The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Administrator Dennis Pryor reported that the summary of operations for the month of May showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $6,239 for the month with a year to date total of $590,408. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 753 emergency room visits, 176 ambulance runs, 14 surgeries, 349 clinical visits, 243 home health visits, 8,295 lab tests, 1,248 radiological procedures, 36 MRI scans, 348 CT Scans, 104 dialysis procedures visits and 1,289 cardiopulmonary procedures were performed. Linda Knight, Director of Radiology, gave a demonstration on the hospital’s new Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) machine. She expressed her appreciation to the Board for approving the purchase of this much needed computer generated x-ray machine.  Pryor explained that he and Leon Kreisler recently attended the MHA Leadership Conference. The board asked Lacy to explain the errors in medical care reporting system that is in place at SMDH. She explained the hospital is 99% error free in caring for patients.  Pryor reported that the legislatures are looking at approving MO HealthNet, the new program that will replace Medicaid in Missouri and would begin in July 2008. He also reported that the USDA $740,000 interest free loan has been approved for the new physicians office building. The contract will be signed when construction begins. Pryor explained that the re-opening of the birthing center was discussed at the medical staff meeting and recruitment of two physicians will begin in the near future. The board approved a budgeted purchase of a printer for the administration for $134; a monitor for $154 for emergency department, and another monitor for the physicians station for $191, all from CDWG; they approved the budgeted purchase of eight air handlers for maintenance for $5,796 from Johnston Supply; approved the purchase of a CO2 monitor for cardiopulmonary for $2,234 from Respironics; approved the purchase of two refrigerators for the lab department for $4,625 from Cape Supply; approved the purchase of a fire alarm connector for maintenance for $8,500 from TEC Electric, and approved  the purchase of patient room ceiling and lighting for Acute Care for $10,055 from various vendors. They also approved a non-budgeted purchase of a compact refrigerator for cardiopulmonary for $135 from Wal-Mart and a paper shredder for acute care for $459 from Universal Business. The board then went into closed session.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces the annual Independence Day Parade will take place on July 4, 2007 at 5:00 pm. The parade theme is “A Star Spangled Celebration”. Military personnel will serve as the Grand Marshals. The Chamber asks everyone planning to participate in the event to enter by Wednesday, June 27th. Entry forms are available at the Chamber office, and can be filled out in the office or called in at 729-6900. The Chamber will award $100 to the best commercial and non-commercial entry.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin a three game series against the Philadelphia Phillies starting tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO. St. Louis has won four of the last five games. The Cardinals will play at noon tomorrow and at 1:00 Sunday afternoon.

 The Kansas City Royals will travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers this weekend in a three game series.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announced his on-field staffs for the 2007 All-Star Game to be played at San Francisco's AT&T Park on July 10. La Russa named Willie Randolph of the New York Mets and Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants to the National League staff.  La Russa's St. Louis coaching staff consisting of pitching coach Dave Duncan, bullpen coach Marty Mason, first base coach Dave McKay, hitting coach Hal McRae, third base coach Jose Oquendo and bench coach Joe Pettini will all be on hand.

The National Hockey League will hold its annual Entry Draft this weekend, starting Friday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, and the Chicago Blackhawks will get first crack at this year's pool of talented youngsters. This year's draft is expected to be a wide-open affair, and fans should be prepared for surprises beginning with the very first pick. None of the players are considered to be can't-miss prospects. The St. Louis Blues through trades have three first round draft picks in this draft.

The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions penalized the University of Colorado's athletics program on Thursday for major violations. The school has been placed on probation for two years, fined $100,000 and will have to reduce scholarships among other sanctions for violations involving 133 non-scholarship student-athletes in six sports that were undercharged for training table meals. The university, NCAA enforcement staff as well as the infractions committee discovered that the violations were inadvertent.

Funeral services for Ruby D. Smith of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Marvin Lester Vogeler of Rolla, age 81, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 on Monday. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Gideon’s International.

Funeral services for Karen Curtis of Salem are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Memorial services for Marvin George Hargus of Rolla, age 63, will be held Friday, June 29th at 2:00 at the First Assembly of God Church in Rolla.
