There will be no new Your World Today for July 4th!

The annual "Sunday at Montauk" event will be held on July 6t at Montauk State Park near Salem. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and is free and open to the public. Crafters will display their wares and demonstrate a variety of talents and skills in an outdoor shaded area adjacent to the open picnic shelter. Visitors are urged to bring their lawn chairs, sit under the large old walnut trees and enjoy an assortment of live musical entertainment on stage. Entertainment will include folk, bluegrass, fiddle, old-time string, country, western, hoe-down, square dance, clogging and line dance tunes. A large ground-level wooden platform will be available for dancers. Tours of Montauk Mill, a gristmill built in 1896, will also be available. Montauk Mill is the only remaining structure from the once-thriving Montauk community. Designed by famous millwright, William Jackson Furry, it was constructed with native short leaf pine and oak hardwoods harvested from the surrounding hills and countryside. Today, the mill contains most of its original machinery. The mill is located just across the road from the event area. Ample parking will be available in the large parking lot adjacent to Montauk Mill and in an open field nearby. Food and refreshments provided by the park's Dorman L. Steelman Lodge will be sold at the open picnic shelter. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles south of Salem on Highway 119, or 13 miles east of Licking, or 25 miles north of Houston off of State Route VV. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind Missouri’s travelers of the importance of safety during the upcoming July Fourth holiday.. Check the traveler information map at www.modot.mo.gov for areas where road construction or the recent flooding could affect your route. Last year, two persons were killed and 230 injured in Missouri over the holiday in 426 traffic crashes. Troopers arrested 50 people for driving while intoxicated during the 30-hour counting period in 2007. Over the past five years, 56 people have been killed and 2,983 have been injured in traffic crashes on Missouri’s roadways over July Fourth holidays. The 2008 counting period for the July Fourth holiday will be from 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 3^rd and run until 11:59 p.m., Sunday, July 6^th.  The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the holiday. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and alcohol laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists. Motorists who need assistance or who witness criminal activity while traveling on Missouri’s roadways can contact the nearest Highway Patrol troop headquarters by calling the Patrol Emergency Report Line at 1-(800)-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

The Annual 4^th of July celebration, sponsored by the City of Salem, will be held tomorrow at the Commons located one mile north of Salem on Highway 72. From 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, crafters, yard sale and flea market vendors will be displaying their wares; and food vendors will also be on hand with shaved ice, tators, BBQ, kettle corn, ice cream, desserts, smoked meats, grilled corn and a whole lot more, and there will be a Car Show from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. At 5:00 the July 4^th parade entitled, “Freedom Begins At Home” will begin at the old fairgrounds then proceed down McArthur to Fourth Street and end at the Court House. Iron Mountain Bluegrass will be performing from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and at 9:30 pm, fireworks will light up the night at the Commons. 

The Phelps County Public Housing Agency, the Section 8 rental assistance center within Meramec Regional Planning Commission, (MRPC), will be closed Friday, July 4^th for Independence Day and Monday, July 7^th for staff training. The Housing Department will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8^th, and applications will be accepted as usual.

Troy Glaus drilled two home runs, including the game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-7 win over the New York Mets in the third meeting of a four-game set. Glaus finished with four RBI, while Rick Ankiel homered and drove in a pair in the Cardinals' fourth win in their last five games. Chris Duncan drilled a pinch-hit, two-run long ball to tie the game in the eighth for the victors. Glaus' blast made a winner of Ryan Franklin (3-2), who tossed a perfect ninth. Starter Joel Pineiro was bounced around for 11 hits and four runs in five innings of work for St. Louis. In the series finale tonight, New York's Mike Pelfrey (5-6) matches up against the Cardinals' Mitchell Boggs (3-0). You can hear the game at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Aubrey Huff's two-run homer in the first paced the Orioles early, leading them to a 5-2 victory over the Royals to take the third game in their four game set in Baltimore. Gil Meche (6-9) recorded his first loss since June 5 and snapped a streak of three consecutive starts with a win, pitching six innings and allowing five runs - four earned - on nine hits while walking two. David DeJesus was the only Royal to record multiple hits - extending his hitting streak to 14 games - batting 3-for-4 with a home run. Joey Gathright added a hit and scored a run in a losing cause. The Royals have lost four of five following a stretch where they won 11 of 12. The two teams will close out the series today, matching up Baltimore's Garrett Olsen and the Royals' Kyle Davies.
