The Salem R-80 Board of Education met the William Lynch Elementary School Conference Room for the regular meeting Thursday night. Superintendent Steve Bryant said that the attendance last year came in at almost 94% which is good for the schools foundation formula. He said that board should be wary of Senate Bill 711 that will affect the property tax levy of schools, and could possibly have some effect on the proposed bond issue. He said that the summer school this year was down just slightly from last year with 404 children in kindergarten through 6^th grade compared to 416 last year, and 17 in the junior and senior credit recovery program this year compared to 22 last year. He said that work continues on the William Lynch Elementary School roof on the east side and the lighting project continues at the upper elementary school. He said that the new administrative office in the old Prestige Golf building at Route J and Dilworth Lane is just about completed and the football field work has been completed. Bryant said that a special meeting would be held on June 26^th at 6:00 to discuss the bond issue with Greg Bicker as well as to interview candidates for the board of education to replace the members that have resigned. The board approved the professional development program evaluation and the plan for next year as presented by Joey Crossgrove. Assistant Superintendent Cindy Rumpf then passed out a CIA test to evaluate personalities of the board that is presented in different colors. Bryant then gave the technology program evaluation and said that 91 computers were installed last year and there are now over 500 computers in the R-80 school system. Bryant said that the PTO elected new officers and will hold a meeting on August 18^th at 7:00 at the William Lynch Elementary School Conference room. The board approved the revision to the 2007-2008 budget that shows about a $391,000 deficit that included the costs of the expansion of the upper elementary school and the roofing project at the elementary school. The board then approved a copy of the 2007-2008 budget as the starting point for the 2008-2009 budget. The board also approved the Developmental Preschool Building lease at $925 per month that is reimbursed by the state, approved the Special Education Compliance Plan, approved continuing the partnership with the Salem TCRC for $10,000 per year that also covers the public education requirement for the district, and approved the resolution to transfer funds from the general revenue fund 1 to capital projects fund 4 based on the calculations of CPA Ed Pratt. The board accepted the resignation of board of education member Greg Stephens and will select two new board members from three qualified applicants at the June 26^th special meeting after interviews are conducted. AJ Seay had already resigned from the board. The board approved the A+ program evaluation, and also the discipline program evaluation even though one of the biggest problems at the school continues to be cell phone usage in the classroom. The board accepted three board policy revisions and rejected three others before agreeing to allow Superintendent Bryant and Carolyn Boyle to move the school funds from the Bank of Salem to the Town and Country Bank. In closed session, the Salem R-80 Board of Education employed Jennifer Rensch for Junior High Science and Lori Barton as a Lower Elementary/Junior High ½ time Art Teacher before the meeting was adjourned.

An accident happened in Dent County on Highway 32 about 12 miles west of Salem Friday afternoon at 3:30. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup driven by 61-year old Donald Johnson of Salem, went off the right side of the roadway and over-turned. The vehicle then hit an embankment and overturned again and came to rest after striking a tree. Johnson was ejected from the pickup and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield by an Air Evac helicopter. The pickup was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. Johnson was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a Special Meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, at the City Council Chambers, located at 202 North Washington on tonight at 5:00. The Board will vote to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel.

The Sellers-Sexton basketball team successfully defended its Senior Olympic state championship title Saturday in Columbia.  They went 3-0 and earned the right to represent Missouri in the National Senior Olympics Games to be held  in San Francisco, California next summer. Team members include Larry Sexton, Charles Pace, Randy Noll, Mike Gyovai, and Steve Hauck, John Brown and Terry Bozzay.

Kevin Youkilis blasted a game-winning two-run homer off Mike Parisi in the bottom of the 13th inning as Boston downed St. Louis, 5-3, to avoid a sweep in the finale of a three-game interleague set at Fenway Park. Mike Lowell greeted Parisi (0-3) by ripping a single of the famed Green Monster before Youkilis, who also homered in the seventh inning, drilled an inside fastball over the Monster in left-center. Dustin Pedroia finished 4-for-5 with a run scored for the Red Sox, who have won three of their past five games and now lead the AL East by 1 1/2 games. Jon Lester allowed two runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings but was long gone by the finish. Javier Lopez (2-0) earned the win by recording two outs a scoreless 13th. Aaron Miles was 5-of-6 for the Cardinals, who have dropped four of six games. Adam Kennedy, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth, was 3-for-3 with an RBI. The Cardinals are off today before starting a 3 game series in Detroit Tuesday.

Joey Gathright's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped an impressive comeback, as the Kansas City Royals overcame a seven-run deficit to upend the San Francisco Giants, 11-10 in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series. David DeJesus went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Mike Aviles drove in three for the Royals, who have won seven of their last eight games. The comeback made a winner of Ron Mahay (3-0), who hurled two scoreless innings of relief. Joakim Soria sealed the victory in the ninth with his 20th save of the season. Kyle Davies didn't make it out of the second inning, getting touched for five runs on six hits and two walks while recording just four outs in the no-decision. Giants starter Tim Lincecum did not have his best stuff, allowing five runs on six hits to go with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Alex Hinshaw (1-1) was saddled with the loss in yielding the game-winner in the seventh. The Kansas City Royals will be in play against the Colorado Rockies tonight starting at 7:10.
