The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving two burglaries.  On Saturday, June 14^th at 1:00 in the afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of a burglary, which occurred between May 25^th and June 14^th at a residence located off of Dent County Road 2130.  Reported taken were copper water lines from inside and under the home, pots, pans, cast iron skillets and a picture of a turkey drawn by James Audubon. At 3:21 the same afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff's Department received a report of a burglary, which occurred at Montauk Baptist Church located off of Highway 119.  No forced entry to the building was located and it is unknown at this time as to what property is missing. Anyone with any information regarding the burglaries, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces that the Annual Independence Day (4^th of July) Parade entitled, “Freedom Begins At Home” will be held on Friday, July 4^th beginning at 5:00 pm. The parade route will be the same as last year. Beginning at the old fairgrounds, proceeding down McArthur Ave. to Fourth St. ending at the Court House. Those clubs, businesses, groups, organizations or individuals interested in being in the 4^th of July parade need to fill out an entry form by no later than Wednesday, June 25^th and return the form to the Chamber office located at 200 South Main or fax to the Chamber at 729-6741. Each entry will be contacted with their line up location and time. Please be sure to enter a contact phone number or email for your entry. Please remember that no ATV’s will be allowed in the parade and all drivers must be licensed. For more information, please call the Salem Area Chamber at 729-6900. Publications or pamphlets passed out during the parade do not necessarily reflect the opinions or thoughts of the members of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce or the Chamber Board. Fireworks will be held at the Commons starting at dark.

Every month, more than 135,000 Missourians participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, commonly known as WIC. The program provides nutrition information and food assistance to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and children up to five years of age. Services provided by WIC include: nutrition education, counseling, screening and risk assessment, breast-feeding promotion and support, referrals to health care providers and social services agencies, as well as food prescription (specially designed food packages). Foods provided through the WIC program include cereals, milk, cheese, eggs, dried beans and peas, juice and peanut butter, which target specific essential nutrients often missing from the diets of participants, such as vitamins A, C and D, iron, calcium and protein. The South Central Community Action Agency of Dent County is offering a L.I.F.T. (Life Improvement and Family Training) Class on Thursday, June 19^th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Old City Hall Auditorium in Salem. The class will be on how to stretch your dollar, how to make homemade bread and do container gardening. The cost of the class is free and a meal will be provided. Anyone interested in participating needs to bring a social security card for each family member, or for more information, please contact, Pennie Shelton at 729-3500, EXT 13.

Join the National Weather Service, the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and Kansas Division of Emergency Management as they promote Heat and Lightning Awareness Week, June 22^nd through the 28^th. The dangerous combination of excessive heat and humidity is a persistent danger across the Ozarks region during the summer months. Extreme heat of as high as 113 degrees has been recorded in the Ozarks. Some tips to help with the heat; drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic fluids, spend more time in air-conditioned places, don’t get too much sun, limit strenuous activities and wear lightweight and light colored clothing.  In addition to the Ozark heat, an average of 62 people die each year in the United States as a result of lightning strikes. Hundreds of those who are struck suffer from long-term symptoms including memory loss, numbness and muscle spasms. Lightning is quite dangerous, and exact strike locations are nearly impossible to predict. Tips for avoiding being struck by lightning; take shelter in a safe building with a roof and full walls on all sides, vehicles with a hard roof and the windows rolled up, avoid using corded electronic devices, stay away from any sort of metal or water, and if caught outside-find a low area away from anything tall or isolated and squat down on the balls of your feet. Mike Aviles hit a one-out solo homer in the eighth inning to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set. Kyle Davies (3-0) pitched seven strong innings for the Royals, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four. Kansas City has won three games in a row. Joel Pineiro matched Davies through seven innings yielding one run on seven hits and striking out four batters for the Cardinals. Ron Villone (1-2) gave up the deciding run to suffer the loss in two-thirds of an inning. Joakim Soria piked up his 16th save. Previously in the game, DeJesus hit a two-out single to center scoring Ross Gload to tie the game in the fifth. Cesar Izturis hit a third-inning double and scored the only run for St. Louis, which had a modest two-game winning streak snapped. Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen made his first appearance since coming off the disabled list Sunday and threw the ninth inning. The Cards and Royals play again tonight at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Todd Wellemeyer will miss his next scheduled start Thursday and Anthony Reyes will pitch in his place. The 29-year-old righthander has been experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow and has already missed seven days this month because of the injury.
