The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, a disturbance, a transport in lieu of a mental commitment order, theft, and fights in progress. On Wednesday, June 15th at 9:45 at night, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for assaulting a 17-year old Salem male.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Then at 10:35 that same evening, an officer was detailed to the Walnut Bowl Motel in reference to a disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Thursday, June 16th at 2:48 in the afternoon, a 62-year old Salem male was transported to the New Hope Psychiatric Facility in Sullivan in lieu of a mental commitment order. That same afternoon at 2:59, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a pair of Nike tennis shoes valued at $130 that were left sitting on the lawn. Later that night at 9:13, an officer was detailed to the 1200 block of South Jackson in reference to a fight in progress. That investigation led to the arrest of a 48-year old Salem male for assaulting a 52-year-old Salem male. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. That same night at 9:50, an officer was sent to the Crossroads Shopping Center in reference to a fight in progress. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct and an open container. He was issued summons to appear in court and was released. Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded two traffic fatalities during the month of May this year. This is two less than May of last year. The total fatalities for 2011 are twelve, which is the same as last year. During May of this year, there were 29 accidents and five injuries reported in Crawford County, while in Dent County, there were 16 accidents and seven injuries reported. In Laclede County, there were 28 accidents and 15 injuries reported, Maries County had five accidents reported, and there were 63 accidents, 21 injuries, and one fatality in Phelps County. In Pulaski County, there were 41 accidents, 18 injuries, and one fatality recorded. Troop I recorded 182 accidents and 66 injuries in May this year. That is compared to 203 accidents and 74 injuries for May of last year.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the May 23rd meeting, Comptroller Stephanie Wofford will present the summary of operations and statistics reports for May. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will present the nursing services and ancillary services reports. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will update the Board on the hospital activity calendar, the auxiliary report and legislative issues. In old business there will be a strategic planning goals update for 2011 and a TCRC discussion. In new business, the Board will address hospital purchases. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Annual Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Independence Day Parade with the theme “Stars and Stripes” will begin at 6:00 pm on Monday, July 4th and run from the old fairgrounds to the Historic Dent County Courthouse. All entrants must fill out a parade entry form and those entry forms need to be returned to the Chamber of Commerce office no later than TODAY!!!. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released several arrest reports. On Saturday, June 11th at 6:14 in the evening, 27-year old Benjamin Dickherber of St. Louis was arrested and was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released. On Sunday, June 12th at 4:56 in the afternoon, 50-year old Kenneth Green of Chicago, Illinois was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor possession of marijuana, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and was later released. On Thursday, June 23rd at 12:13 early in the morning, 33-year old Michael Jones of Salem was arrested and charged with felony driving while revoked, speeding, and no seat belt. He was taken to the Pulaski County Jail and later released. On Friday, June 24th at 11:45 in the morning, 20-year old Caitlyn Chism of Elkland was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor unlawful of drug paraphernalia and speeding. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and later released.

Larry Sexton’s jumper at the buzzer in overtime lifted the Missouri Seniors Basketball Team of Sellers-Sexton over North Carolina, 54-53 to win the National Championship Friday afternoon at the Senior Olympics held in Houston, Texas. Wednesday afternoon the team of Larry Sexton, John Brown, Charles Pace, Steve Hauck, Joe Brickner, and Rich Nieman defeated South Carolina by a score of 48-29 putting the team in the Winner’s Bracket of the double elimination tournament. Then on Thursday morning, they defeated a highly talented team from Texas (the Ball Hawgs) by the score of 57-51. Thursday afternoon they won a rematch with North Carolina 50-41 (who they defeated in their opening game on Tuesday, 45-41) to set up the championship game Friday.

Ricky Romero essentially beat the Cardinals single-handedly with a four-hit shutout and a two-run single, as the Toronto Blue Jays completed their sweep of St. Louis with a 5-0 victory. Cardinal’s starter Kyle McClellan hung a breaking ball to J.P. Arencibia in the second inning, and the catcher deposited the offering into the left-field seats for his 11th home run of the season. That was the only mistake McClellan (6-4) made until things fell apart in the sixth when Toronto scored four times. All five runs McClellan allowed were earned. He gave up eight hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings. The Cards are off today.

Alex Gordon led a balanced attack, going 2- for-4 with a double and an RBI, as the Kansas City Royals downed the Chicago Cubs, 6-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set. The Royals scored four runs on five straight hits to start the game to make it easier on Luke Hochevar (5-8) as he allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Joakim Soria faced the minimum in the ninth to record his 13th save of the season. The Royals, who took two of three from Chicago, will be in San Diego tonight.

Football camp will start Monday, July 11^th at Salem High School. Camp for grades 7 – 9 will be held July 11^th through July 15^th from 9:00 am to 11:15 am and will meet in the high school weight room each morning. Camp for Grades 10 – 12 will be held July 11^th through July 22^nd from 5:20 pm – 8:30 pm. Cost for each is $25.
