The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. Deloris Gray Wood, the president of the Dent County Historical Society, discussed with the commissioners a living history remembrance of the Skirmish at Inman Hollow that took place in Dent County 150 years ago on July 7th. The event will be held at the Upper Parker Community Church and will begin at 10:00 on July 7th with a North and South ceremony followed by a small Civil War skirmish re-enactment. A small Civil War camp will be set up with period tents. The event is sponsored by the Dent County Historical Society, and a picnic lunch will be served at noon. The event is free and open to everyone. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in a request for the quarterly transfer of $9,750 to Assessment Operations from the General Revenue Fund, and she also brought in a request to distribute money from the County Schools Savings Account to the area schools including Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3, Northwood R-4, Iron County C-4 and Bunker R-3 schools. The amount of $161,050.14 needed to be transferred to holding before it could be distributed. The commissioners approved both requests. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4124, 4150, 4155, 6283, 6287, 6320, 6460 and 6650. He said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6250 and rock will be hauled to Dent County Road 6550. Purcell went on to say that a man would be screening rock at the shed and that Tom Schulte from Roy Blunt’s office would hold a listening post in Salem this Thursday at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3120, 3180 and 4380; while materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2340. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4280 and 4290, and that a man would be hauling rock to the shed. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting last Thursday and Preston Kramer from MoDOT reported that traffic deaths in the MRPC region is up 43% over last year for the first five months of the year. There will be a meeting of the South Central Coalition of Roadway Safety at the MRPC at 2:00 today and the meeting is open to the public. He also said that the Route H Bridge would be opening soon, possibly even today. Skiles said that Kramer indicated that a ribbon cutting ceremony of the completion of the three bridges in Dent County would be held at a later date at the Highway 32 Bridge which Kramer said was set in record time for the completion of a bypass and then the bridge. Skiles also indicated that he was nominated for and is now the representative for the Dent County Public Sector with the South Central Community Action Agency Board. They will be meeting in Winona tonight. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock notified the commissioners that the real estate tax sale for property with delinquent taxes would be held on August 27th at 10:00 on the courthouse steps. He said that the advertisements for the sale would be placed in the Salem News on July 17th, 24th and 31st. Persons now paying their real state taxes will have to do so by cash, cashier’s check, money order, or a debit or credit card. Checks will NOT be accepted. Those who pay taxes after July 1st will also have to pay an additional $25 per parcel in the Salem News. For more information, contact Dennis Medlock at 729-3911. The commissioners also discussed the contract dealing with the purchase of the old Parks Lumber property covering lots 1, 3, 4 and the east half of lot 2 in Block 1 of the City of Salem. Their intention at this time is to create a much needed parking lot in Salem with the property. A couple of questions came up with the contract that the commissioners wanted Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson to review before signing. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred on Wednesday, June 6th at 3:50 in the afternoon in the 1200 block of Highway 32. According to the Salem Police report, a 1993 Chevrolet K1500 driven by Clinton Flowers of Salem was parked in a designated parking space facing east. Flowers got in his vehicle, started the engine, put the vehicle in reverse and pressed the accelerator. The Chevrolet sped across the parking lot in reverse heading west, collided with a parked and unoccupied 1996 Ford F150 owned by Jack Headrick of Salem. The Chevrolet continued west and collided with a retaining wall. Flowers then put the Chevrolet in drive and drove forward, and then stopped as Flowers was dazed and confused. Flowers was transported by the Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and then flown out by Air Evac. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage, the Ford sustained minor damage and the retaining wall also sustained minor damage. The Chevrolet was then towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The South Central Missouri 2012 Cattlemen’s Tour brought to you by Maries and Dent County and the MU Extension and will run from July 16th to July 19th. The tour departs on the 16th at 7:00 am from the SC Regional Stockyards in Vienna. The first stop will be to the Southwest Research Center in Mount Vernon. Throughout their tour they will also make other stops to the Pasture Based Dairy Farm Tour in Monett, the Ratcliff Ranches in Vinita, Oklahoma, the Gray G Bar Ranch in Grainola, Oklahoma, the Stockyard City and National Stockyards in Oklahoma City, the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City National Memorial/Bricktown and the last and final stop on July 19th will be at the Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, Missouri. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invites businesses, organizations, and individuals to participate in the community’s 2012 4th of July parade on Wednesday, July 4th.  This year’s theme is “America’s Past, Present and Future” and it will start at 6:00 PM. The Grand Marshall this year is Ed Gill, a lifelong Salem resident and businessman, who achieved the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade in the United States Navy. Gill served aboard a minesweeper during the Invasion of Normandy in WWII. A one hundred dollar prize will be awarded to the best “Commercial” and “Non-Commercial” float. On June 8th-10th the age 13 and under Salem Tiger Baseball Team won the Branson 13U AA Baseball Tourney. The Salem Tigers went 6-0 in the tournament beating the Willard Tigers 14-8 to sweep the tournament. Then on June 15th-17th, the 13 and under Salem Tiger Baseball Team won the 13 and under AA USSSA State Baseball Tournament. The Tigers went 6-0 in the State Tournament beating the St. Louis Bulls with a score of 11-2 in the championship game.  There were 20 teams entered into the State Tournament. The Tigers are coached by Brock Cook and Tony Floyd. Players on this team include: Dalton Cook, Dillon Smith, Elijah Floyd, Jacob Pryor, Kory Ramsey, Kobe Mead, Jon Arzt, Brady Smith, Logan Woolf, Logan Conway, and Grant Connell.
 
Justin Maxwell hit a two-run home run to help the Houston Astros survive a 9-7 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set. Jonathan Sanchez (1-3) was his own worst enemy on Monday. He committed two errors with bad pickoff throws, both of which led to runs, hit two batters, walked four, gave up six hits and four runs, three earned, over six innings to drop his third straight decision. Yuniesky Betancourt and Billy Butler each drove in two runs for the Royals, who had won five of six coming into the contest. Before the game, Kansas City placed second baseman Chris Getz on the 15-day disabled list, optioned pitcher Nate Adcock to Triple-A Omaha, and recalled pitchers Louis Coleman and Tommy Hottovy from Omaha. The Royals and Astros play again tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will be in Detroit tonight to start a three-game interleague series with the Tigers. Lance Lynn will be on the mound for the Cards and he’ll be opposed by Justin Verlander. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio at 5:30.

Funeral services for Erma Jean Sparks of Rolla, age 75,will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 6;00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Clinton Elton “Bud” Flowers, Sr. of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Betty Vickers Mohesky will be Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Steelville Ambulance District.
