An accident occurred at 11:20 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 just south of the Dent/Phelps County line. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Mercury Milan driven by 22-year old Paul Howard of Bunker was traveling eastbound on highway 72, when a 2001 Dodge Dakota driven by 24-year old Nicholas Mazzuki of Salem traveling westbound, hydroplaned on the wet pavement. The Dakota crossed the centerline and struck the Mercury head-on. Howard suffered serious injuries, and a passenger, 22-year old Daniel Lester of Bunker, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by Salem Ambulance. Mazzuki suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Both Howard and Lester were not wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Dodge Dakota was totaled and towed by Knight Towing. The Mercury was also totaled and towed by Dishman’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 8:50 Saturday night in Dent County on Highway 32 at Highway 119. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 32-year old Shamarie Gammel of Salem, was heading northbound on Highway 119 and failed to stop at a stop sign. Gammel then traveled through the junction of Highway 32, left the roadway, and struck a house. Shamarie Gammel suffered serious injuries, and a passenger, two-year old Emily Gammel suffered moderate injuries. They were both transported to Salem Hospital by the Salem EMS. The Gammels were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Cavalier was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 PM at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. During the hearing of persons, Patsy Hanson is requesting $800 for weed-eating the city’s property over the last several years. The property is located between the sidewalk and curb at the corner of Rolla Road and North Jackson. City Attorney Mark Weaver will then report on the Public Hearing held prior to the Board of Alderman meeting regarding the annexation of #6 Great Oaks Drive. During the reports of city officials, boards and committees, Alderman Jim McDaniels, Bill Riley, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city along with comments by Mayor Gary Brown. City Attorney Mark Weaver will then present a trailer court license renewal for the Boards approval during new business. At the last Board meeting, the Certificate of Analysis Report for Heartland Metal was presented and there were some questions concerning the high zinc levels, but Superintendent Jack Emory was not present to answer questions. City Clerk Mary Happel will bring to the Board’s attention the City’s Code Book Section #17-102, concerning licensing of multiple dwellings and rooming houses, and Happel will also present bills for the Board’s approval during new and miscellaneous business. The Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On June 26^th at 7:30 PM, a wallet was turned in to the Sheriff’s Department. The wallet was reported found at the Flying W in Shannon County. It was reported that the money, credit cards and other items had been removed from the wallet. The National Park Service law enforcement division was contacted and the wallet was released to them. Several suspects are involved and the incident is under investigation by the National Park Service. On June 27^th at 1:08 PM and June 28^th at 7:45 AM, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received two separate reports involving a homemade explosive devise made from sparklers being placed in mailboxes. The separate locations were reported from residents located on Dent County Roads 415 and 301. Both mailboxes received damage from the incidents. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock is reminding citizens in Dent County that your 2004 real estate taxes MUST be paid by today to avoid additional advertising costs of $25 per parcel in the Salem Newspaper beginning July 19^th. If you have questions, call 729-3911.

Funeral services for Sephronia Georgia Boxx of Sandoval, Illinois, formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boxx family.

Funeral services for Stanley Crocker of Salem, age 58, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Salem Church of Christ. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 9:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Crocker Stricklin Cemetery in Bixby.

A memorial service for Rita Fay (Stagner) Lindsey of Salem, age 54, will be held Saturday at 4:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Her body was donated to the National Body Donor Program.

Philip Edwin “Phil” Askey of Salem, age 103, passed away July 1^st at the Salem Memorial District Hospital and donated his body to Washington University in St. Louis. A memorial service will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
