An accident occurred at 4:14 Thursday afternoon in Phelps County that took the life of a St. James woman. According to the highway patrol report, 27-year old Derek Robertson of Rolla was driving a 2001 GMC Utility west on Highway 68 about half a mile north of St. James when he turned left into the path of a 2006 Harley Davidson driven east by 59-year old Gary Morrow of St. James. Gary Morrow suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. An occupant on the Harley Davidson, 53-year old Linda Morrow of St. James, was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones. Her body was taken to the Jones Funeral Home in St. James. Everyone was wearing safety devices at the time of the accident.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on county roads 6245, 6380, 6410, and 6240. He went on to say that crews would haul materials to county roads 6245 and 6220 while brush would be cut on county roads 4150 and 4155. Purcell also stated that a man would be screening brown rock at the shop. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would take place on county roads 3170, 3173, 4260, and 3180. He also said that materials would be hauled to 4280 and 4260. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stated that the three tax bills that would eliminate various sales taxes, if becoming law, could eliminate various kinds of sales tax, which would have a negative impact on counties, but the Governor could still veto the bills. County Clerk Angie Curley wants to remind voters that the last day to register to vote in the Primary in August will be July 9th. Curley also stated that she received two bids for the Road and Bridge diesel fuel and gas. Phil-Mart was the lowest bid with $3.13 for 5,000 gallons of diesel and $3.20 for 1,000 gallons of gas. The only other bid was from MFA Oil for $3.21 for the diesel and $3.40 for the gas. Commissioner Larson stated that he received a request from Independent Stave Company to vacate county roads 4130 and 4140. They have a petition signed and the roads lay completely within the land that the Independent Stave Company owns. The Commission will meet with Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley before proceeding. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be at 9:00 Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and it is open to the public.

Highway 32 in Dent and Iron Counties will be reduced to one lane while Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace culvert pipe liners under the roadway. This section of road is located from Route AC in Dent County to just west of County Road 79 in Iron County. Weather permitting, work will take place Monday, June 30th through Wednesday, July 2nd from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. The work zone will be marked with signs and motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area. The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Monday, June 10th at 7:52 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Gray Family Chiropractic located at 504 North Washington in reference to a burglary and theft. The investigation revealed that entry was gained to the building and several items including cash and a laptop computer, valued over $2,000, were stolen. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male for the burglary and theft. He was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine at the time of arrest was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Wednesday, June 11th at 8:09 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Radford’s Car Wash in reference to damage to private property. The investigation of revealed that someone kicked a door in on the building, causing $200.00 in damage. On Friday, June 13th at 8:27 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Animal Shelter in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a 19-year old Salem male had stolen an iPhone, valued at $549, from the building. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Monday, June 16th at 2:59 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Independence Drive in reference to a domestic dispute. That investigation revealed that a 56-year old Salem female had assaulted a 25-year old Salem female. She was arrested, incarcerated on a 12-hour hold, and issued a summons to appear in court. On Tuesday, June 17th at 12:30 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of North Hickory in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a black and white wallet and contents, valued at $100, from a vehicle. At 5:33 that evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 600 block of South Elmer in reference to someone huffing paint fumes. That investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, June 18th at 8:05 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 900 block of South Oak in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone forced open the door on an unoccupied trailer, causing $150, in damage. Justin Turner singled in the only run of the game in the eighth inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game set. Adam Wainwright (10-4) suffered the tough-luck loss as he gave up just one run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings of work for the Cardinals, who had won four of five coming in. The Cardinals and Dodgers play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 8:35.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will host the Los Angeles Angels tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals are 40-38 on the year and four games back of Detroit for the lead in the AL Central. First pitch tonight is set for 7:10.

Ronald Liesman of Rolla, age 79, passed away June 22nd. There will be no visitation and private graveside services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for Betty Sandefer of Sullivan, formerly of St. James, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Graveside services for Betty A. Dudley of Columbia, Illinois, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the North Lawn Mausoleum in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary #99 in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Minnie May Chapman of Boss, age 81, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be from 12:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Minnie Chapman. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
