The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative boardroom. Superintendent Steve Carvajal reported that the school will have a new website and it should be online before July 1^st. He said that the drivers ed car has been received for the upcoming year, and that new dugouts have been installed at the city park field for the girls softball team. A new press box is also to be installed before the season starts. Carvajal said summer school was a great success with nearly 400 children attending. He reported that the natural gas conversion saved the school about $35,000 this past year and the payback for installation costs should be accomplished in about two years. In the building project, Phase 1 is underway as the trailers are gone, the asbestos removal is about finished, demolition will start on Wednesday and the roofers will begin on July 8^th and are to be completed around August 20^th. He mentioned that the new busses have been ordered and Fisher Tracks is expected to start work replacing the track on July 1^st. That project will last until the first week of August and people will NOT be able to use the track during that time. The Salem Elementary, Upper Elementary and the Jr. High School all received the Missouri School Wide Positive Behavior Support Bronze Medal this past year. Larry Hart from L. J. Hart was in attendance to discuss the bond issue. The general obligation bonds for the school have been rated AA+ and locally there has been $2,925,000 sold to the banks. Town and Country Bank purchased $1,245,000, the Bank of Salem bought $925,000 and Progressive Ozark Bank purchased $755,000. The cost of issuance of the bond is $72,000 and there will be an agency fee of $300 per year. The bonds will have a call feature on March 1^st of 2018 and would be sold in $5,000 denominations. The closing date will be July 11^th when the school receives their bond proceeds. The board approved the Weighted Average Daily Attendance transfer of 7% from the general revenue fund to the building fund, approved a non-resident student from the Northwood R-4 district, and approved adopting the state model of the Special Education Compliance Plan. The board tabled discussing the Developmental Preschool Building Lease and tabled revising the athletic policy IGDK until the next meeting when they will also review the academic policy. The board declared available surplus property and it will be posted on the school’s website. The board approved a preliminary budget for the 2013-2014 school year that will be amended either in July or August once the final revenue and expense totals for this year have been compiled. The board accepted the resignation of Jackie Ard from Food Service, and agreed to create a pre-school teacher position that will be paid for by federal money. The preschool program will be a half-day program. According to guidelines, one teacher can handle ten students for the morning classes, and then again for the afternoon classes. If there is more interest, either an aide would be hired or another teacher if there are over 20 students in each class. The board approved the bid for the purchase of two school busses from Jadwin Canoe Rental for $4,506 each, and they approved the bid from Gray Construction to build a storage building for $29,670.00. The board then went into closed session where they hired Tina Whitaker as a Special Education Teacher at the Upper Elementary, Judith Wood as 8^th grade English Language Arts teacher and approved a one-year sabbatical leave for Nancy Major. The Board also approved the appeals and reinstated A+ for three students. The meeting was then adjourned.

Contractors for the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin work to improve two roadways in Crawford and Dent counties beginning today. Crews will resurface 11 miles of Route 32 between Route 72 and the Salem city limits and add two-foot shoulders to the roadway. Resurfacing and two-foot shoulders are also planned for 23.5 miles of Route 19, between Route 49 in Cherryville and the Salem city limits. Motorists should expect lane closures and minor delays through the duration of the project, which is scheduled for completion in the fall. The Texas Rangers weathered the storm in St. Louis and did just enough damage to Adam Wainwright to take a 2-1 victory and hand the Cardinals their first series sweep of the season after a three-hour rain delay. Wainwright (10-5) was handed an unlucky loss despite limiting Texas to six hits over 6 2/3 frames. He was charged with two runs, but only one earned. Matt Carpenter had two hits and accounted for the Cardinals' only offense with a solo home run. The Cardinals have the day off today.

The Kansas City Royals used a three-run, two-out rally in the eighth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-6, and salvage the finale of a three-game set. Mike Moustakas and David Lough each opened the inning with singles off Jesse Crain (2-2), who had a scoreless streak of 29 straight appearances snapped. Elliot Johnson's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases, and Alex Gordon drew a walk to score Moustakas. The Royals have the day off today.
