An accident occurred at 1:35 Saturday afternoon in Dent County that took the life of a young Salem boy. According to the highway patrol report, 11-year old Preston Gill of Salem was driving a 2003 Bombardier ATV too fast for the conditions on private property along Highway 19, thirteen miles from Salem, when he traveled off the roadway. The ATV then overturned on top of him. Gill was transported by Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and was pronounced dead by Dr. Caudill at 2:33 that afternoon. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The ATV sustained moderate damage but was driven from the scene.
An accident happened at 5:00 Friday evening in Crawford County on Highway HH. According to the highway patrol report, 21-year old Timothy J. Todd of Salem sustained serious injuries when the 1994 Ford Mustang he was driving rounded a curve too fast, went off the right side of the road causing Todd to overcorrect, traveled off the left side of the road, and struck multiple trees. Todd was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident and was flown by Arch Air to Mercy in Creve Coeur.
An accident occurred at 3:35 Saturday in Crawford County on Highway Y about three miles north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, 65-year old Linda Reed of Viburnum was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 south when she fell asleep, causing the vehicle to travel off the left side of the roadway and strike a tree. Reed suffered serious injuries and was flown to Mercy in St. Louis. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00. In bids, the city requested bids for two 250 KVA single-phase padmount transformers and those bids will be presented to the board. After approval of the agenda, City Attorney Camm Seay will present the agreement between the city and the Salem R-80 FFA that had been discussed at previous meetings. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on items and projects concerning the city of Salem. Mayor J.J. Tune will then give his report and again wishes to discuss having public comment at the Board of Aldermen meetings on non-agenda items. City Clerk Mary Happel will present the trailer court license renewals for board approval and then request approval for the employee’s life insurance that will go into effect on July 1st. Water/Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory will request the approval of the purchase of a C2 Compound Omni Water Meter. This meter is for the high school and the lowest quote was from HD Waterworks in the amount of $3,848. The meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem invite everyone to participate in the 2014 Independence Day Parade, “United We Stand-Proudly We Serve” on Friday, July 4th at 6:00 pm. The parade route will run from the old fairgrounds (corner of South Grand & Franklin) to the Dent County Courthouse. Be sure and fill out an entry form no later than Thursday, June 26th. Forms can be dropped off the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main or fax them to (573) 729-6741. Please remember lawn mower’s go-carts and ATV’s are not allowed. There will be FREE ultrasounds on Monday, June 16th through Thursday, June 19th for pregnant women at least 6 weeks and in their first trimester at Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center. The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will host artist, musician and historian Dan Woodward in a presentation of his visual art depicting life in Missouri during the Civil War TONIGHTat 7:00 p.m. Mr. Woodward’s art is currently on display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center (ONCRC) in Salem, and he will present a slide show and historical commentary of the pieces at the Bonebrake Center. His commentaries are both artistic and historical, helping the viewers of his works understand the context of the pieces, and should appeal to both artists and amateur historians. This program is appropriate for adults and older children, and light refreshments will be available. Registration is requested to plan for space but not required, and a donation of $2 per person is suggested, but no one will be turned away. Brady Hagler, the son of John and Jennifer Hagler of Salem, competed in the Missouri High School Rodeo Finals Thursday through Saturday in Columbia at the Boone County Fairgrounds. Brady and his partner, Patrick Houchins of Frankford, Missouri, took 6th place on Thursday in the Team Roping Competition, captured 3rd place on Friday, and came in 1st on Saturday and won the average. At the end of the Missouri High School Rodeo Finals, the Hagler/Houchins team finished in 3rd place in Team Roping and they now qualify for National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming from July 13th through the 19th. Jaime Garcia tossed seven solid innings, Matt Adams hit his third homer in as many games and the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Washington Nationals, 5-2, to complete a three-game sweep. Garcia (3-0) allowed one run on five hits while striking out six and walking two for the Cardinals, who have won six of seven. Matt Holliday hit a solo homer and ended with two RBI. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the New York Mets tonight at Busch Stadium. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:35.
The St. Louis Cardinals have activated first baseman Matt Adams off the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Nick Greenwood from Triple-A Memphis. In corresponding moves, St. Louis sent down outfielders Randal Grichuk and Oscar Taveras.
Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez both hit home runs and the Kansas City Royals extended their best winning streak of the season with a 6-3 decision over the Chicago White Sox, completing a dominant three-game road sweep. The Royals have won seven in a row. The Royals will start a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers tonight.
The Kansas City Chiefs released Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers on Friday. Flowers, 28, dealt with a knee injury but was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time this past season after posting 68 tackles, one sack and one interception in 13 games. Flowers was drafted by the Chiefs with the 35th pick in 2008 and played in at least 13 games in each of his six seasons for the team, collecting 374 tackles and 17 interceptions, including 3 returned for TDs.
For the second time in three years, the Los Angeles Kings are Stanley Cup champions. Alec Martinez scored with 5:17 left in the second overtime to lift the Kings to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Friday at Staples Center. Justin Williams was named the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy.
The San Antonio Spurs secured their fifth NBA title in franchise history Sunday with a third straight double-digit victory against the team that dashed their dreams a season ago. Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard donated 22 points and 10 rebounds, Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills combined for 36 points off the bench and the Spurs ended Miami's hopes of a three-peat with a 104-87 victory over the Heat in Game 5 of the NBA Finals at AT&T Center.
A Summer Volleyball Camp will be held from June 23rd through June 27th this year at the SHS Gym. Camp times will be from 8:30 in the morning until 10:00 for girls in the 3rd through 5th grade, and from 12:30 to 2:00 for girls in the 6th through 8th grade. This camp is open to any girl entering these grades from Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent Phelps R-3, or Northwood R-4. The cost of the camp is $30 per girl. Funeral services for Virginia Albetta Payne of Steelville, age 89, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Steelville First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Graveside services for Ina R. Carroll of Rolla, age 54, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Pilot Knob Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Carroll family for help with funeral cost. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Preston Ray Gill of Boss, age 11, will be held Wednesday at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the family of Preston Gill.
Graveside services for Betty A. Dudley of Columbia, Illinois, formerly of Salem, age 80, will be held Sunday, June 29th at 1:00 at the North Lawn Mausoleum in Salem. Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the American Legion Auxiliary #99 in Salem.
