An accident happened at 12:05 this morning in Texas County about three miles south of Licking on Route P. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 GMC driven eastbound by 32-year old James Walker of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Suffering moderate injuries in the accident were five-year old Cassie Walker of Salem and six-year old Ronald Walker of Salem. They were taken by the Salem Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The driver, James Walker, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. Walker drove from the scene of the accident to his home before he reported the accident. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

All 4-H/FFA members with market animal projects that will be showing and selling at the Fair this year are encouraged to attend a Fair Pre-Show on Saturday, June 18^th at the Commons livestock barn beginning at 9:00 am.  First-time exhibitors must attend or pay an additional 1% commission fee. Steers should be brought to the pre-show to acquaint them with the arena and for 4-H’ers to practice leading them with the other steers. Instruction will be given on what the judges will be looking for and how best to show your animal. There will also be demonstrations of how to show hogs and lambs. Doolittle Mayor Paul Smith was re-elected president of the Meramec Regional Building (MRB) Corporation at its meeting held June 9^th at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC). Also re-elected for the 2011-12 fiscal year were: Vice Chairman Ron Jost, Gasconade County presiding commissioner, and Secretary/Treasurer Darrell Skiles, Dent County presiding commissioner. The slate of officers was recommended by MRPC’s External Relations/Membership Committee, and there were no other nominations from the floor. The MRB board also approved its FY 2011-12 budget with anticipated revenues of $283,356 and expenses of $280,595. The MRB Corporation is a non-profit organization that owns the assets – building, computers, cars, etc. – used by Meramec Regional Planning Commission. The MRB board is made up of officials of cities and counties in the Meramec Region. The MRB Corporation board will meet immediately following the August 11^th MRPC meeting, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at its office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. All meetings are open to the public.

Take Dad to the river Fathers Day Weekend, and participate in the 5th Annual Upper Current River Clean Up!  On Saturday, June 18th registration starts at the Cedargrove, Akers, or Pulltite River access points between 8:00am and 9:00am. Pick up your mesh trash bags at these points.  A Bar-B-Q supper will be served to all registered participants at Round Spring picnic area at 6:30pm.  Groups are responsible for their own river transportation.  Canoes are available for rent at local liveries.  Groupsite #4 at Round Spring is reserved for participants use, but space is limited so visit www.recreation.gov to reserve your spot.  Rain out date will be June 25th.  For questions or more information, contact Jack or Mary Ficker at 729-7065.

The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Maramec Spring Fish Hatchery is protecting its trout with more trout. The hatchery, which raises rainbow trout, is trying a new way of preventing parasitic infestation using brook trout. Rainbow trout, along with several other west-coast fish species, are susceptible to a parasitic copepod. The tiny, shrimplike parasites, which are about the size of a pencil eraser, attach to fish gills, where they leave eggs and complete their life cycle. While the copepods are not a problem in the wild, they can become prolific in hatcheries that raise fish in high-density conditions. The copepods can attach in such high numbers that they weaken the fish, making them more prone to disease, and even causing the fish to suffocate. A study at a California hatchery concluded that placing brook trout upstream from rainbow trout somehow filters copepod larvae from the water supply, reducing infestation. To test the theory on Missouri trout, the MDC is raising a small number of brook trout at Maramec Spring Fish Hatchery. In June the trout will be put in one pool above a pool of copepod-free rainbow trout from another hatchery. If successful, brook trout could be an effective biological control method for managing parasitic copepods in fish hatcheries. A comparable biological control method is the use of ladybugs to reduce aphid infestation in gardens. Although the copepods themselves do not affect a fish’s food quality, protecting hatchery-raised rainbow trout from parasites is an effort to ensure the quality of Missouri’s trout fishing. Rainbow trout is the species most commonly stocked by MDC to provide trout fishing opportunities in designated Missouri waters. A limited number of brown trout, produced in MDC hatcheries, are also stocked in selected waters each year.

Pinch-hitter Laynce Nix drew a go-ahead bases-loaded walk as part of a six-run seventh inning, as the Nationals came back to shock the Cardinals, 8-6, in the opener of a three-game set. Trailing 6-2, the Nats put up six in the seventh, sending 12 men to the plate to go ahead off reliever Miguel Batista (3-2). Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer and Lance Berkman added a solo shot and drove in a pair for the Cardinals. Jaime Garcia worked six solid innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with one walk. The left-hander struck out seven. The Cards and Nationals play tonight starting at 5:30 on KSMO.

Alcides Escobar finished 3-for-5 with two RBI as Kansas City topped Oakland, 7-4, in the opener of a three-game series. Billy Butler also drove in two runs for the Royals, who have won four of their last five. Danny Duffy (1-2) worked six innings for his first major-league win, yielding two runs on four hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Joakim Soria turned in a scoreless ninth to notch his 10th save. Mike Moustakas and  Jeff Francoeur both scored two runs. The Royals and A's play again tonight.

Missouri Southern State University and the University of Missouri, in conjunction with the Joplin tornado relief campaign, will participate in the One State, One Spirit Classic Presented by Leggett & Platt. The basketball exhibition game received NCAA approval and will be played on Sunday, October 30^th at Missouri Southern' s Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin. Proceeds from this exhibition game will be donated by Missouri Southern to support the rebuilding efforts in Joplin in the wake of the devastating May 22 tornado.

Jack Clark Day at the ballpark has been rescheduled for Sunday, June 26^th. Registration is FREE for boys are 8–15. Boys age 8-12 will be able to participate in a clinic from 2:00 to 3:30 pm and boys age 13-15 the clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Forms to participate are available at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem and also at both locations of the Bank of Salem. Be sure and sign up for Jack Clark Day at the ballpark and get some baseball tips from a former Cardinal legend. That’s Jack Clark Day at the ballpark rescheduled Sunday, June 26^th.
