The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. The board approved a request from the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency to close off West Second Street between North Jackson and North Washington for the annual Back-to-School Fair on July 16^th. The board heard from Tim Wofford about the storm water problem at his home at #2 South Jackson as well as some of his neighbors. They all say that the drains are too small to carry off the water, flooding their yards and basements. City Engineer Bill Huffman will take a look at the problem to see what can be done and will make a recommendation at the next meeting. The board approved the bid from Bill Malone to mow all of 301 East 10^th Street for $300, and they approved the purchase of 20-30 foot utility poles and 20-45 foot utility poles from Arkansas Electric Cooperatives. The 30-foot poles were $165 each and the 45-foot poles are $320 each for a total of $9,700. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs talked with board about the Classic Car Show this Saturday at the courthouse square; that the tourism committee turned down a request to put a  “Visit Salem” sign on Interstate 44, and activities are planned for Independence Day. Alderman Kenneth Nash again asked about the ordinance concerning a collection agency for the delinquent electric accounts and City Attorney Nanci Wisdom said it would be on the next meeting’s agenda. Alderman McDaniels and Kenneth Nash both said that the city needs to look hard at the storm water problems and budget for that as well. Mayor Gary Brown said that the city would allot the last one-half hour that they have contracted with the MRPC to CASA to look for grants to re-open their office in Salem. Brown said that meetings would be scheduled over the next 10 days to work on the budget, and that a City of Salem Sesquicentennial meeting would be held on June 23^rd at 7:00 at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. He also told the board that the city workers are doing a lot of tree trimming, grass mowing, weed eating and pothole patching. He also said he received donations from some gracious citizens to take the city workers to breakfast or dinner for their work after the May 8^th storm. In the consent agenda, sales tax revenue in May was at $106,394.24, which is $10,858 more than last May. Brown said that the year-to-date sales tax revenue is up about 5% over last year. The board approved Bill #3167 that allowed the mayor to sign an agreement with the Dent County Fall Festival Association to lease the Commons for the Independence Day activities. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned

Former Dent County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Susan Bell, who resigned June 12, was sworn in as acting prosecuting attorney until Gov. Jay Nixon appoints a prosecutor to serve until the 2010 election. 42nd Circuit Court Judge Kelly Parker appointed and swore in Bell as the county's acting prosecutor.

An accident occurred at 5:00 Tuesday morning in Dent County on Route H about eight miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Chevrolet Tracker driven by 48 year-old David Asher of Salem traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and then caught on fire. Asher and an occupant in the vehicle, 35 year-old Michael Wimberly of Salem, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Salem Memorial Hospital by EMS. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Tracker was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Funeral services for John A. James of Vienna, age 41, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Vienna United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the James Community Cemetery in Vienna. Memorials may be made to the Vienna United Methodist Church or the James Community Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Larnce (Larry) R. Bailey of Salem, age 51, will be held today at 1:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time. Interment will be in the House of Prayer Cemetery in Salem. 

Funeral services for Wayne Junior Shaw of Rolla, age 80, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Primitive Baptist Church in Flat, Missouri. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Flat with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Primitive Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Reverend Donald A. Lunsford of Boss, age 94, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Boss Assembly of God Church.

Funeral services for Pearl Walls of St. James, age 78, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Miles Cemetery.

A Memorial Service for William J. Higginbotham of Rolla, age 72, will be held Saturday, June 20^th at 7:00 at the Central Community Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Central Community Church of God or the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
