The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4230, 4235, 5690, 6370, 6590 and 6640.  Simpson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 5610, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5615. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2080, 2083 and 3140, and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3220 and 5240. Tune also said that he met with the FEMA representative that is assigned to Dent County and he said that all the damage that was done to the roads in District 2, because of flooding has been repaired. This does exclude the chip and seal roads that were damaged and they will be addressed at a later date, but the total cost for fixing the gravel roads that were damaged came to $215,000 and the county has turned that into FEMA for reimbursement. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Meramec Regional Emergency Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday in St. James and also a series of seminars concerning e-mail protection and the Sunshine Law in Jefferson City on Wednesday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting has begun for the August 5th Election and will continue until 5:00 pm on August 4th. Curley also wanted to remind everyone that the last day to register to vote for the primary election in July 9th and if you have had an address change since the last election, please contact the clerk’s office with that information. Judges William Camm Seay and Kelly Parker along with Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks and a large group of concerned citizens attended the meeting to discuss the issue of the prosecutor’s office moving to the new building that was purchased by the county. Judge Seay said the Prosecutor’s Office and the Juvenile Office both need more room and since they are both offices of the court they are good candidates to move. He said that the potential cost to move the Juvenile Office’s computer system would be around $15,000, but that would be split among the 5 counties that are in the juvenile offices district. Judge Seay also said that the building would need to be ADA accessible and cleaned up before anyone moves into it. Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks does not want to move her office because of safety and security issues, and because it would cost the taxpayers money. She also said that it would be a major disruption to her office. She suggested that the Probation and Parole Office’s be moved. Commissioner Skiles said that a number of citizens had mentioned to him the possibility of moving the Extension Office and the Public Administrators Office because that would allow the Prosecuting Attorney to have a ground level office. Commissioner Simpson and Judge Seay both stated that the Extension is not a county office and the county is not responsible for providing them with a building. The idea of putting in an elevator was also brought up and Commissioner Tune said the county has applied for grants to help with the cost of an elevator, but was never awarded any grants. Tune said the county looked into the cost of putting an elevator in the courthouse and judicial building about seven years ago. The cost for the courthouse would have been $90,000, and the cost for the judicial building would have been about $120,000. Some citizens mentioned that a town hall meeting should be held concerning this issue because the public should have an input on which offices should be moved. The citizens also felt that they should also be informed of the costs that will be involved with moving certain offices. The Commission did not vote on which offices will be moved and the next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened Wednesday evening at 7:15 in Washington County on Route C at Courtois Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 1990 Toyota Camry driven by 49-year old Tammy Trogdon of Viburnum was traveling northbound on Route C. Trogdon failed to negotiate a curve to the left. The Toyota traveled off the right side of the road and began to skid. The vehicle then skidded across Route C and traveled off the road and overturned ejecting a passenger. Suffering serious injuries was 20-year old Jenny Crader of Viburnum and she was taken to St. John’s Hospital in Creve Coeur by Arch Helicopter. Trogdon and 21-year old Kendra Lefler of Viburnum suffered minor injuries and were transported by the Iron County Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The other passengers: 15-year old Jeffrey Bartosic and 14-year old Joe Chambers of Viburnum, suffered minor injuries and were transported by the Washington County Ambulance to the Washington County Hospital.  No one involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Salem Finance Committee met Thursday morning to review the budget situation for the city. City Clerk Mary Happel said that the Telecommunications tax issue has been resolved which added about $150,000 to next years’ budget that reduced the total budget deficit to about $390,000. The board of aldermen and finance committee did decide to hire an additional police officer as the city is short two officers right now and the overtime would equate to another officer’s salary. The finance committee has decided to cut out all donations such as those for the Salem TCRC, Dent County Museum, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem Area Community Betterment Association, Dent County Extension, Project Graduation, etc. that totals about $43,000. Even with all the cuts, the committee agreed that an additional electrical rate increase would still be needed to balance the budget. Increases of 5%, 10% and 13% will be reviewed at a special meeting to be held sometime on Monday. That meeting will be open to the public.
