The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the PILT payment for Dent County which is for payment in lieu of taxes for federal lands that pay no property taxes, and this year the payment was $88,478 while last year’s figure was $70,675. The Commissioners also signed the quarterly transfer from General Revenue to the assessor’s fund of $9,750. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 2480, 4080 and 5600 while brush was going to be cut on county road 6280. Purcell indicated that two men would be hauling gravel from the creek and one man would be screening gravel. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2313, 2315, 2403, 4330 and 6160. He said that brush would be cut on county roads 2620, 2630 and 2640, and possibly county road 2240 if they can get the brush cutter to start. Larson did say that materials were going to be added and grading was going to be done to Dent County Road 2120. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he was elected as the Secretary of the Transportation Advisory Committee for the MRPC last Thursday. He went on to report that MoDOT plans on focusing on maintenance this year including the shoulder work on Highway 19 from Cherryville to Salem and also on Highway 32 east that is scheduled to begin on June 24
th. He did say that there was talk of a Federal Lands Access program that would have funds to repair roads on federal lands and he will check into that further. He did report that Robert Stout, the Chief of Policy at the Department of Natural Resources, discussed at the MRPC meeting the “Our Missouri Waters” program where DNR has divided the state into different watersheds. Dent County happens to be in three different watersheds and all watersheds in the state would be overseen by the State Waters Advisory Council. Local meetings will be held in the future to discuss these watersheds and landowners affected by the watersheds need to be in attendance when they are announced. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminds businesses who sell liquor that county liquor licenses will be due by June 30
th, the same day the state licenses are due. David Murphy from St. James came by to discuss the National Blueway designation for the White River Watershed that takes in 60 counties in Arkansas and Missouri. He said that the plan will go into effect on July 7
th and it wants to reduce water consumption for agriculture by 20%, and it would create a 180-foot vegetative buffer from “surface water” in the watershed. He presented a resolution to the commissioners for them to sign stating their opposition to the Blueway designation, but the commissioners wanted to review the “Memorandum of Understanding” for the National Blueway designation before signing. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History at 601 North Hickory will present “Mother Goose’s Flora and Fauna” tonight starting at 6:30 pm. Mother Goose will be returning this year with a series of programs with fun, songs, and activities about various aspects of the natural world, including all of the wonderful plants and animals that make up our environment. There will be a few stories, a couple of songs, snacks, and maybe a short walk close to the house, depending on the weather. This program is especially designed for toddlers, preschoolers, and up to early elementary school-aged children. The cost is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for the whole family. The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Ken Tarvin was on the agenda to discuss the “No Parking” on West Franklin Street but was not in attendance. City Administrator Clayton Lucas stated that he had talked with the liability insurance and workmen’s comp rep and they told him that because the city had a small amount of losses, the liability insurance and workman’s comp insurance rates would not be increasing next year. Lucas also said that the Insituform people have been cleaning out the sewer pipes and they will begin relining the sewer pipes on Monday, June 24th. Mayor Gary Brown said that there were numerous complaints of high grass within the city limits due to the excessive rain. He also said that he was going to look into getting a grant to tear down derelict buildings and structures. Brown did report that MoDOT would begin their shoulder work on Highway 32-72 East to the junction of Highway 32 and 72 on Monday. Brown also reported that starting in July, the emergency sirens would again be tested the first Monday of every month at 11:00. City Clerk Mary Happel reported that two of the four mobile home parks have submitted their license renewal that is due by June 30th and they are the Layman Mobile Home Park and the R & C Mobile Home Park. The board approved those licenses, then adopted the trailer court inspection policy and checklist that was followed by the inspectors. City Administrator Lucas explained an option to the alderman for the city employees to choose when it came to the health insurance. Each would cost $573 a month per employee and had exactly the same coverage except one was a PPO policy where the employees would pay the discounted price for doctors visits and services with a deductible of $2,000, while the Health Savings Account option would have $52 dollars a month go into an HSA account, but the employee would pay the full amount for services until their deductible is reached of $2,000. They could then turn around and use the HSA to help pay the deductible that would accumulate after one year to $624. The board approved allowing the employee to have the choice of which policy they would like. A mandatory employee meeting was to be held to explain the options by the insurance company representative. The board then voted to go into closed session.
A cultural exhibit featuring the Current River and it’s history will be at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Streetstarting today and lasting through the 31st of July. The exhibit is called, “Current River: The Beautiful River, It’s Strong people and It’s Unique Culture.” The exhibit is sponsored by the LAD Foundation, Bank of Salem, Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Salem Area Arts Council. The exhibit will feature a number of old photographs and artifacts of the logging, mining, farming and tourism industries as well as how the people lived and worked along the river. The South Central Missouri 2013 Cattlemen’s Tour will be held July 15th through the 18th sponsored by the Dent County and Maries County Extensions. This year, the tour will go to Portageville to the Missouri University Delta Center which is an MU Ag Experiment station. From there, the tour will go the Four L Herefords in Atwood, Tennessee, then to the Triple L Ranch in Franklin, Tennessee before the tour makes a stop at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville where participants will take in a show. The 5th stop on the tour will be a two hour “do it yourself” tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville before moving on the Robert Elliott and Sons Angus Farm in Adams, Tennessee. The 7th stop on the tour will be to King Livestock in Hopkinsville, Kentucky while the final stop will be at the University of Illinois Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Simpson, Illinois. The cost of the tour is $900 per couple or $550 for a single person and that will include all transportation, lodging and noon meals, plus any other tickets or fees associated with the stop. There must be a minimum of 30 paid participants for the tour to be held. Yadier Molina went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and five Cardinals pitchers held the Chicago Cubs in check in St. Louis' 5-2 victory over its NL Central rival at Busch Stadium. A cramp forced Shelby Miller (8-4) out after five innings, but only after the right-hander held the Cubs scoreless by allowing just two hits and two walks. The Cardinals and Cubs play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.
Pinch-runner Elliot Johnson scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the ninth inning to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Progressive Field. Eric Hosmer had the only RBI for the Royals, who will play the Cleveland Indians again tonight at 6:05.

Funeral services for Louise Sutton, age 84, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Christian Church.
Funeral services for Sylvester G. Martin of Salem, age 91, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Victor Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Maxine Helen Jones of Salem, age 92 will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Jean Bass Dean of Arizona, formerly of Salem, will be Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
