Aaron Heilman and Adam LaRoche committed costly errors in the ninth inning, the latter of which scored two runs to give the Cardinals a 6-5 win over Arizona, spoiling a sparkling night for Diamondbacks starting pitcher Dan Haren. Yadier Molina and Brendan Ryan singled to start the bottom of the ninth. Heilman (2-2) then entered from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Adam Wainwright, who put down a sacrifice bunt to the left side of the infield. Heilman bare-handed the ball, but his throw to third base bounced and was wide of the base, allowing pinch-runner Jaime Garcia to score for a 5-4 margin. The Diamondbacks played their infield in and it initially paid off when Randy Winn grounded out to shortstop, keeping the runners at second and third. Skip Schumaker then grounded a ball sharply to first base. Instead of stepping on the base and giving up the tying run, LaRoche came home with the throw, but it bounced by catcher Miguel Montero, giving the Cardinals the win as Ryan and Wainwright scored easily. Cardinal’s starter Chris Carpenter was charged with six hits and three runs over seven innings. Jason Motte got the win for the Cardinals and is 3-2 on the year. The Cards and Diamondbacks play again tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Billy Butler drove in two runs to back Anthony Lerew's solid performance on the mound, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Lerew (1-1) gave up one run on three hits in six innings to pick up his first win in the majors. Lerew, who was appearing in his 17th career game, fanned four batters and walked one. Joakim Soria recorded his 19th save of the year. Mike Aviles went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Royals, who have won two in a row and four of five overall. The Royals and White Sox play again tonight.

The St. Louis Rams on Monday signed eight of their 11 picks from the 2010 draft, including cornerback Jerome Murphy and wide receiver Mardy Gilyard. Murphy recorded 202 tackles and eight interceptions in four seasons at South Florida, where he earned First-Team All-Big East honors in 2009. He was taken in the third round at No. 65. Gilyard, who was selected with the first pick in round four (99th), caught 204 passes for 3,003 yards and 25 touchdowns at Cincinnati. A weapon on special teams, Gilyard returned 93 punts for 2,664 yards and four touchdowns. The Rams also came to terms with tight end Michael Hoomanawanui (132nd), defensive ends Hall Davis (149th) and Eugene Sims (189th), cornerback Marquis Johnson (211th), defensive end George Selvie (226th) and linebacker Josh Hull (254th). The only draftees that remain unsigned are quarterback Sam Bradford, the top overall pick, offensive tackle Rodger Saffold (33rd) and tight end Fendi Onobun (170th).

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. The SMDH Family Medicine will be offering sports physicals for $20 to all school aged children participating in sports activities on July 1 from 1:00 to 7:00 in Physician’s Office Building 3 on the hospital campus. They will accept a check, cash or credit card for payment as no insurance will be filed. Parental consent is needed for any child under the age of 18 either by being there in person or having a signed permission form giving permission for the exam. A dietician and physical therapist will also be available to help with questions. Appointments are encouraged by calling 729-8000, but walk-ins will be accepted with a parent or guardian, or if the child has a signed consent form.
