The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from Dennis Schafer about non-local vendors coming to town and selling their product for a short duration and then leaving town again. City Attorney Mark Weaver basically stated that if the business has a state sales tax license and a property owner will lease them space, then they qualify for a merchant’s license from the city. The board then approved the bid from Hogan’s Painting and Sandblasting from Van Buren for $53,280 with a budget adjustment of $3,280 for the over-budgeted amount. The board also approved to pay $6,500 from the Federal Home Loan Fund and from the economic development budget for the development of the new website of www.salemmo.com in cooperation with the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Dent County. The money is to pay for the city’s portion of the web developer, Phil Schmidt and Company. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs then explained the Memorandum of Understanding concerning the new website at www.salemmo.com and the responsibilities of the county, city and the chamber. Mayor Gary Brown then reported that the city had received from MODoT the information they needed to annex the right-of –way along Highway 72 and the required actions the city would need to take. Alderman Jim McDaniels is again asking everyone to help in trying to hold down the mosquito population by getting rid of any standing water on their property. McDaniels said that he was going to meet with Gary Larson from the Dent County Fair Board to discuss the contract for the Independence Day activities. Alderman Mike Whitley asked about the isolated incidents of high zinc levels at Heartland Metal that were corrected within the allotted 10 days by ordinance, but wondered if that was too much time to allow them to correct the problem or if there should be no tolerance. Since Water and Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory was not at the meeting, the question will be postponed until the next meeting. Mayor Gary Brown said that the police department did a traffic survey on Pershing for speeding and stop sign violations and found that persons traveled anywhere from 18 to 29 miles per hour, and 33 people out of 43 made complete stops. The police department also conducted a sobriety checkpoint for two hours on Friday night at the roadside park on Highway 19 for southbound traffic only and stopped 133 vehicles and made no arrests and issued no summons. Mayor Brown said that the street department continues to get streets ready for paving and that another budget meeting will be held at 4:00 today. The board then approved Bill #3100 that allowed the mayor to execute an agreement with the County of Dent and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce for the new website after the agreement is reviewed by City Attorney Mark Weaver. The board also approved Resolution #2-2007 that gives formal authorization to make an application to the DREAM initiative program sponsored by the Department of Economic Development. City Attorney Mark Weaver then reported that three trailer court license applications and 12 liquor license applications were in order and the board approved them for the next fiscal year. One trailer court application had not yet been received. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session.

The City of Salem is now looking for food vendors, crafters, flea markets and yard sales for the July 4^th activities to be held at the Commons. There is no set-up fee. The July 4^th activities are being sponsored by the City of Salem and for more information call 729-4811.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces the annual Independence Day Parade will take place on July 4, 2007 at 5:00 pm. The parade theme is “A Star Spangled Celebration”. Military personnel will serve as the Grand Marshals. The Chamber asks everyone planning to participate in the event to enter by Wednesday, June 27th. Entry forms are available at the Chamber office, and can be filled out in the office or called in at 729-6900. The route will be from the old festival grounds to the courthouse. The Chamber will award $100 to the best commercial and non-commercial entry in the parade.

Graveside services for Lois May Hazen of Rolla, age 69, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Animal Shelter. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Martha Camden of Hopewell, VA, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Macedonia United Baptist Church in Boss. Visitation will be from noon until service time Wednesday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

A Memorial Service for Charles E. Wood of Steelville, age 65, will be held Friday at 7:00 at the Brittion-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00.

Funeral services for Shane Edward Asbery of Portland, Oregon formerly of Rolla are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
