The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that a cross over pipe would be installed on Dent County Road 6570 and the rest of the District 1 crew would be preparing Dent County Road 6380 for chip and seal.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2060, 2590, 4050, 4055, 4405, 4410 and 5320.  Larson also said that rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2240, 2270, 3200, 3220 and 4050.  The rock is from FEMA and is being placed on the roads that were washed out due to flooding last year.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee ballots are now available for the August 3^rd Election and anyone that needs to register to vote in order to vote in the August 3^rd Election must do so by July 7^th. Rob Heberer with Erb Equipment came by the meeting to discuss new equipment with the Commissioners.  At the previous meeting the Commission approved to advertise bids for a Single Circular A133 Audit for the year 2007 on Federal Grant money; bids will be opened on July 19^th at 10:00 a.m. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices boardroom. After approval of the agenda, consent and communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf addressed student recognitions and noted that Collin Heavin and Ashton Baker both had perfect attendance in kindergarten, Ryan Smith was named to the Class 3 First Team All District Baseball; Ashton Karr and Ryan Smith were named to the SCA First Team All Conference Baseball; and the Salem Tennis Team went to state for the second year in a row. Rumpf reported that William Lynch had 148 students and the Upper Elementary had 160 students for a total of 308 in attendance for summer school. Rumpf wanted to publicly thank Intercounty Tele-Tech as they have chosen to waive $700 of the $800 monthly maintenance fee for the district for the Show-Me Technologies. In old business, the Board was to approve the A+ handbook with changes and after further investigation, it was approved as is. The Board then approved the new program evaluation schedule and program evaluations for foodservice, technology, career ladder, the professional development plan and discipline. The Board also approved the professional development plan for the school year 2010/2011. The Board then approved the budget updates for 2009/2010 and resolution for WADA 7% transfer and the proposed 2010/2011 budget based on current figures with revisions that could still be made before the final budget. The developmental preschool building lease was tabled. The Board then approved Board policy IGCE with changes and also approved updates on three job descriptions. The Board approved the renewal of the contract with the Salem TCRC for support and then accepted the retirement of Jan Cunningham as at the Lower Elementary Reading Recovery teacher, the resignation of Marsha Gibson as a para-professional and Donna Ford as custodian of for the Upper Elementary. The Board then voted to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing student issues and personnel.

The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown this morning in the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 10:00 am for the consideration of the budget for the year ending 2011. The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Crawford County on Sunday, June 20^th.  The checkpoint was conducted from 6:00 until 10:00 p.m., on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park.  During the course of the four-hour operation troopers stopped 350 vehicles.  The checkpoint resulted in four DWI arrests, 15 seat belt violations, eight driver’s license violations, seven uninsured motorists violations, one violation for careless and imprudent driving, one misdemeanor warrant arrest, one misdemeanor drug violation, one other misdemeanor criminal arrest and a total of 62 warnings were issued.
