The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5450, 5480, 6600, 6610 and 6620. He also reported that the Swiney Bridge located on Dent County Road 5680 off of “A” Highway is now open. Purcell said that a crew would be installing a new crossover pipe on Dent County Road 5680 along with cleaning out the old ones and hauling brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2200, 2340, 5330 and 5535 and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 2240. Larson also said that two crossover pipes would be installed and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 3260. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Advanced Electrical of Salem was awarded the bid of $57,500 to purchase and install a generator at Oak Grove Baptist Church through the Region I Homeland Security Grant Program.  Oak Grove is Dent County’s designated emergency shelter and back up hospital if there was to be a major disaster. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. During the hearing of persons, Linda Williams reported from her notes to the Board about dogs continually running loose in her neighborhood and also brought to the Boards attention some houses in her neighborhood that she felt were in nuisance violators. Nuisance Officer Rick Raw was in attendance and comments were exchanged between he and Ms. Williams and then halted. Mayor Brown did ask Ms. Williams for a copy of her notes, which she gave him and she told the Board that she had sent a letter also to the paper. The Board approved the bid from Kiowa Line Builders, Inc. of Tipton, Missouri for $32,610.26 for the Reconductor of 5,433 feet of 3-Phase line from #6 copper wire to #2 ACSR wire. Mayor Brown did point out that this item had been budgeted and is due to start next week and that this business had done work for the City before. Brown also pointed out that the City had bought the material and that this is just the labor charge. Mayor Brown then reported that 1,379 people used the fitness center and 1,220 used the TCRC during the month May. Brown said that the recycling trailer setup at the Upper Middle School is collecting twice as much as before, but did report that there have been some junk and non-recyclable items that have been dumped in the bin. Brown reported that during the Capitol Improvement workshop held last Wednesday, the City is renting a tree trimming truck and that they have a demo on site for $3,000 a month. Rent for the truck will go towards the purchase of the 2007 International, which will cost $89,000. Brown wanted to remind everyone of the 4th of July festivities going on downtown on Saturday, July 3^rd, and the ice cream social on Monday, July 5^th at the City Park, and street dance on Friday, July 9th. Brown also reported that the 3rd Saturday in October, (10/16), will be a regular recycling day at 3rd and Grand Streets in Salem and that will also be for electronics as well. Brown will be in Sedalia on Thursday to look at a bio-mass project and on Friday at 10:00 there will be a Finance Committee meeting. The Board then approved Bill #3199, which is an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute a contract on behalf of the City of Salem to engage the law firm of Cunningham, Vogel & Rost, P.C. for legal services. The Board approved closing 4th Street in Salem on July 3rd and July 9th as requested by Mayor Brown. The Mayor then appointed George LaJoie to fill the unexpired term of East Ward Alderman Jim Jackson who passed away. A motion was made and not seconded. Kenneth Nash then asked that the item be put on the agenda as he felt that everyone had been kept in the dark on the matter. The Board then approved a total of seven liquor licenses and three out of four trailer court licenses with the fourth being held up until the inspector could re-inspect based on nuisance reports. After approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board voted to dismiss. The next meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman will be held on Tuesday, July 6th at the City Hall Council Chambers and will start at 7:00 PM as July 5th will be recognized as a holiday by the city with the 4th falling on a Sunday.

Two new souvenir items are available to help celebrate Salem's 150th Anniversary. Coffee mugs and commemorative coins are now on sale at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. The coffee mugs are 11 ounces and the commemorative coins have a solid brass core and are gold-plated. The mugs and coins are $10 each and will help fund additional activities and celebrate the Sesquicentennial. The ONCRC is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Souvenirs will also be available during the Salem Heritage Festival July 3rd through July 10th.
