The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. During the summary of operations for the month of May, the report showed inpatient revenues were down in all areas, and even though expenses were held in check, the result was a loss from operations of $148,632, with an excess of expenses over revenues of $144,160 after tax revenues. Year-to-date, the hospital is showing an excess of revenues over expenses of $8,264. The cash flow statement showed a decrease in cash of $213,849, mostly due to three payrolls being paid in one month. The days in accounts receivable in May was 49, which is up from 48 in April. Noticeable in the aging of the accounts receivable was the increase in the Private Pay balance that is leading to more bad debt. This increase may be due to the higher deductibles many people have with the new health care reform. There were 56 acute care patients admitted with an average or 7.9 patients per day. In the Director of Nursing report for the month of May, Carol Lacy reported there were 787 emergency room visits with 43 transfers. The average turn around time in the ER was 114 minutes for the month. There were a total of 205 ambulance runs with 207 patients being assessed and 153 patients being transported, 16 surgery cases, 2,001 outpatient registrations, 200 Home Health visits, 12,688 lab tests that includes those for the May Health Screening, 1,034 radiological procedures, 149 CT scans, 18 MRI scans, 11 nuclear med scans, 2,621 cardiopulmonary procedures, 481 rehab treatments, 203 dialysis treatments and 253 clinical visits with both surgeries and VA treatments being down. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported on the statewide mock earthquake drill where the scenario was the Salem water towers failed and a natural gas leak occurred in the area land locking the Salem Hospital. The “paper” exercise went well as coordinated through the emergency plan of Deborah Hobson who Lacy gave credit for the hospital’s plan. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor reported the hospital auxiliary has discontinued the gift case due to the lack of vendor supplies. The auxiliary did approve the purchase of a new Sunsetter Awning cover for Long Term Care. Assistant Superintendent Kasey Lucas reported the CPSI physician documentation follow-up would be held on July 9^th. He also said the IT risk assessment will be done in July as CPSI will look at their system and the full network to make sure they are secure. Foundation Program Chairman Joe Brand said the foundation would have a kick-off dinner that has been tentatively set for September 18^th. The board discussed the fiscal year 2015 operating and capital budgets. The operating budget calls for total patient revenues of $39,907,100 with deductions from revenue of $21,387,632 and operating expenses of $16,677,089 that leaves an expected gain from operations of $4,491 before taxes. The capital budget includes planned expenditures of $104,000 for a new call light system, $85,000 for information system purchases, $43,000 for maintenance that includes a new utility vehicle and parking lot repairs, $69,000 for a new EMS Defib monitor, $13,500 for stretchers in Surgery and $24,000 for a new car. These items will be paid out of expected tax revenues of $480,000. The board then approved the fiscal year 2015 operating and capital budget unanimously. The board also approved the purchase of two thin laptop computers for the clinics for a total of $1,895 from SHI with a two year extended warranty to replace the old XP laptops. Pryor said that some suggested revisions to parts of the employee handbook should be available at the next meeting. The board then went into closed session.The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their June Meeting tonight at the boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will give updates on the building project and summer school, BOE committee assignments and the annual school bus inspection report. The William Lynch, Upper Elementary, Junior High and Senior High principals will then report on happenings at each of the respective buildings. In new business, the Board will address a resolution for the WADA 7% transfer, consider approval of non-resident students, approve surplus property bids and declare surplus property. The Board will also consider the approval of the roof project at the Upper Elementary, a bus purchase and leasing of two buses, and the MSBA 2014B policy and procedure updates. The Board will then approve the 2014-2015 budget and address resignations. The Board will vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The June meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers finished the Salem Shootout with a 3-1 record. They
began the day with victories over Bunker, Chillicothe, and Potosi before dropping the final game of the day in a rematch with Chillicothe.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers played their first games of the summer on Wednesday night, playing makeup games against Cuba in the Rolla Summer League. In the varsity game, Salem won 9-5 while the JV won by a score of 16-1.

Bartolo Colon worked eight innings, and Eric Young's RBI ground-rule double in the seventh inning was the difference, as New York escaped St. Louis with a 3-2 victory in the finale of a three-game set. Matt Carpenter scored twice and drove in a run for the Cardinals, whose five-game win streak came to a halt. Lance Lynn (7-5) tossed six innings in defeat, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking four. The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

Jeremy Guthrie spun 6 2/3 solid innings and the Kansas City Royals surged to their 10^th straight win with a 2-1 decision against the Detroit Tigers. Guthrie (4-6) allowed just one run on four hits and a walk while tying a season-high with nine strikeouts to win back-to-back outings for the first time since starting the season 2-0. Omar Infante connected on a solo home run and Alex Gordon drove in a run for the Royals, who will play the Tigers again this afternoon.

Funeral services for Donald Lee Midyett of St. James, age 75, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time on Saturday. Interment will be in the Upper Indian Creek Cemetery in Viburnum.

Funeral services for Leroy F. Nixon of Rolla, age 81, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Owensville City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Phelps Regional Hospice.

Graveside services for Betty A. Dudley of Columbia, Illinois, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Sunday, June 29th at 1:00 at the North Lawn Mausoleum in Salem. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Legion Auxiliary #99 in Salem.

Funeral services for Flo Martin of Cherryville, age 80, will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be given to the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church.
