The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a Special Meeting called by Mayor Gary Brown today at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 2:00 to consider a liquor license approval and the payment of bills. The Board will then address Bill #3200 an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement on behalf of the City of Salem to engage in a contract with Kiowa Line Builders, Inc. to reconduct 5,433 feet of 3-phase line and change out one 50-foot pole, also Bill #3201 an ordinance adopting an annual budget for the City of Salem beginning July 1, 2010 and appropriating funds pursuant thereto and Bill #3202 an ordinance establishing new rates for electric services provided by the City of Salem. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a burglary that was reported on June 25 at the Sandra Warren residence on Highway 19 South. The burglary occurred sometime between June 24^th and 25th. According to Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings, entry to the home was made by a person or persons unknown who broke a padlock off the front door. Items that were reported stolen were three antique oil lamps, eight old knives, two oxygen tanks, five PS2 games, a number of DVDs and some prescription medication. Stallings also stated that officers assisted the Shannon County Sheriff's Department on June 26^th with a suspect at the Salem Memorial District hospital concerning an incident that occurred at the Jason Place Campground. He said officers interviewed Jordan Anthony Fostich, who was at the hospital and faxed the information to the Shannon County Sheriff's Department.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors on Thursday, June 24^th, approved nursing scholarships for Gina Harwell in Dialysis and EMT Tasha Arnett. After discussing evaluations for the hospital employees, the board approved raises for the 2011 fiscal year that totaled about $217,000. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that 197 employees were evaluated and that any employee hired after February 1^st was not evaluated as they were still on probation at the time evaluations were performed. The closed session was then adjourned.

Governor Jay Nixon signed House Bill #1516, sponsored by Representative Jason Smith, aimed at cleaning up obsolete statutes, or laws, of the state of Missouri and reflects the expiration of many laws that are no longer relevant. The bill repeals 14 sections of statutes in their entirety and repeals portions of eight sections, all of which have expired or have expired provisions. Repeal of expired provisions allows the Revised Statutes of Missouri from becoming laden with language that is no longer operative, enhancing public understanding and averting possible confusion. It also saves the state money in printing costs by making sure outdated or obsolete information is removed from statutes and not continually printed. Representative Smith believes this bill will help to clear up any confusion many Missourians may have on the validity of some outdated state statutes. House Bill #1516 will take effect on August 28, 2010.

A fun-filled schedule of games has been organized for kids attending the Salem Heritage Festival this Saturday in downtown Salem. Beginning at 10:00 in the morning on the Dent County Courthouse Square, activities will include a frog-jumping contest and turtle races, watermelon eating contest, sack races, egg tossing contest, three legged races and more. Prizes will be awarded for each of the games, and all ages of kids can participate in these activities. Other contest and game materials will be provided, but contestants in the frog jumping contest and turtle races must bring their own frogs and turtles. Other Salem Heritage Festival events this Saturday include a breakfast at the farmer’s Market, a 5K run from the fire station, a car show, a civil war demonstration, the parade, fireworks at the Salem City Park at dark and more. Food and craft vendors will be selling funnel cakes, snow cones, sodas, burgers, brats and barbeque, and crafters will have a variety of baskets, pottery, soaps and other art available for sale throughout the day on the Courthouse Square. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Parade will be held at 6:00 Saturday night starting from the corner of Franklin and McArthur to the courthouse square downtown. There are 49 entries in the parade with this year’s theme “Our History of Independence” including churches, clowns, business, organizations and politicians. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the parade. Don’t forget to attend this year’s fireworks display as it will be held at the Salem City Park at dark.
