The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a domestic disturbance, property damage, thefts and counterfeit money. On Thursday, June 17
th at 1:00 PM, an officer was detailed to the 1500 block of South Water in reference to a domestic disturbance that led to the arrest of a 60-year old Salem man for assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. At 2:00 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to property damage that led to the detention of a 14-year old male juvenile for shooting windows with a BB gun. He was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer. At 5:00 p.m. that afternoon, an officer responded to the City Park in reference a theft. The investigation revealed that checks and a telephone were stolen from a vehicle. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 19-year old Salem woman on the theft. She was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. On Friday morning, June 18
th at 10:30, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of South Carty in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown had broken two windows from a residence. The windows were valued at $200. Then at 7:00 that night, an officer was sent to Country Mart on Highway 32 East in reference to a counterfeit $10 bill. On Saturday, June 19
th at 5:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of North Park in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown had entered a residence during the day and took without permission a Wii game valued at $300. On Sunday morning, June 20
th at 3:00, an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of West Gibbs in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report revealed that an intoxicated individual was creating a disturbance. This led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem man for failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer. He was transferred to the Salem Memorial Hospital and will be issued a summons to appear in court. Anyone with any information regarding the disturbance, property damage, theft or counterfeit money reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is launching a summer-long effort Monday to rid homes of mercury, with nearly 50 mercury drop-off locations throughout the state. The department is working with fire departments and county health offices to provide drop-off buckets in communities statewide. Private citizens or nonprofit agencies visit these sites and leave mercury-containing instruments, like thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, thermostats or switches. The department is asking that anyone seeking to dispose of items at these sites prepare the items for drop off by first securing the item in two zip-top bags and then placing it in a sealed container such as a coffee can or plastic margarine tub. The extra packaging is required to prevent the release of mercury if the item breaks while being transported. The program, however, does not include compact fluorescent bulbs. The Department of Natural Resources will collect the dropped off items after the campaign ends on Oct. 22 and transport them to Jefferson City. A state contractor will then pick up the items and recycle what can be recycled and properly dispose of the remaining items. Anyone who is uncomfortable with transporting mercury instruments, or who has large quantities of mercury, can contact the department's spill line at 573-634-2436 to arrange to have items picked up. The list of drop off sites in southeast Missouri includes the Dent County Health Department at 601 S. McArthur. You can call 573-729-3106 and they are open from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. weekdays; and the Phelps County Health Department at 200 N. Main St. in Rolla. You can call them at 1-800-301-4942.
Two new souvenir items are available to help celebrate Salem's 150th Anniversary. Coffee mugs and commemorative coins are now on sale at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. The coffee mugs are 11 ounces and the commemorative coins have a solid brass core and are gold-plated. The mugs and coins are $10 each and will help fund additional activities and celebrate the Sesquicentennial. The ONCRC is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Souvenirs will also be available during the Salem Heritage Festival July 3rd through July 10th.

Matt Holliday homered for a fourth consecutive game and Jaime Garcia continued to impress as a full-time member of the rotation, as St. Louis got by Toronto, 9-4, to open a three-game interleague set at Rogers Centre. Holliday finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and David Freese had a two-run single as part of a go-ahead four-run fifth frame. St. Louis had four home runs in all with Colby Rasmus checking in with a pinch-hit, two-run homer and Yadier Molina and Felipe Lopez each chipping in a solo blast. Garcia (7-3), meanwhile, won despite being charged with his highest earned-run total all season -- three -- through 14 starts. The 23-year-old lefty lasted six innings, gave up six hits and recorded four strikeouts against no walks. The Cardinals and Blue Jays will play again tonight starting at 5:45 on KSMO Radio.
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols remained the leading vote-getter among National League players in the latest fan balloting results for this year's All-Star Game, which will be played July 13 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. St. Louis' Yadier Molina still leads all catchers with 1,322,095 votes.. All-Star teams will be announced July 4, after which time fans will select the 34th player for each league's roster in Final Vote balloting.
Josh Willingham went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI as the Washington Nationals took a 4-3 decision over the Kansas City Royals in the second of a three-game interleague set. Scott Podsednik drove in all three runs for the Royals, who have lost their last five games. Anthony Lerew (0-1) took the first loss of his career as he was charged with four runs on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings of work. Kansas City will play Washington again this afternoon in Washington.
The SMDH Family Medicine will be offering sports physicals for $20 to all school aged children participating in sports activities on July 1 from 1:00 to 7:00 in Physician’s Office Building 3 on the hospital campus. They will accept a check, cash or credit card for payment as no insurance will be filed. Parental consent is needed for any child under the age of 18 either by being there in person or having a signed permission form giving permission for the exam. A dietician and physical therapist will also be available to help with questions. Appointments are encouraged by calling 729-8000, but walk-ins will be accepted with a parent or guardian, or if the child has a signed consent form.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.
