Parade starting at 6:00 tonight from the old fairgrounds and ending up at the Dent Coounty Courthouse. Retitred Lt. General William G. "Jerry Boykin will be the Grand Marshall for the parade this year with the theme "It's Still a Grand Old Flag."
Retired Lt. General Jerry Boykin will be the guest speaker tonight at 7:30 at The Commons at the Main Stage as part of an Independence Day celebration featuring local Boy and Cub Scouts, a proclamation from the city, a proclamation from State Representative Jeff Pogue and also from US Representative Jason Smith. There will also be a presentation to Mr. Charles C. Jensen, a Salem native and Pearl Harbor survivor as part of the ceremony.
The City of Salem Fireworks tonight will begin at dark which should be between 9:00 and 9:30 at The Commons.
The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of June. During the month, they wrote three equipment repair orders, 30 summons to appear in court, 18 warning tickets, and 18 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated nine accidents, four assaults, two burglaries, one report of counterfeiting, 12 reports of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, two reports of domestic violence, one report of failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer, one report of harassment, one report of indecent exposure, one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate and one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated one report of a peace disturbance, five reports of property damage, one report of rape, 23 reports of stealing, four reports of trespassing and two 96-hour commitments. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of marijuana and two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The police department received 1,913 calls for service during the month, handled 127 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 98 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 22 hours in court testifying, and spent four hours as court bailiff. The calls in June included 31 calls for escorts, six calls for an intoxicated driver, one call for a prowler, four calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, seven intoxicated pedestrian calls, 29 calls for domestic disputes, and three calls for a wrecker, There were 13 911 calls, six calls for peace disturbances, 16 calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, 13 ambulance assist calls, one fire call and one property damage call. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,897 miles and arrested 27 males and 8 females all during the month of June.
The 2013 July Fourth holiday is fast approaching. All across Missouri, people will gather to have some fun, share a meal, or simply enjoy fireworks. Whether your plans will take place on land or on the water, Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, reminds Missouri’s travelers of the importance of safety during the upcoming July Fourth holiday. In 2012, four people were killed and 194 injured in Missouri over the holiday in 385 traffic crashes. One person was killed or injured every 9.1 minutes. Of that total, troopers worked 104 crashes, including three of the fatalities and 56 injuries during the 2012 July Fourth holiday. Troopers arrested 59 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend. Last year's counting period was 30 hours in length. The 2013 counting period for the July Fourth holiday will be from 6:00 tonight to 11:59 pm, Sunday, July 7th. This year's counting period will span 102 hours. The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the July Fourth holiday weekend. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and alcohol laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists. Troopers throughout the state will participate in a 20-Mile Trooper operation tonight and Sunday, July 7th. This operation will include Interstates 35, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 63. Troopers will be targeting all traffic violations, and be especially vigilant of aggressive driving violations. Motorists who need assistance or who witness criminal activity while traveling on Missouri’s roadways can contact the nearest Highway Patrol troop headquarters by calling the Patrol Emergency Report Line at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. Motorists may call 1-888-275-6636 to check for road construction or possible flooding along their travel route. The Highway Patrol also reminds the public that the Fourth of July holiday is one of the busiest boating holidays of the year. Additional officers will be working on the state’s waters to ensure safety. The Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint and are wearing life preservers.
An accident occurred at 3:33 Sunday afternoon in Texas County on Schafer Road about six miles north of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle driven by 49 year-old Robert L. Lauer of Licking traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a utility pole, ejecting him. Lauer, who was wearing a safety device, sustained moderate injuries and was transported by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
An accident occurred at 4:50 Tuesday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 8 three miles east of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, 22 year-old Matthew G. Ragan of Rolla was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 and attempted to make a left turn into a private drive when a 2007 Freightliner Box Truck, driven by 54 year-old Lawrence P. Hartleb of Bonne Terre, was passing a line of traffic behind the Pontiac and struck it in the left side. A passenger in the Pontiac, 28 year-old Jordan M. Ragan of Rolla, suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. Matthew Ragan and Lawrence P. Hartleb suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Everyone involved was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and the Freightliner sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene of the accident by Miles Towing.

Albert Pujols failed to get a hit in his first appearance against his former team, but the L.A. Angels rode seven strong innings from Jered Weaver to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1, to open a three-game series. Lance Lynn (10-3) was charged with nine hits and five runs and fanned six over six innings, and was dealt a second straight defeat. The Cardinals and Angels play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 8:30.
Asdrubal Cabrera and Carlos Santana each drove in a pair of runs as the Cleveland Indians took a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set. Alex Gordon hit a grand slam while Billy Butler also drove in a run for the Royals. Luis Mendoza lasted just four innings in the start for Kansas City as he gave up four runs on six hits with four walks. Tim Collins (2-3) was tagged with the loss. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.

Funeral services for Thelma Pearl Brand of Steelville, age 84, will be today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery in Steelville.
Funeral services for Jerry E. Williamson of Rolla, age 83, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Vienna Public Cemetery in Vienna. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Avenue Baptist Church in Rolla.
Funeral service for Grover Cleveland Barton, Sr. of Steelville, age 63, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Benton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Mitchell Cemetery in Park Hills.
Funeral service for Fred D. Howard, Sr. of Salem, age 91, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Salem Long Term Care or the Carty Cemetery.
