The Salem R-80 School Board held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. The Board heard a report on Summer School. Summer school began with an enrollment of 303, and is ending this week with an enrollment of 275.  The William Lynch playground equipment will begin to be replaced this summer. The PTO raised $9,000 to go toward replacement of the old wood tiger cage. There is a three-stage plan for the playground, which will be ADA assessable. The Board also discussed the upcoming bond issue on the ballot in August. The district has had some flyers printed up that explain the issue, and stress that there would be no increase in the current tax levy. The flyers explain exactly how the bond works and what improvements would be planned to the district buildings. The board approved the 2009-2010 Professional Development Plan after the program evaluation presented by Krista Barnes.  The board also approved program evaluations on Foodservice by Karen Bundy, technology report by Jim White, and the discipline referral reports by the building principals. Discipline referrals for the year break down to 36 for William Lynch; 348 at the Upper Elementary; 1,561 at the Junior High, and 805 at the Senior High. The board approved some 2008-2009 budget amendments that were adjustments for revenue. They also approved some transfers of funds from the General Fund to the Capital Projects Fund. The ending fund balance for the year, from total funds, is nearly 4.5 million. That gives the district a $129,000 deficit in spending for the 08-09 year. The board approved the 2009-2010 budget Thursday night with projected revenue of 12.6 million. In other action, the board approved the continuance of the Developmental Preschool lease from Headstart at $925 a month for the new school year. They also agreed to continue in their TCRC support agreement for another year, and they approved a digital copier machine lease agreement with GFI from Jefferson City. The lease agreement would be $2,666 a month for the first year, and then $3,320 a month for next four years. The Board then accepted one resignation from Tammy Arnett, Jr/Sr High Nurse. In closed session, the Board employed Alisha White as the Assistant Band Director to replace Drew Overmyer.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Monday, June 22^nd at 9:08 The Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out for a Haz-Mat call on Highway 19 South due to a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival there was one vehicle that had overturned and had paint leaking from its’ container. The scene was brought under control at 10:30 and all four persons returned to the station at 11:54. At  4:23 that afternoon, The Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out due to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 32 East. Upon arrival there was one vehicle with two occupants that had been ejected from the vehicle and the vehicle was fully involved. Eleven firefighters extinguished the fire and assisted the Salem Memorial District Hospital with the occupants. A landing zone was setup for Air Evac and both patients were flew out. The scene was brought under control at 4:57. At 5:12 that evening, eleven firefighters with the Dent County Fire Protection District were paged out to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital and had the scene under control at 5:18. Then at 7:11 that same evening, twelve firefighters with the Dent County Fire Protection District were paged out to assist the Salem Memorial District Hospital. A Landing Zone was setup for Air -Evac and the scene was under control at 8:15. On Wednesday, June 24^th at 11:14 pm, the Dent County Fire Protection District was paged out to set up a Landing Zone at the fire station. Air-Evac was on the ground at midnight and the scene was under control at 12:08 am. A total of nine firefighters responded to the call.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold a Special Meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown at the City Hall Council Chambers on Tuesday, June 30^th at 1:00 pm. The meeting will be held to consider trailer court and liquor license approvals, a petition for annexation, budget adjustments, and the payment of bills. The Board will also consider Bill #3169 an ordinance establishing new rates for electric services provided by the City of Salem, Bill #3170 an ordinance establishing new rates for water and sewer services also provided by the City of Salem and Bill #3168 an ordinance adopting an annual budget for the City of Salem for the 2009/2010-budget year. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Memorial services for Mark Francis Thompson of Salem, age 45, will be held today at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Jerline White of Black, age 82, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Locust Grove United Baptist Church in Oates. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at McSpadden Funeral Home in Lesterville.  Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Steve J. Sheffield of St. James, age 50, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 at the Jefferson Barracks Chapel in St. Louis. Visitation will be Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. 

Graveside services for Helen McCall Jackson of Springfield, formerly of Salem, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Raymond W. Hopkins of Salem, age 90, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full Military Honors.
