The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning in the Commission office at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that crews would be grading on Dent County Roads 5420, 5440, 6090, 6100, 6400 and 6410. Crews will also be cleaning out washed out culverts in the Wisdom Subdivision. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that crews in District 2 will be grading on County Roads 2130, 2200, 2360, 2590, 3305, 4283 and 5200.  Crews will be hauling rock to County Roads 2103, 2200, 2360 and 4283. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a meeting Thursday with MoDOT on Safer Highways. MoDOT reported that we’ve had 16% less fatalities this year than last year. Skiles also reported that work is progressing well at the Judicial Building.  Insulation is now in, and the ceiling tiles were installed yesterday. Work should be completed by Wednesday or Thursday. Carpeting will be cleaned and shampooed by Surf Pro at a cost of about $560 if the carpeting needs to be cleaned all the way to the Judge’s Office. There is also a problem with the air conditioning upstairs in the Judicial Building. Salem Refrigeration is the company that services the unit. Skiles also reported that he was informed that the President has made a Disaster Declaration for public assistance and individual assistance for our area for the flooding and wind damage from the May 8^th storm. That is all the information the county has at the time, but when more information is available about the disaster declaration, they will be passing it on to the public. The County has received a verbal commitment from the Attorney General’s office to send help to the Prosecuting Attorney’s office to help with the backlog of cases. Lastly, absentee voting begins today for the August election.  The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Dent County Courthouse.  The meeting is open to the public. 

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops. On Monday, June 15th at 1:24 a.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem male for driving while drugged and a minor in possession of intoxicants.  He was issued summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, June 16th at 4:29 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 50-year-old Viburnum male for driving while intoxicated.  He was issued summons to appear in court and released.

U.S. Senator Christopher “Kit” Bond announced that a Listening Post Forum would be held in Salem. The Listening Post Forums are meeting with Missourians held by Senator Bond’s staff. During these meeting, Missourians are invited to discuss their concerns with federal policies and agencies. The meeting in Salem will be held at the Dent County Courthouse on Wednesday, June 24^th beginning at 2:00 pm. 

The heat and humidity of Missouri’s summers are a traditional threat to small children, the elderly and the chronically ill, but they can also take their toll on young, healthy people as well. Among the 10 Missourians who died last year from heat-related causes, only three were age 65 or older. Seven were age 25 to 64 years of age. Between 2000 and 2008, 203 Missourians died from heat-related causes. The elderly and the chronically ill are often more vulnerable because they perspire less and are more likely to be taking medications that can impair the body’s response to heat. Those medications include antihistamines, heart drugs, over-the-counter sleeping pills, antidepressants, anti-psychotics, major tranquilizers and some medications for Parkinson’s disease. Seniors on fixed incomes often do not have air conditioning or feel they cannon afford the expense of running it. Children are also sensitive to heat. They need to drink plenty of fluids during hot weather. Infants and young children should never be left unattended in any hot environment, especially cars, even if they are running with the air conditioner on. Missourians are urged to call the state’s toll-free abuse and neglect hotline at 1 800 392-0210 to report any senior adults or persons with disabilities suffering from heat or needing assistance.

The City of Salem’s Utility Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, on Thursday, June 25^th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:30 pm to consider utility rates. The meeting of the City of Salem’s Utility Committee is open to the public. 

Weather permitting the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing the right turn lane on northbound Route 63, at the intersection of Route 72 in Rolla this week. During the closure, crews will be replacing the signal pole. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform pothole patching on Route 32 in Dent and Texas Counties, from Route 119 in Dent County to Route 137 in Texas County, this week. Weather permitting, crews and equipment will be on the roadway between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Patching potholes is necessary to restore shape and roadway stability. While performing this function, crews and equipment are located directly on the roadway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when moving through the work zone. Funeral services for Liz Hinch of Steelville, age 57, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Keysville Cemetery in Keysville, Missouri.

Memorial services for Bill Lay of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 12:00 (noon) at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be private.
