An accident occurred at 4:20 Monday morning on Highway 68 about six miles south of St. James that left a Salem man with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Harley Davidson Road King driven southbound by 55-year old Joey L. Luebbert of Salem, struck a deer in the roadway and overturned. Luebbert was ejected and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. The Road King sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Dishman’s Towing of Rolla. Luebbert was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

An accident happened in Dent County at 8:55 Saturday morning at the Shawnee Mack Lake Conservation Area about a mile east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chrysler 300 driven westbound by 31-year old Mark Calkins of Salem, ran off the right side of the road and struck some trees. Calkins suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Dent County Ambulance. The Chrysler sustained moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. Calkins was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

An accident happened on Highway 72 about three miles west of Bunker Friday afternoon at 4:40. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Lincoln Navigator driven westbound by 19-year old Jonathan Jones of Bunker, skidded off the road and struck a tree. Jones suffered minorinjuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in Salem by ambulance. It was not known if Jones was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Navigator sustained minor damage and was left at the scene to be removed later by the owner.

An accident occurred on Tuesday, June 18th at 9:28 in the morning on Highway 32 at Gertrude. According to the Salem Police report, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Kenneth Mowrey of Salem was traveling west on highway 32 when a pedestrian walked out into traffic. The Chevrolet made contact with the pedestrian, causing him to flip over the vehicle and land on the asphalt on the driver’s side. The pedestrian suffered moderate injuries. The Chevrolet Cavalier sustained minor damage. Three witnesses stated the pedestrian walked out in front of the vehicle.

The Dent Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 5520, while materials were going to be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 6050. He also mentioned that ditch work was going to be done on county road 6190 and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6495. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2200, 4353 and 4355, while materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3030, 3040 and 3050. He did add that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2240 and 3240. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioner Larson would be attending the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management Council meeting this morning at 10:00. Skiles also presented a rough draft of a letter to the Secretary Sally Jewell of the Department of Interior from the commission that opposes the White River National Blueway designation. Skiles will send copies to all the state and federal legislators from our area as well. The commissioners approved the letter. Sherry Lea from Dent County Rural Addressing came in to discuss a couple of addresses that may need to be changed from their original rural address designation as the numbering appears incorrect. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Contractors for the Missouri Department of Transportation began work to improve two roadways in Crawford and Dent counties yesterday. Crews will resurface 11 miles of Route 32 between Route 72 and the Salem city limits and add two-foot shoulders to the roadway. Resurfacing and two-foot shoulders are also planned for 23.5 miles of Route 19, between Route 49 in Cherryville and the Salem city limits. Motorists should expect lane closures and minor delays through the duration of the project, which is scheduled for completion in the fall. The Kansas City Royals also had the day off yesterday but will start a two-game series with the Atlanta Braves tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10.

Funeral services for Herman Hewkin of Davisville, age 84, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be given to the Martin-Trask Cemetery.

Funeral services for Allen Shelton of Salem, age 92, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery or the Dry Fork Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Paul Hogan of Salem, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Memorial services for June Botkin of Licking, formerly of Salem, age 87, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Ivy Watson of Salem, age 65, will be held Friday at 4:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery in Gladden. Memorials are suggested to the Empire Cemetery.
