The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday in the city hall council chambers. The board heard from Verla Floyd about paving Beezley and Dale Streets in the Brandon Heights subdivision where 14 people live versus Phillips Street where two people live. This had been discussed at a budget hearing. Later in the meeting, the board approved the request to make the change in the budget IF the item remains in the budget. The board approved renewing their health insurance with United Health Care with a zero deductible and low per visit and drug costs instead of applying for other coverage from companies, and they approved the bid from David Williams for the cutting, bailing and removal of the hay from the soccer fields for $275.00. The board then approved the bid from Insituform Technologies USA for $94,496.00 for the reconstruction of about 3,009 feet of existing eight inch sewer line on Hickory Street, 10^th Street and on line through the Bonebrake Property. This system basically creates a new plastic pipe inside the old clay pipe so no digging will be necessary. The first $69,271 will be paid out of this year’s budget with the remaining $15,775 covering some 525 feet coming out of next year’s budget. The board approved the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Board to allow an in-home real estate office at 607 West Glendale owned by Sharon Sevedge, approved Bill #3131 that allows the mayor to execute a contract between the city and Cellnet for the use of 12 telephone poles at a monthly rate of $10 per pole for communication equipment, and approved Bill #3132 that allows relatives to work in the same department as long as one doesn’t supervise the other. The mayor reported that Bill Huffman is now the supervisor of the sidewalk construction crew as well as his other duties, and that the city has received taxiway improvement plans from MoDOT for the airport at cost of $718,000 of which $113,000 is for the engineering. The city will have to pay only 5% of the cost. The board approved the issuance of 11 liquor licenses in town and the issuance of three trailer court license renewals with one license renewal on hold until the next meeting. The board voted against a policy change that would prohibit department heads from taking their city vehicles home, and postponed any decision on an Internet usage policy for the police department. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session to discus personnel and real estate.

An accident happened on Saturday around 11:30 in the morning in Dent County on Dent County Road 6670 about one mile from Montauk State Park. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Pontiac Coupe driven by 27-year old Danyelle Rollf of Godfrey, Illinois ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert, a tree, and then overturned into the river. Rollf suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted from the scene by Air-Evac to St. Johns Medical Center in St. Louis. Rollf was wearing a seat restraint ay the time of the accident. The vehicle sustained moderate damage and was taken by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened in Dent County on Sunday evening at 6:55 on Route K in Jadwin. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by 22-year old Tommie Hawkins of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Hawkins then over-corrected causing the PT Cruiser to travel back off the right side of the roadway where it struck an embankment and then a fence. Suffering moderate injuries were Hawkins and a passenger in the vehicle, 10-year old Nathan Cook of Salem. Both were taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The PT Cruiser sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4150, 4155, 6350 and 6490, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5170.  Simpson also said that a FEMA representative would be in Dent County today to inspect roads in District 1 that were damaged by flooding.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 3260, and grading would be done on various roads in the Lecoma area. Tune also said that brush would be cut in the Anutt area and the rest of the District 2 crew would be catching up on routine maintenance and putting up road signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Susan Cunningham with Spatial Data Research met with Ray Walden, Charlie Pace and Sherry Lea on Friday at TCRC to discuss the upcoming training session that the three will need to complete, and the task that will be involved with the job of Rural Addressing Coordinator. Walden, Pace and Lea will begin their training sometime in July. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting for the August 5^th Primary Election will begin June 24^th and the last day to register to vote for that election will be July 9^th. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Cardinals and Royals had the day off yesterday and they will face each other tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

The Cardinal’s medical staff received back test results on Yadier Molina who sustained an injury in Sunday afternoon's game. All test results were negative. He did sustain a mild concussion. Molina remained hospitalized Sunday night as a precautionary measure.

It had all the makings of a David vs. Goliath ending, only David didn't have enough to finish Goliath off. Tiger Woods finally beat Rocco Mediate on the 91st hole of the U.S. Open on Monday, ending an instant-classic major championship with a par at the 19th hole of a playoff. Woods made a birdie to send the scheduled 18-hole playoff into sudden-death, then needed only a routine par at the next hole after Mediate bounced a bunker shot off the cart path and against the bleachers.
