The Salem Police Department released their reports involving thefts. On Friday, June 11
th at 5:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 66-year old Bunker man for stealing $25.94 of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. The merchandise was then returned to Wal-Mart. At 8:50 p.m. that evening, an officer was dispatched to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown had taken $25 from the victim’s apartment. On Saturday, June 12
th at 5:45 p.m. an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen wallet. The victim’s report stated that while at work at Casey’s on South McArthur, a person or persons unknown had stolen her wallet and contents. The wallet was described as a leopard print. On Sunday, June 13
th at 8:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the area of 700 East Dent in reference to the theft of yard ornaments. The investigation revealed that between June 6
th and June 13
th a person or persons unknown had stolen two yard ornaments from the residence. The ornaments were described as a globe with a hummingbird on it and a flower with a butterfly on it. Further investigation revealed that the ornament of the globe and hummingbird was located in a yard in the immediate area where a person or persons unknown had placed it. The second ornament has not yet been located and the theft is still under investigation. The missing ornament is valued at $25. Anyone with information on the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department 729-4242.
Even the threat of rain could not dampen this year’s Relay for Life event as over $70,000 was raised with 17 teams participating. The goal this year was to raise $55,000. The top team this year was the Salem Memorial District Hospital team as they raised over $15,000. The event had to be moved to the Salem United Methodist Church due to the rain earlier in the day and the continual threat of rain into the early evening. A total of 299 luminaries were purchased in memory of those who beat cancer but also those who lost their battle. In attendance at the event were 75 cancer survivors.
According to Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings, four thefts occurred in Dent County over the last two weeks. On June 6th at 7:39, a report was received from Montie Foster about a burglary and break-in at his home. The house had been gone through and some jewelry was missing along with a .22 caliber handgun and about $100 in change. The incident occurred sometime between 9:45 in the morning and 6:30 that evening. On June 12th, the Lenox Rural Fire Department reported a burglary and break-in at 9:30 a.m. Stallings said that the fire department would need to do a full inventory to compile the complete list of items missing but some major items were a safe and a Stihl K-12 saw. The safe was later reported found in Edgar Springs and returned to the fire department. On June 13th at 6:55 in the evening, an XBOX 360 game system valued at $1,400 was reported stolen by Natalie Weikel. She said that the system was taken sometime between June 11th and the 13th. Stallings also reported that sometime between June 10th and the 13th, a burglary and break-in occurred at the Glenda Golden residence. Reported stolen were a .410 gauge H and R model 89, a 20-gauge Stevens model 678, a Rueger and some miscellaneous change. If anyone has any information on the break-ins, thefts and burglaries, they should contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.
Two new souvenir items are available to help celebrate Salem's 150th Anniversary. Coffee mugs and commemorative coins are now on sale at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. The coffee mugs are 11 ounces and the commemorative coins have a solid brass core and are gold-plated. The mugs and coins are $10 each and will help fund additional activities and celebrate the Sesquicentennial. The ONCRC is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Souvenirs will also be available during the Salem Heritage Festival July 3rd through July 10th.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club monthly membership meetings will be held together on Monday, June 21st from noon until 1:00 pm at My Place Restaurant. Jo Ann Emerson will be in attendance and will be speaking. The cost for lunch is $8.00 per person and you are asked to RSVP no later than Thursday, June 17th to be included in the lunch count. Chone Figgins' RBI single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as Seattle nipped St. Louis, 2-1, in the final test of a three-game interleague set from Busch Stadium. David Freese hit safely three times and Ryan Ludwick drove in the lone run for the Cardinals, who had won the first two games in the series. Jaime Garcia (6-3) suffered his first defeat since May 8, though he allowed only two runs and five hits while fanning seven and walking one over seven innings. The Cards have the day off today before hosting the Oakland A’s this weekend.
Jason Michaels drove in three runs and Roy Oswalt was solid in seven innings on the mound, as the Houston Astros defeated the Kansas City Royals, 4-2, in the second test of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. David DeJesus went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Royals, who won 15-7 in the series opener. Jason Kendall drove in the other run in defeat. Bruce Chen (3-1) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits in 5 2/3 frames to suffer his first loss of the season. The well-traveled southpaw also struck out six and walked three. The Royals and Astros play again tonight.
The Kansas City Royals have been selected to host the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig made the announcement on Wednesday, making good on the promise he made back in 2006 that Kauffman Stadium would get to host a Mid-Summer Classic in the near future if upgrades were made to the venue. Jackson County, Missouri taxpayers passed a $275 million referendum that year, and the renovations were finally completed in 2009. Kauffman will host the 83rd All-Star Game two years from now. This season, Angel Stadium in Anaheim plays host, and what is now Chase Field in Phoenix gets the nod in 2011.
The Kansas City Royals placed pitcher Luke Hochevar on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, retroactive to June 12, with a right elbow strain. To fill the roster spot, the Royals recalled pitcher Anthony Lerew from Triple-A Omaha. In addition, the club released pitcher John Parrish.
The SMDH Family Medicine will be offering sports physicals for $20 to all school aged children participating in sports activities on July 1 from 1:00 to 7:00 in Physician’s Office Building 3 on the hospital campus. They will accept a check, cash or credit card for payment as no insurance will be filed. Parental consent is needed for any child under the age of 18 either by being there in person or having a signed permission form giving permission for the exam. A dietician and physical therapist will also be available to help with questions. Appointments are encouraged by calling 729-8000, but walk-ins will be accepted with a parent or guardian, or if the child has a signed consent form.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Memorial services for Martha Craig of St. James, age 65, will be held today at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time.
Funeral services for Cloetta Gibbs Hubbs of Lake St. Louis, age 86, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 (noon) until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Edgar Cemetery.
Memorial services for Randal Edward White of Salem, age 42, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 (noon) until service time. In lieu of flowers memorial are suggested to the family.
A memorial gathering will be held for Chet Max Gilbert of Salem, age 81, Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Funeral services will also be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in New Haven. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Toedtmann-Grosse Funeral Home in New Haven. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Haven. Memorials are suggested to the redeemer Lutheran Church of Rolla, Bethlehem Lutheran Church of New Haven or the American Cancer Society for Lymphoma research.
