The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2430, 2480 and 6410; while materials would be added and grading would be done on county road 5615 which is a Title 2 work project. Purcell said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6380. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on county roads 2200 and 4290, and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3180 and 6120. Larson went on to say work was being done on county truck #65 and work on the brakes continues on truck #110. Larson said one man would be screening rock at the shed and another man would be going to Springfield for oil for the DuraPatcher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on Thursday he attended the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting at the MRPC where they received an update on the ¾ cent sales tax proposed by MODOT on the August ballot. The tax would generate about $157,869 for Dent County and the Meramec Region would receive about 1.2 million dollars. He also attended an External Relations Committee meeting and the MRPC meeting. Skiles will be attending the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Board meeting today as well as the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency meeting in Winona tonight. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she reviewed both of the bids for election equipment and recommended going with the Henry M. Adkins & Sons, Inc. bid of $57,620. The money will come from the election equipment fund money in the General Revenue budget and it would be paid in one lump sum. The commissioners approved Curley’s recommendation by a 3-0 vote. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams informed the commission she would be dispersing $91,965.01 from the Fines and Forfeitures money to the local school districts. This money accumulates over a one-year time frame and comes from the Circuit Clerk and also from the state. The money will be moved to holding and then checks will be issued to Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3, Northwood R-4, Bunker R-3 and Iron County C-4 school districts based on a formula based on student attendance. At the last meeting, Sheriff Rick Stallings made a recommendation to re-submit meal bids and the commission, agreed, 3-0. Bids will be reopened on June 30
th at 10:00 AM. Also at the last meeting, Nick Girondo with the Missouri Department of Conservation reported that MDC and the Forest Service are working on replacing another low water crossing on Dent County Road 5610 over Sinkin Creek known as the Cooley Bridge. The Forest Service will provide for all the service and bidding, but would like some in-kind work from the county. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their June meeting on tonight at the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the May 20th meeting, will be the summary of operations and statistics reports for May. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will then update the Board on the nursing and ancillary service reports. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will then update the Board with an auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and an update on legislative issues. In old business will be the 2011 strategic planning goals update, the Community Health Needs Assessment, the 2015 budget approval and the Ozark Independent Health Alliance (OIHA). During new business will be the election of officers for the July meeting and purchases made for the hospital. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The June meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 8:39 Monday evening in Dent County on County Road 5130, about four miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 70-year old Dennis Swartz of Salem was driving a 2007 Honda Reflex 250 south when he swerved to avoid a squirrel in the roadway. The Honda then began skidding and overturned onto its side. Swartz suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene of the accident by the owner of the vehicle.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers went to Dexter to play in the Rib City Shootout this past weekend and finished with an 8-0 record. Over the course of the shootout, Salem played five teams from southeast Missouri, a team from Illinois, as well as regular season opponents Steelville and Viburnum. Salem had a very good showing at the Rib City Shootout, outscoring opponents by a total of 389-157, holding every team to fewer than 30 points, and out-rebounding every team by at least a 2:1 margin.
The Lady Basketball Tigers will be hosting its own one-day shootout this Wednesday at the High School gym. The price of admission is $2 and people will need to enter through the back door just like they did during this past basketball season. There will be four schools in addition to Salem: Bunker, Viburnum, Potosi and Chillicothe. Games will start at 9:00 in the morning with the last game starting at 3:45 in the afternoon.
Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Jon Jay posted two hits and scored three runs, while Matt Adams had a run-scoring triple among his two hits and two RBI for the red-hot Cardinals, who have won four straight and seven of their last eight games. Nick Greenwood (1-0) was credited with the victory after tossing 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball in his MLB debut in place of starter Carlos Martinez, who yielded an unearned run on two hits and four walks over four frames. The Cardinals and Mets play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.
Omar Infante went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI as the red-hot Kansas City Royals opened a key four-game series with the Detroit Tigers with an 11-8 decision at Comerica Park. The Royals racked up 17 hits and battered the struggling Justin Verlander for seven runs in six innings en route to their eighth consecutive victory, though they had to withstand a six-run ninth by the Tigers that was highlighted by J.D. Martinez's grand slam. Billy Butler added a three-run double and Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain each finished 3-for-5 with an RBI for Kansas City, which now sits just a half-game back of Detroit for first place in the AL Central. Jason Vargas (7-2) did his part on the mound as well, holding the Tigers to two runs on seven hits through seven effective innings. The Royals and Tigers play again tonight.
A Summer Volleyball Camp will be held from June 23rd through June 27th this year at the SHS Gym. Camp times will be from 8:30 in the morning until 10:00 for girls in the 3rd through 5th grade, and from 12:30 to 2:00 for girls in the 6th through 8th grade. This camp is open to any girl entering these grades from Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent Phelps R-3, or Northwood R-4. The cost of the camp is $30 per girl. Graveside services for Ina R. Carroll of Rolla, age 54, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Pilot Knob Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Carroll family for help with funeral cost. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Preston Ray Gill of Boss, age 11, will be held Wednesday at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the family of Preston Gill.
Funeral services for Mary Frances (Heavin) Henson of Newburg, age 90, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Pilot Knob Cemetery.
Funeral services for Leroy F. Nixon of Rolla, age 81, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Owensville City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Phelps Regional Hospice.
Graveside services for Betty A. Dudley of Columbia, Illinois, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Sunday, June 29th at 1:00 at the North Lawn Mausoleum in Salem. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Legion Auxiliary #99 in Salem.
