The Salem R-80 School Board held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. The Board heard a report on Summer School. Summer school began with an enrollment of 303, and is ending this week with an enrollment of 275.  The William Lynch playground equipment will begin to be replaced this summer. The PTO raised $9,000 to go toward replacement of the old wood tiger cage. There is a three-stage plan for the playground, which will be ADA assessable. The Board also discussed the upcoming bond issue on the ballot in August. The district has had some flyers printed up that explain the issue, and stress that there would be no increase in the current tax levy. The flyers explain exactly how the bond works and what improvements would be planned to the district buildings. The board approved the 2009-2010 Professional Development Plan after the program evaluation presented by Krista Barnes.  The board also approved program evaluations on Foodservice by Karen Bundy, technology report by Jim White, and the discipline referral reports by the building principals. Discipline referrals for the year break down to 36 for William Lynch; 348 at the Upper Elementary; 1,561 at the Junior High, and 805 at the Senior High. The board approved some 2008-2009 budget amendments that were adjustments for revenue. They also approved some transfers of funds from the General Fund to the Capital Projects Fund. The ending fund balance for the year, from total funds, is nearly 4.5 million. That gives the district a $129,000 deficit in spending for the 08-09 year. The board approved the 2009-2010 budget Thursday night with projected revenue of 12.6 million. In other action, the board approved the continuance of the Developmental Preschool lease from Headstart at $925 a month for the new school year. They also agreed to continue in their TCRC support agreement for another year, and they approved a digital copier machine lease agreement with GFI from Jefferson City. The lease agreement would be $2,666 a month for the first year, and then $3,320 a month for next four years. The Board then accepted one resignation from Tammy Arnett, Jr/Sr High Nurse. Francisco Liriano had one of his best outings of the season, and Justin Morneau backed it up with a three-run homer, as the Twins defeated the Cardinals, 6-2, to wrap up a three-game interleague set from Busch Stadium. Joel Pineiro (6-9) was reached for five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for St. Louis, which was a far cry from his two-hit shutout of the Mets that snapped a personal five-start losing streak his last time out. St. Louis has now lost five of seven since an impressive three-game sweep of Kansas City. Jason LaRue and Rick Ankiel knocked in a run apiece for the Cardinals who will host the San Francisco Giants tonight at 6:55.

The Cleveland Indians shipped utility player Mark DeRosa to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for relief pitcher Chris Perez and a player to be named later on Saturday. DeRosa was in his first season with Cleveland after being acquired from the Cubs and was hitting .270 with 13 homers and 50 runs batted in.

David DeJesus belted a solo home run and drove in a pair of runs overall, while Zack Greinke was solid in 6 1/3 innings to lead the Kansas City Royals past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, in the finale of a three-game interleague set at PNC Park. Greinke (10-3) allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to collect his second consecutive win for Kansas City, which snapped a three-game skid. Greinke has surrendered just three runs and has fanned eight over his last two starts. Joakim Soria retired the side in the ninth to pick up his ninth save of the year. Mark Teahen stroked an RBI double and scored once for the Royals, who avoided a three-game sweep. The Royals and Minnesota Twins kick off their series tonight in Kansas City.
