An accident occurred at 1:00 Tuesday afternoon in Phelps County on Interstate 44 at Route V. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Cadillac driven by 20-year old Danielle Elmer of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route V. Elmer was entering traffic from the Route V interchange when she lost control of the Cadillac on wet pavement and struck a guardrail. Elmer suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Cadillac sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by C&C Towing.
A workshop, called by Mayor Gary Brown, will be held today starting at 10:00 this morning in the City Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington to discuss Capital Improvements for 2010/2011. The workshop is open to the public.
An accident happened last Friday around 3:00 in the afternoon at the intersection of Highway 19 and Franklin Street. According to the Salem Police report a 1992 Toyota Pick-Up driven by Tanner Davereaux of Salem was stopped at the stop sign on East Franklin Street and preceded to cross Highway 19. Davereaux then made contact with a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Dannie Richardson of Salem that was traveling southbound on Highway 19. No injuries were reported and the Toyota received moderate damage and the Chevrolet received extensive damage.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that troopers will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Crawford County during the month of June. The checkpoint will be concentrated in an area and on a particular highway where a larger number of alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred last year. The officers conducting the checkpoint will be utilizing the mobile DWI unit referred to as the B.A.T. van (Breath Alcohol Testing van), which the Patrol received from the Division of Highway Safety. The van is equipped with a breath-testing instrument, communication equipment, and other equipment and supplies related to DWI enforcement. Captain Kenley would like to urge all motorist passing through a checkpoint to use extreme caution by slowing down, keeping their eyes on the road and vehicles ahead for any sudden stopping, and to follow the directions of the officers. Captain Kenley stated that officers at the checkpoint will be checking operator's licenses and looking particularly for motorists driving while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Captain Kenley went onto say, “Each year many motorists are arrested for driving while intoxicated as a result of these checkpoint operations. If just one life is saved or a needless traffic crash is prevented, then the time and effort our troopers put into these enforcement operations is well worth every minute.”
Two new souvenir items are available to help celebrate Salem's 150th Anniversary. Coffee mugs and commemorative coins are now on sale at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. The coffee mugs are 11 ounces and the commemorative coins have a solid brass core and are gold-plated. The mugs and coins are $10 each and will help fund additional activities and celebrate the Sesquicentennial. The ONCRC is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Souvenirs will also be available during the Salem Heritage Festival July 3rd through July 10th.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club monthly membership meetings will be held together on Monday, June 21st from noon until 1:00 pm at My Place Restaurant. Jo Ann Emerson will be in attendance and will be speaking. The cost for lunch is $8.00 per person and you are asked to RSVP no later than Thursday, June 17th to be included in the lunch count. The SMDH Family Medicine will be offering sports physicals for $20 to all school aged children participating in sports activities on July 1 from 1:00 to 7:00 in Physician’s Office Building 3 on the hospital campus. They will accept a check, cash or credit card for payment as no insurance will be filed. Parental consent is needed for any child under the age of 18 either by being there in person or having a signed permission form giving permission for the exam. A dietician and physical therapist will also be available to help with questions. Appointments are encouraged by calling 729-8000, but walk-ins will be accepted with a parent or guardian, or if the child has a signed consent form.
Jeff Suppan didn't last long enough to win in his return to the Cardinals, but the right-hander navigated four frames, and Colby Rasmus did the rest, as St. Louis took its second straight from Seattle, 4-2. Suppan, who was released by Milwaukee on June 7th, gave up one run on four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. He threw 73 pitches, but was replaced because of a long layoff from the mound. Rasmus hit a two-run shot and Albert Pujols, one game after getting plunked in the ear-hole of the helmet by a Jose Lopez throw home in Monday's game, hit a solo home run for the Cardinals, who have won two in a row. Blake Hawksworth (1-3) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless frames for the victory, and Ryan Franklin nailed down his 12th save. The Cardinals go for the three-game series sweep tonight with Jaime Garcia on the mound versus Seattle's Jason Vargas. You can hear the game onKSMO Radio starting at 6:55.
Mike Aviles went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and three runs scored, as the Kansas City Royals used a seven-run fifth inning to take down the Houston Astros, 15-7, in the opener of a three- game interleague series at Kauffman Stadium. Yuniesky Betancourt hit a three-run double and scored a run for the Royals, who have won two in a row and four of five overall. Scott Podsednik went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, Billy Butler added three hits and three runs scored with an RBI and Alberto Callaspo ended 3- for-5 with two runs batted in and two runs scored for Kansas City, which tied a season-high with 20 hits. Starter Kyle Davies got rocked in three-plus innings, allowing six runs on six hits. Kanekoa Texeira (1-1) tossed two scoreless frames of relief to record his first win in the majors. The two teams play again tonight.
The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Funeral services for Mabel Anna Hebberger of St. James, age 97, will be held today at 11:00 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time.
