The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday for their regular meeting and immediately went into closed session to discuss litigation. Back in open session, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf said that 163 children attended summer school at William Lynch, 174 at the Upper Elementary, 18 at the junior high and 29 at the senior high. She said that walls have been moved and new carpet has been installed at the junior and senior high offices. In old business, the bid ran out on propane and the school will have to put out for bids again. The board heard from Cindy Stogstill about a mentor program called Kids Hope where an adult will mentor a young student one day a week for a whole year. The program is offered through New Harmony Church and has been going on now two years. The board approved revisions to the 2010-2011 budget, adding revenues from the financial institution tax funds, and changing the expenses from the title programs and ARRA. The revision came out $4,816 in additional revenues. The board approved a resolution to transfer 5% of their weighted average daily attendance from fund 1 to fund 4. This amount comes to $392,156.86. The board also approved a bid from Haddock to purchase Promethian Boards for the remaining 27 classrooms at a cost of $100,381 that included installation and hardware. The money will come from fund 4, and with the WADA transfer, the fund 4 budget will increase by $291,775.86. Rumpf recommended that the tuition for the 2011-2012 year for the rural school students remain the same as 2010-2011 at $7,417.68 per student. The board approved the recommendation. The board approved a budget for 2011-2012 where salaries will make up 41.6% of the funds with support staff getting 12.1%. Retirement and Insurance will take up another 6% each while supplies will be comprised of another 5.7%. After this year, it is estimated that the district will have about 24.94% of their budget in unrestricted reserves. The board approved a request to accept a non-resident student from Northwood R-4, and they approved the Developmental Preschool Building Lease. The board approved the board policy JGGA that is required by Missouri state statutes, and they agreed to continue their support of the Salem TCRC as long as federal funds are available. The board approved the Board of Education assignments before declaring the surplus property to be advertised to the public with sealed bids to be accepted. Salem High School Principal John Smith said that 81 students were A+ Certified this past year which set a record by 18 students. He said that some changes are being made that will affect the class of 2015. A state change says that the student must score proficient or advanced on the Algebra 1 EOC. He also said that R-80 is going to tighten up the rules on the 95% attendance requirement and that any Citizenship Appeal will go directly to the Board of Education. The board accepted the resignation of elementary school teacher Marla White. The board then went into closed session where they employed Jillian Doddema-Bone as a junior high science teacher and assistant volleyball coach. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will meet tonight at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers for their regular meeting. The board will hear bids for a new server for the utility system and city offices. After the Consent Agenda, the board will hear a report from Director Public Works Bill Huffman and Mayor Gary Brown. The board will then discuss Resolution #10-2011 that authorizes the mayor to sign a letter of understanding between the city and Austin Peters Group for the recruitment process in hiring a new city administrator. In new business, the board will discuss a new cut off time for items to be placed on the agenda, discuss approval of liquor licenses, discuss approval of trailer court licenses, receive two petitions for annexation and approve bills before the board goes into closed session to discuss litigation and contracts. The meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 6:15 Saturday evening in Texas County on Route N about four miles west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Honda ATV driven by 38-year-old Dannie Pogue of Licking overturned while turning into a private drive. Pogue suffered serious injuries and was flown to St. John’s in Springfield by Cox helicopter. The owner removed the ATV from the scene with minor damage.

An accident occurred at 12:45 Saturday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 68 about eleven miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 GMC pickup driven by 55-year-old Paula Schenck of Salem traveled off the left side of the roadway, became airborne, struck a culvert, struck a fence, and came to rest in a creek-bed. Schenck suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Skip Schumaker belted a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Cardinals to another dramatic 5-4 win over the Royals. Tim Collins (3-4) delivered a fastball over the plate and Schumaker sent it over the wall in right-center, giving the Cardinals the win in the three- game series. The homer came after the red-hot Alcides Escobar tied the game with a solo blast in the top of the ninth against Fernando Salas (4-1). Albert Pujols hit his 17th homer in the game before injuring his wrist and shoulder in a collision at first base with Wilson Betemit. Cardinals’ starter Jaime Garcia allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up seven runs, walked one and fanned five. Danny Duffy allowed six hits and walked one in 3 2/3rds innings before leaving with cramps. Both teams will have the day off today.
