Mark Ellis' pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the eighth inning proved to be the difference, as the Oakland Athletics got by the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Busch Stadium. Matt Holliday provided the offense with three hits, including a pair of solo homers, for St. Louis, which had won four of five coming into the contest. Albert Pujols and Felipe Lopez had the other two hits for St. Louis. Cardinals starter Jeff Suppan, who was making his second start since being signed by St. Louis after getting released by Milwaukee, allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 4 2/3 frames. Blake Hawksworth (1-4) took the loss giving up a run in the 8th inning. The Cardinals finished their six game home stand with a 4-2 record. The Red Birds will have the day off today and face the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow.
Eric Hinske doubled home the tie-breaking runs in the eighth inning to lift Atlanta to an 8-5 win over Kansas City and a series sweep of their interleague matchup at Turner Field. Chris Getz had two hits and two RBI, and Jose Guillen had two hits, drove in a run and scored twice for Kansas City, which has dropped four out of five. Kyle Davies lasted 4 1/3 innings in his first start against his former team, giving up four runs on four hits and seven walks, while fanning six. Victor Marte finished the fifth to keep the Royals in front before Jones evened the game in the sixth with a double off Kyle Farnsworth. Blake Wood (0-1) took the loss for the Royals who will face the Washington Nationals tonight.
Michael Bradley's goal eight minutes from time allowed the United States to rally from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Slovenia at Ellis Park Stadium on Friday in Group C play at the FIFA World Cup. Landon Donovan scored a goal in the 48th minute before Bradley smashed a shot past goalkeeper Samir Handanovic after Jozy Altidore nodded down a long ball. The Americans thought that they had taken the lead three minutes later when Donovan's free kick was finished off in front of the goal by Maurice Edu, but he was controversially disallowed. The result leaves Slovenia on top of the group with four points, while the United States is tied with England with two points through two games. If the U.S. beats Algeria in its last Group C match on Wednesday, it will advance to the knockout round regardless of the outcome of the England/Slovenia match the same day.
