An accident occurred Monday, June 20^th at 3:30 in the afternoon in Phelps County on Highway B about five miles north of St. James that took the life of St. James woman. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 20-year old Earl Briggs of St. James was traveling northbound on Highway B. Briggs lost control of the Mitsubishi on a hill, ran off the left side of the road, struck a ditch and overturned several times, coming to rest on it’s top and ejecting four occupants. Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinford pronounced 23-year old Cassie Brady of St. James dead at the scene at 4:22 pm. Briggs suffered moderate injuries and a passenger, 18-year old April Bullock of St. James suffered serious injuries and were flown to the University Hospital in Columbia. Also suffering moderate injuries and taken to the Phelps County Hospital were 22-year old Brett Edgar, 18-year old Malinda Fraley and 21-year old Donald Holt all of St. James. No one involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mitsubishi Eclipse was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

An accident occurred on Monday, June 20^th at 8:45 pm in Dent County on County Road 6090 about six miles West of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 18-year old Cody Amsden of Salem, was traveling northbound when he lost control of the Jeep on a gravel roadway, traveled off the left side of the road and struck an embankment causing the Jeep to overturn onto a fence. Amsden along with two passengers, 17-year old Nicholas Fletcher and 19-year old Arika Wolff also of Salem, all suffered minor injuries and were transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle. Wolff was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 6:45 Friday evening in Shannon County at the intersection of  County Roads 271 and 2221 about six miles southwest of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 1991 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 23 year-old Amber Brown of Ellisnore lost control and struck a tree. The accident occurred as Brown was traveling too fast for the conditions. Brown suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to the St. Johns hospital in Creve Coeur. Two occupants from Bunker in the vehicle, 20 year-old Larry Suhling and 30 year-old Travis Turner, suffered minor injuries. Suhling refused treatment at the scene, but turner was taken to the Ellington hospital by private vehicle. Brown was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Suburban was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

On Thursday, June 16, 2011, 33-year old Johnny Sieg, Jr., of Salem surrendered himself to authorities on a warrant from the Circuit Court of Dent County, Missouri charging him with Possession of Child Pornography. This came about as a result of an investigation by the South Central Missouri Computer Crimes Task Force, and the Dent County Sheriff’s Office. Sieg was released after posting bond. The charges are merely accusations, and each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The South Central Missouri Computer Crime Task Force provides services to Dent, Pulaski, Phelps, Crawford, Iron, Reynolds, Shannon, Texas, and Washington Counties.

Residents within the eight-county Meramec Region who received a residential survey asking for information on high-speed Internet usage and needs are asked to complete them and return the surveys by the June 30 deadline. The residential broadband survey is a part of Gov. Jay Nixon’s MoBroadbandNow initiative, which seeks to expand high-speed Internet access throughout Missouri. The survey will assist Regional Technology Planning Teams (RTPTs) by assessing residences’ current broadband status, needs, and challenges. Some 4,000 randomly selected households in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties received the household survey. Surveying local communities provides data on broadband access and infrastructure to help meet the needs of citizens, businesses and government. The RTPT is also seeking input from people involved in various business sectors, including agriculture, energy, environment, healthcare, higher education, K-12 education, business/industry, library, local government, public safety, tourism, workforce development and economic development. Those surveys are available at www.mobroadbandnow.com/rtpts/meramec. Visitors are also encouraged to test their Internet connection speed, while on the website. The Phillies sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the eighth inning Tuesday to beat the Cardinals, 10-2, in the opener of a three-game series. Philadelphia only had five hits in the inning to go along with two hit batters and five walks. Trevor Miller took the loss, charged with two runs in just 1/3 of an inning. Starter McClellan was hoodwinked out of a win after giving up one run and five hits in seven strong innings. The Cards and Phillies play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

Chris Young and Wily Mo Pena each blasted home runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a 7-2 victory in the opener of a three-game set. Luke Hochevar (4-8) surrendered five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six over seven innings. Alex Gordon belted a home run and drove in two runs for the Royals who have dropped three straight and five of six. The Diamondbacks and Royals play again tonight.
