An accident occurred at 5:35 Friday morning in Iron County on Highway 32 in Bixby. According to the highway patrol report, a 1988 Ford F 150 driven by 20-year-old Justin Bright of Salem, swerved to miss an oncoming vehicle and ran off the right side of the roadway where the Ford struck three trees, ejecting Bright from the vehicle. Bright suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac’d to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 1988 Ford F-150 was totaled and removed form the scene by Abney’s Towing of Viburnum.

An accident occurred at 8:15 Saturday morning in Dent County on Route K about 15 Miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1990 International school bus driven by 25-year-old James Reese of Salem was heading northbound and met a 1999 BMW driven by 43-year old John Osthus of Manchester, Missouri, who was heading southbound. As the two vehicles were passing, a canoe became unattached from the trailer of Reese’s vehicle and struck the windshield of Osthus’s vehicle. John Osthus suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The 1999 BMW sustained moderate damages and was removed form the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00 PM. During the hearing of persons, Dennis Schafer wants to discuss concerns and issues of allowing outside vendors to come into Salem, sell their products and then leave the area and the effects it has on the local economy. During bids, the City requested bids to paint the 75,000-gallon water tank in which $50,000 has been budgeted in the 2006/2007 budget for this item and bids were requested to design and develop the new web site www.salemmo.com. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs will present the agreement on the design and development of the new web site. In unfinished, MoDOT has sent the requirements for annexations and actions required of the City on annexation right-of-ways. Alderman Jim Jackson, Mike Whitley, and Bill Riley would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city along with Jim McDaniels who would like an update on the mosquito problem, and the fireworks for the 4^th of July, followed by Mayor Gary Brown with his comments. Bill #3100 will be introduced which is an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and the County of Dent for joint development of the website and Resolution # 2-2007 which is a resolution giving formal authorization to make an application in the Dream Initiative Program. City Mark Weaver will present the applications for Trailer Court and Liquor Licenses for the Board’s approval followed by the approval of bills. The Board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at the Licking City Hall. Those attending the meeting can meet with department staff to discuss a proposed wastewater treatment system that will serve the Taylor Estates Subdivision. The proposed system is a re-circulating sand filter designed to treat 15,540 gallons of wastewater per day.  Because of the surrounding geography, the facility's discharge must meet strict water quality standards, including disinfecting the wastewater with chlorine. Ronnie Atterberry submitted the application for the treatment system, which will discharge from the subdivision to a tributary of Little Piney Creek, June 30, 2006. The Department of Natural Resources, which is responsible for enforcing Missouri's water quality laws, is authorized to regulate the quality of water discharges, but has no authority to regulate the location of a discharge. U.S. Senator Kit Bond praised the decision by the U.S. Department of Interior to keep open the Mid-Continent Mapping Center in Rolla. This is great news for Rolla and the dedicated USGS workers. Most important, USGS will maintain the outstanding capabilities at the Rolla center, which is centrally located near the critical areas USGS has to supervise. The Mid-Continent Mapping Center employs over 130 skilled men and women. In 2006, the center was scheduled to be closed and be consolidated to a National Geospatial Operations Center in Denver.

Funeral services for Martha Camden of Hopewell, VA, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Macedonia United Baptist Church in Boss. Visitation will be from noon until service time Wednesday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
