A fire late Tuesday nearly destroyed a business just west of Licking. A call came in at 10:30 Tuesday night to the Current River Pole Mule located on Highway 32. The chief of the Licking Volunteer Fire Department stated that nearly half of the building that housed hoppers and conveyors was involved when firefighters arrived on the scene. The volunteer fire department requested mutual aid from six other departments and were on the scene for nearly five hours. The building sustained extensive damage. The company makes wooden poles and pellets, as well as wood shavings for pet supplies. There was also a fire two years ago that did damage at the same business. The state fire marshal’s office has been called and will try to determine a cause.
The Salem Police Department released several of their reports. On Monday, June 10th at 7:11 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of East Third in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, June 11th at 7:30 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of East Hunt in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed that someone unknown forcibly entered a residence and took a knife, valued at $25. On Wednesday, June 12th at 9:34 in the morning, an officer responded to Crowley’s Home Works in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that someone unknown damaged a wicker chair and an ad banner valued at $255. On Thursday, June 13th at 9:59 in the evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of East Roosevelt in reference to trespassing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for first degree trespassing. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Saturday, June 15th at 2:50 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to shoplifting. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $10.53. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 573-729-4242.
Dent County Coroner Gina White has released an incident report for 65-year old Thomas P. Jones of Salem, who was pronounced dead on June 25th at the 4:34 in the morning at the Mercy Hospital in St. Louis from traumatic injuries sustained from a one vehicle crash on June 15th on Highway 19 North, Jones was treated by the Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS and was then flown via Air Evac to the Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. His body was released to Wilson Mortuary.

Erik Bedard pitched six solid innings to help the Houston Astros take a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to wrap up a two-game set. Yadier Molina hit a two-run home run and Allen Craig added a solo shot for the Cardinals, who have dropped four of their last five. Lance Lynn (10-2) gave up four runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings to lose for the first time since May 7. The Cardinals have the day off today.
Alex Gordon's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Kansas City Royals over the Atlanta Braves, 4-3, in the finale of a two-game interleague series. Gordon went 3-for-5 with a solo homer for the Royals, who bounced back after losing the series opener by a 4-3 margin on Tuesday. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Twins tonight.
The St. Louis Blues have kept one of their burgeoning talents in the fold, signing defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk to a four-year contract. The 24-year-old was slated to become a restricted free agent. Shattenkirk ranked second among Blues defensemen with 23 points while playing all 48 games this past season.

Funeral services for Edith Rosella Hardin Dunn of Steelville, age 86, will be Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
