The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent Count Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5140, 5150, 5170 and 5610 and also on various roads in the Jadwin area. Purcell also said that a crew would be patching chip and seal in the Adams Subdivision. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2210, 2240, 2250, 2270, 2340 and 2370.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he spoke with Jack Todd of Victor Heating and Cooling about the problems with the air conditioner on the second floor of the Judicial Building and Todd said he would get back with Skiles about possible solutions to fix it. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the August 4^th Special Election will be July 8^th and that is for residence in the R-80 School District only. At the meeting the Commission agreed to hold their quarterly night meeting next Monday, July 6^th at 7:00 pm in the Associate Courtroom in the Judicial Building and that meeting is open to the public. The Commission then accepted a bid of $500 from Max Edwards to fix and refinish three desks that suffered water damage in the Dent County Extension Office. The Commission will also be accepting proposals for new flooring on the 2^nd floor of Judicial Building. The flooring had to be ripped up after the building flooded a few weeks ago. Anyone interested can contact the county clerks office at 729-4144 and the Commission will open all proposals on Thursday, July 9^th at 10:00 am. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Salem High School Senior Class Group Photos from all graduating classes are still needed at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center for the upcoming exhibit “School Days”.  The exhibit is scheduled to open this Thursday and there are still many classes not represented. The request is for a member (or members) of each former graduating class to bring a group photo of their class along with photos of any reunions the class has held.  The photos will be scanned and reprinted with the original being returned to you.  Please make an effort to see that all classes are represented.  Perhaps you have photos from your parent’s class, your child’s class or another relative’s class they may be needed.  If you have questions as to whether or not your class is represented or for clarification, please call the ONCRC at 729-0029.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving, leaving the scene of an accident, counterfeit money, and traffic stops. On Thursday, June 25^th at 1:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a leaving the scene accident. The report led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem man for leaving the scene of the accident. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released on the summons. On Friday, June 26^th at 10:00 a.m. an officer was detailed to 1009 East Highway 32 to the Town & Country Bank in reference a counterfeit $20 bill. The counterfeit $20 bill was taken as evidence. At 10:15 p.m. that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 42-year old Salem woman for driving while intoxicated and the traffic violation. She was issued summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, June 27^th at 7:00 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a speeding violation that led to the arrest of a 25-year old St. Louis man for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was issued summons to appear in court and released on bond. On Sunday, June 28^th at 2:40 a.m. an officer was assisting the Missouri Highway Patrol and Dent County Sheriff Department on a traffic stop. Investigation during the stop led to the arrest by the Salem Police Department of a 21-year old Salem man for an open alcohol container. He was issued summons to appear in court and released. At 10:30 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to 1002 East Highway 32 to the Break Time Convenience Store in reference to a counterfeit $20 bill. The counterfeit $20 bill was taken as evidence. Anyone with any information regarding the counterfeit money, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold a Special Meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown at the City Hall Council Chambers today at 1:00 pm. The meeting will be held to consider trailer court and liquor license approvals, a petition for annexation, budget adjustments, and the payment of bills. The Board will also consider Bill #3169 an ordinance establishing new rates for electric services provided by the City of Salem, Bill #3170 an ordinance establishing new rates for water and sewer services also provided by the City of Salem and Bill #3168 an ordinance adopting an annual budget for the City of Salem for the 2009/2010-budget year. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Jerline White of Black, age 82, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 am the Locust Grove United Baptist Church in Oates. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at McSpadden Funeral Home in Lesterville.  Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Steve J. Sheffield of St. James, age 50, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 at Jefferson Barracks National Chapel in St. Louis. Visitation will be Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. 

Graveside services for Helen McCall Jackson of Springfield, formerly of Salem, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Raymond W. Hopkins of Salem, age 90, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full Military Honors. 

Funeral services for Winifred “Phyllis” Cooley of Rolla, age 70, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society for Cancer Research. Eastern Star services will be held at 2:00 prior to the funeral services.

Funeral services for Johnny Eugene Elliott of Salem, age 62, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Anutt Cemetery with full military honors.
