Smith’s vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and returned to the westbound lane before coming to a stop in Country Mart’s parking lot.  The Ford Escape and trailer sustained moderate damage, the Ford Explorer sustained extensive damage, and the canoes sustained minor damage. Smith and a passenger in his vehicle both received minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment.

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced that Missouri’s No Call Law has been expanded to cover personal cell phones in addition to residential landlines.  Missourians may now register their cell phone numbers on his website at ago.mo.gov or by phone at 1-866-buzzoff (1-866-289-9633). Koster stated that the expanded law covers only cell phones primarily used for personal and family calls. Cell phones that are used primarily for business are not covered. The no call registry is updated quarterly. Those who add their mobile numbers to the list by July 31st will be covered starting October 1st.  Anyone signing up after July 31st but before November 1st will be covered January 1, 2013. More than 1.8 million Missouri households are currently on the no call registry for residential phones.

The number of roadway fatalities in the Meramec Region have been on the rise in 2012, and the Meramec Region Coalition for Roadway Safety Subcommittee has been actively trying to reduce this number by promoting roadway safety. Law enforcement, fire departments, EMS personnel, educators, healthcare professionals and the general public are invited to participate in the coalition’s next meeting which will be at 2:00 on June 19th at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission. MRPC is located at 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. While the number of roadway fatalities in the state decreased for 2011 in comparison to 2010, that number increased within the Meramec Region. The year-to-date fatality totals as of June 9th include 23 fatalities in the Meramec Region. This number is a 44 percent increase from 16 fatalities in the region within the same time span in 2011. The coalition plans to be actively involved in promoting the Arrive Alive message throughout the year by encouraging roadway safety during community events and school presentations by encouraging the use of seat belts, booster seats and child safety seats; while discouraging drinking and driving, the use of cell phones while driving and any other types of distracted driving. The subcommittee formed in January 2012 to represent the Meramec Region counties of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington in order to localize the efforts of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District, which includes 18 counties. For more information on the meeting, contact Bonnie Prigge at MRPC at 573-265-2993.
