The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams indicated that the CART tax for the county was up $1,501.86 for the first six months receipts in 2013 over the same time period in 2012. The June receipts for 2013 were $3,736.18 more than the June receipts from 2012. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2430, 2490, 5520 and 6400, and that material was going to be added to county road 2470. Purcell said the road crew would be installing a crossover pipe on Dent County Road 5170, cutting brush on county road 6283 and one man will be screening gravel. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 2330. He also reported that the workers have been doing repair work on chip and seal roads with the Dura-Patcher and cold mix, and they have completed county road 6150. They will be working on Dent County Roads 3260 and 3280. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the stoplight at Highway 32-72 East and Doss Road. Even though this is in the city of Salem, Skiles said that he talked with MoDOT engineer Preston Kramer who said that the vehicle detection eye has malfunctioned and a new one had to be ordered. It will be installed by mid July. He also said he attended a South Central Council of Governments meeting at Pamona and the discussion was about the White River Blueway designation. Hosted by Mike Evans from West Plains, none of the commissioners from the counties that are included in the “watershed” had any idea this was being done. After a short discussion, the Dent County Commission agreed to send a letter on county letterhead to the Department of Interior indicating their opposition to the plan. This was done instead of signing the resolution brought in by David Murphy of St. James at the Monday meeting. Skiles also reported that there is some money available for Dent County for home repair work for those who have low income, are disabled or are veterans. The money can be used for weatherization of the home or making a home ADA compatible. This funding just became available and if persons are interested in what the qualifications are or an application, please call Maria Bancroft at the MRPC offices at 573-265-2993. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for Sunday, June 9^th. At 12:44 in the morning, an officer investigated a suspicious vehicle parked in a parking lot near Center and Highway 19. The investigation led to the arrest of a 17- year old Salem male for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that morning at 8:55, an officer made contact with a 33-year old male near Highway 19 and Franklin who had two active City of Salem arrest warrants. The suspect was taken into custody on the warrants and incarcerated. Later on that morning at 10:36, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 inreference to a theft of fuel. The investigation revealed that the driver of an unknown vehicle pumped $3.75 in fuel and left without paying. Later on that afternoon at 3:54, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. That investigation revealed that someone took items valued at $122.75 from a red 1996 Ford truck parked in the 800 block of East Center. Later on that evening at 5:48, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of East Third reference someone trespassing. That investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem male for trespassing.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Missouri State Highway Patrol released two arrest reports for Dent County. On Saturday, June 15^th at 4:30 in the afternoon, 65-year old Thomas Jones of Salem was arrested and charged with a DWI. He was released from the Dent County Jail to EMS. On Monday, June 17^th at 12:01 in the morning, 31-year old Sara Carmack of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while revoked and careless and imprudent driving. She was released from the Dent County Jail.

Celebrate summer with a favorite outdoor pastime for many Missourians, frogging season. It begins at sunset on June 30^th and ends October 31^st. Frogging can be practiced with either a fishing permit or a hunting permit. The Wildlife Code of Missouri allows those with a fishing permit to take frogs by hand, hand net, atlatl, gig, bow, trotline, throw line, limb line, bank line, jug line, snagging, snaring, grabbing or pole and line. With a hunting permit, frogs may be harvested using a .22-caliber or smaller rifle or pistol, pellet gun, atlatl, bow, crossbow, or by hand or hand net. The use of an artificial light is permitted when frogging. Children under the age of 16 and Missouri residents over the age of 65 are not required to have a permit. Missouri has two frog species that are legal game, bullfrog and green frog. The daily limit is eight frogs of both species combined. Catch eight frogs before midnight, and start frogging again at 12:01 a.m. to catch another day’s limit. However, it is not legal to possess more than one day’s limit while on the water and banks where daily limits apply. The possession limit allows you to store no more than 16 frogs at a time. Once a frog is speared, it must be harvested. The Wildlife Code of Missouri prohibits the release of a speared frog as “wanton waste” because the animal is not likely to recover. Any frog taken into actual possession, unless immediately released unharmed after being caught, is included in the daily limit.

The South Central Missouri 2013 Cattlemen’s Tour will be held July 15^th through the 18^th sponsored by the Dent County and Maries County Extensions. This year, the tour will go to Portageville to the Missouri University Delta Center which is an MU Ag Experiment station. From there, the tour will go the Four L Herefords in Atwood, Tennessee, then to the Triple L Ranch in Franklin, Tennessee before the tour makes a stop at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville where participants will take in a show. The 5^th stop on the tour will be a two hour “do it yourself” tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville before moving on the Robert Elliott and Sons Angus Farm in Adams, Tennessee. The 7^th stop on the tour will be to King Livestock in Hopkinsville, Kentucky while the final stop will be at the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Simpson, Illinois. The cost of the tour is $900 per couple or $550 for a single person and that will include all transportation, lodging and noon meals, plus any other tickets or fees associated with the stop. There must be a minimum of 30 paid participants for the tour to be held. Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig added a two-run pinch-hit single, while Matt Carpenter and David Freese added one RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who won three of four in the series. Lance Lynn (10-1) became the fourth 10-game winner in the majors after tossing six innings of one-run ball. Lynn scattered three hits and two walks while striking out six to pick up his fifth win in as many decisions. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will start a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox. The Royals are 34-36 on the year and are in third place in the AL Central. First pitch is set for 7:10.
