The Salem Park Board met for their quarterly meeting Wednesday at the Salem Community Center at the Armory. At the meeting, Park and Recreation Director Greg Nash said this year the baseball and softball seasons got off to a late start due to the soccer program running later than expected and some rainy weather. To catch up, Nash said there are more games on Friday nights than there has been in the past. He said he discussed scheduling games on Friday nights with the coaches before the season and they didn’t have a major problem with it. He said that the season would be extended for some age groups as late as July 18^th due to the Independence Day holiday falling on a Thursday. Games will not be held that day or on Friday, July 5^th. Nash did indicate that he has set up a Facebook site for game cancellations: City of Salem Park and Rec. He said he would use that site in case of rainouts as well as using KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com on the index page. Nash then said that the entire pool house has been renovated, and a new lift has been added to the pool for ADA compliance. He said there are 12 certified lifeguards this year and attendance so far at the pool has been very good. Nash indicated that the pool is scheduled to close on August 10^th before school starts. Alderman Phillip Giacomelli suggested that instead of closing the pool at that time, the city could open the pool up to those at the Salem Fitness Center to use. Nash said that he would talk with Director Susie Cahill about the suggestion to see if there would be an interest in doing that. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that Disc Golf would be set up at the city park by July 10^th. The original configuration will feature nine “holes” or baskets. He says that if the Disc Golf catches on, they could add another nine “holes” next year. The board discussed holding Flag Football again this fall. Last year, the program was open to those children in 4^th through the 6^th grade. This year, they talked about expanding the program to include children in the 1^st through 3^rd grade with the coach acting as the quarterback. In order for this to occur, it was decided to try to find a softer “ball” so that the youngsters wouldn’t be hurt or afraid of the ball. The suggestion of using a “Nerf” football was made and Nash will see what kind of balls might be available. Signups for Flag Football would begin when school starts. Administrator Lucas said that accessibility around the city park has been increased with a new sidewalk. He also went on to say that the City Park bathrooms would be renovated to match the pool house. Lucas told the board that there are plans to make Al Brown Fields just as accessible as the city park with new sidewalks as well as new ways to go up and down the hill. Lucas did not know exactly when that would occur as the city has other projects that will take precedence, but hoped it would be before year’s end. The 2013-2014 basketball signups were discussed. It was suggested holding them during the month of December during home basketball games for the boys and girls, and then start the season in January. This was brought up because the boy’s basketball team will not play a home game at all in January and the gym may be available more often. By starting the season earlier, there would be some time between the basketball program ending and the spring soccer program starting. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their June meeting tonight at the Salem R-80 boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carjahal will then give a summer school update, there will be a recognition of Missouri School Wide Positive Behavior Support, an MSBA Board update and BOE committee assignments. In new business, a resolution for the WADA 7% tranfer will be presented. The Board will then consider approval of non-resident student(s), the Development Preschool Building Lease, and adopt as SPED Compliance Plan. The Board will then approve bond items from LJ Hart, consider a revision of Board Policy IGDK, declare surplus property, approve the 2013/2014 budget and address resignations. In old business, the Board will then approve bus bids, bids for construction of a storage building and then adjourn the regular meeting and move in Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The regular June meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

On Monday, June 17^th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Office was contacted in reference to a stolen lawn mower from the Northwood R-4 School District. The mower is described as a yellow, Hustler FasTrak Super Duty with a 60-inch deck. The theft occurred between the evening of Friday, June 14^th and the early morning of Monday, June 17^th. Deputies are seeking information regarding this investigation. Anyone with any information is urged to call the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241.

Would you like to get an up-close look at the place where the local highway folks work on all those road and bridge projects you encounter? That opportunity is available on June 25 when MoDOT will celebrate the opening of its new project office at 17855 Route 8 in St. James. The open house will run from 9:00 am to noon. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served. MoDOT’s seven-foot tall work zone mascot, Barrel Bob, will greet visitors at the office, and attendees can have their photo taken with Barrel Bob’s younger self, Baby Bob. In addition, several pieces of the equipment MoDOT uses to maintain the area’s roads and bridges will be on display, along with MoDOT staff to explain how the machinery works. Attendees are encouraged to bring a camera or smart phone to take photos of themselves with Barrel Bob and the equipment. The project office had originally been located in Rolla, but was moved to St. James in February as part of MoDOT’s efforts to consolidate its facilities. The South Central Missouri 2013 Cattlemen’s Tour will be held July 15^th through the 18^th sponsored by the Dent County and Maries County Extensions. This year, the tour will go to Portageville to the Missouri University Delta Center which is an MU Ag Experiment station. From there, the tour will go the Four L Herefords in Atwood, Tennessee, then to the Triple L Ranch in Franklin, Tennessee before the tour makes a stop at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville where participants will take in a show. The 5^th stop on the tour will be a two hour “do it yourself” tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville before moving on the Robert Elliott and Sons Angus Farm in Adams, Tennessee. The 7^th stop on the tour will be to King Livestock in Hopkinsville, Kentucky while the final stop will be at the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Simpson, Illinois. The cost of the tour is $900 per couple or $550 for a single person and that will include all transportation, lodging and noon meals, plus any other tickets or fees associated with the stop. There must be a minimum of 30 paid participants for the tour to be held. Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer in the sixth to back seven solid innings from Jake Westbrook, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-1, in the third test of a four-game series. Pete Kozma and Allen Craig added an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who saw Westbrook (3-2) give up one unearned run on two hits. The Cardinals and Cubs will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.

Michael Brantley drove in three runs as the Cleveland Indians earned a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the rubber match of a three-game set at Progressive Field. Eric Hosmer and David Lough each had three hits and drove in one run for the Royals, who wrapped up a seven-game road trip with a 4-3 mark. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Maxine Helen Jones of Salem, age 92 will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. 

Funeral services for Jean Bass Dean of Arizona, formerly of Salem, will be Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
