The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson both reported that crews would be out checking roads for any storm damage from Monday mornings heavy rains and strong winds. Commissioner Purcell also reported that weather permitting brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5400 and six tires would be changed on a dump truck.  Commissioner Larson also wanted to report that work would start today on repairing various chip and seal roads throughout District 2. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Larson would be in St. James today for an Ozark Rivers Solid Waste District Council meeting. Skiles along with other presiding commissioners from southern Missouri will also be traveling to Houston on Wednesday to hear a presentation on “Express Clean Line Energy.” The possibility of this type of energy would come from a wind farm in Kansas and would be transmitted to southern Missouri through a power line that is to be constructed. Commissioner Purcell wanted to thank Rob Benowitz of Fleming Variety for his service to the Dent County Tourism Tax Committee; Benowitz’s term recently expired and he served the maximum number of term limits according to state statute. The tourism tax committee recommended Mike Homeyer be added to the Commission to replace Benowitz and all three commissioners voted to elect Homeyer to the tax committee. At 10:30, the Commission watched a webinar concerning how to track utility usage and how to help cut back on the cost of utilities. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred Sunday, June 26th at 12:35 pm in Dent County on County Road 6220 about nine miles southwest of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Ford Thunderbird driven by 24-year old Keith Smith of Salem was traveling northbound on the wrong side of the road while rounding a curve and struck a 1995 Mercury Cougar driven by 18-year old Christopher Wheeler of Salem head-on. A passenger in the Ford, 25-year old Michelle Smith of Salem suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Passengers in the Mercury, 18-year old Kurtis Hartwood of Salem suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment while 15-year old Hailey Hunter of Salem suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Thunderbird sustained moderate damage while the Mercury Cougar was totaled. Whitaker’s Towing of Salem removed both vehicles from the scene.

An accident happened at 1:10 Sunday afternoon in Washington County on Pigeon Roost Road at Forest Service Road 2695. According the highway patrol report, a 2006 Bombardier driven by 21-year old Kaleb Keeven of Steelville was traveling west and attempted to make a left turn and was struck by a 2005 Yamaha YF2450 driven by 22-year old Chad Denent of Steelville was traveling westbound on Pigeon Roost. Keeven suffered minor injuries while Denet suffered moderate injuries, and the Washington County ambulance took both to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Everyone involved was wearing at seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Yamaha sustained extensive damage and was removed by the owner. The Bombardier sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings is pleased to announce that a grant has been awarded to support the South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force. The Sheriff’s Department was awarded $44,186.22 from the Recovery Act/Multi-Jurisdictional Cyber Crime Grant Program through the Missouri Department of Public Safety. This grant, which runs from July 1st, 2011 to June 30th, 2012, will fund the salary of a Special Investigator, provide additional training, and maintain the software and equipment in the digital forensic lab in Salem. Dent County is the recipient of the grant and administers it for the task force agencies. The South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force provides investigative technical support, computer forensic examinations, officer training in identifying and seizing electronic evidence, and Internet Safety presentations to schools in the region. It is comprised of investigators from various agencies and provides services to Dent, Pulaski, Phelps, Crawford, Iron, Reynolds, Shannon, Texas, and Washington Counties.

The City of Salem Finance Committee will conduct a meeting, called by Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman, today at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 3:00 pm for the consideration of the 2011/2012 budget. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that during the month of July, troopers assigned to Troop I will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Crawford County and a DWI saturation in Pulaski County. Captain Kenley would like to remind all motorist that if they need to report an emergency or observe someone driving in a manner that may endanger others, to please dial *55 on your cellular telephone to contact the nearest troop headquarters.

The St. Louis Cardinals added depth to their banged-up infield on Monday, activating third baseman David Freese and infielder Nick Punto off the 15-day disabled list. St. Louis opened roster spots by sending infielder Pete Kozma and outfielder Andrew Brown to Memphis. The Cards play Baltimore tonight at 5:30 on KSMO.

Ryan Ludwick had a two-run home run as San Diego held on to defeat Kansas City, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game interleague series. Jeff Francis (3-9) yielded four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and a walk through five innings as the Royals had their brief two-game win streak snapped. The Royals fell to 0-4 at Petco Park, leaving it as the only active ballpark Kansas City has not recorded a win. The two teams play again tonight.

The St. Louis Blues have given qualifying offers to T.J. Oshie, Ben Bishop and Ryan Reaves. The Blues will retain the rights of each player as they become restricted free agents.

Football camp will start Monday, July 11th at Salem High School. Camp for grades 7 – 9 will be held July 11th through July 15th from 9:00 am to 11:15 am and will meet in the high school weight room each morning. Camp for Grades 10 – 12 will be held July 11th through July 22nd from 5:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Cost for each is $25.

Funeral services for Bruce A. Palmer Jr., formerly of St. James, age 86, will held this morning at 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.  Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time.  Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James.  Memorials may be made to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Funeral services for Charles William Hicks of Rolla, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Salem Avenue Baptist Church in Rolla. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Missouri Veterans Home of St. James.

Funeral services for Wayne M. Light of Rolla, age 83, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens near Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
